the writers and Alex probably didn't have the Vietnam war in mind when they were writing tales of two stans but reading your post about it and watching Hana's video overanalyzing the episode mentioning the draft, Ford legit would have been cooked if he didn't get into a college asap and Stan being the sneaky guy he is, immediately went into evading from getting drafted and moving countries while also surviving on the streets and I still like the headcanon that Shermie being the older sibling makes scene and was away for war and the baby Caryn their mom was holding was actually Shermie's kid

No I totally agree! And I also like the idea that Shermie was the older brother who went to war and that the baby is his kid (even though Alex Hirsch basically said that wasn’t true).

Also, Stan kept changing his name and I know it was to “avoid the debt collectors and keep restarting his businesses” but who’s to say he wasn’t draft dodging too 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also, Hana’s videos are basically GF canon in my mind and I’ve seen them all like 6 likes (I’m embarrassed but I am free)

Listen, Teen Ford literally helped rebuild a whole wooden boat that coulda been ocean safe. I think people are sleeping on that Teen Ford was probably strong and coulda done some damage in a fight if properly motivated. He also did boxing with Stan so he knew how to fight.

This is your reminder that if the Stan Twins were graduating high school in the late 60s, the draft would have been a very real fear and they would have eventually gotten drafted which is a very realistic reason why college meant so much to Ford… also, I’m convinced Stan is a draft dodger which might explain why he went to some other countries for a while.

Maybe this is a hot take (probably not), but I genuinely believe that it was the science fair incident and Stan getting kicked out that primarily gave Ford the ego (and insecurity) it took to make a deal with Bill and build the portal in the first place.

When the Stan Twins are still in high school, Ford always comes off to me, although extraordinarily smart, as an average awkward teenage boy. He clearly enjoys building the Stan-O-War with Stan probably also dreamed at one point of sailing around the world (even if he never believed they would).

I don’t even think it was the prospect of West Coast Tech that gave him an ego because what gifted kid wouldn’t get their hopes up that they could make a better life for themselves and do something big and world changing. That’s like classic Gifted Kid Syndrome™️ (ask me how I know 🙄).

I really think it was the validation of his feelings that he had been wronged by Stan when Stan gets kicked out that started Ford on his ego trip eventually because it went from - I’m mad at my brother for breaking my project and costing me an opportunity - to - You’re right, I have been wronged out of something I rightfully deserved. And at an emotional vulnerable time of the late teenage years (and the implications of the looming Vietnam War draft - we’ll talk about this later), it easily could have been the right conditions to step him on an ego trip. He absolutely had every right be to angry at Stan, but he didn’t have the right to ego trip so hard he almost ended the world.

In my experience with people with narcissistic tendencies, they’ve always had narcissistic tendencies their whole lives (again just my observed experience), but I just don’t see young Ford as someone born a narcissist. I think his ego was fueled and created later in life by his own feelings of being slighted and by the choice of his parents (mostly his father) to validate that anger and resentment toward his brother.

I will never, and I repeat, NEVER get over how Gravity Falls coded Lord Huron music is.

Don’t believe me: Listen to the Vide Noir Album and tell me that’s not Ford’s whole life.

Logically, I know they don’t write their songs about Gravity Falls, but the more insane part of my brain likes to pretend they do 😌😇

One detail from Gravity Falls I’ve always really appreciated are the details in Stan and Ford’s character models all throughout the series.

It’s super normal for board artists to draw children with only 4 fingers on each hand because it’s easier to draw, especially on the smaller character models of children (like in the case of Dipper and Mabel), but I LOVE that they let Stan keep a full 5 fingers on each hand even as a kid to show the dichotomy between him and Ford.

Obviously, it would be weird if Stan just magically grew a finger by the time he hit adulthood and Ford has to be drawn with 6 fingers… kinda the whole point, but I just love the attention to detail. They didn’t cut corners for ease, and they made sure the characters had all the details that were important to them.

A Gravity Falls joke that genuinely makes me laugh every time and is criminally underrated to the point I never hear anyone talk about it is &NDRA.

I know Mabel literally says it in the show, but her name is &NDRA (Ampersand-ra)… because her artist name starts with an ampersand (&)… and it’s like the name Sandra…

I know jokes aren’t funny when they’re explained but no one talks about this! And it makes me laugh every time.

(For any Gravity Falls fan who watch the show in a different language… does this joke translate? Do you have ampersands… or the name Sandra??)
