5-28-26 Notes on Trees

For a week going the acrid odor of Ailanthus flowers has clung on the humid night air, especially on still nights. It is a scent I grew up with and did not expect to find in zone 6. More pleasantly and beautifully, Magnolia grandiflora trees have begun to bloom; their musky sweetness does not reach me as the nearest specimens are two blocks away. Memory will suffice. Catalpas are still impressive but dropping blossoms everywhere. The white, intricately yellow and purple marked flowers are worthy of notice...absolutely artistic (as are the long, stiff, hanging "beans"). Spring is warming into summer and nature's show will evolve till at last the leaves fall. I will enjoy the season of flowers and fruits fully...it fades quickly.

5-20-26 Damp, Cool Days

My skin is getting a break from the sun. Sunday began a spell of wet, gray weather that seems set to last a while longer. I've stayed mostly indoors and slept more than usual until yesterday...I had to return to work. Friday and Monday I burned the last two vacation days from last year; better to be home than not use the time!

Sown on April 18th, 2023, the first of these Escobaria missouriensis to flower did so about three years and a week later. Probably about time to separate the bigger ones too.

5-5-26 Rainy Day

I left my job this morning under steady rain and reverberations of thunder accented by impressive lightning strikes. The drama has ceased but rain has persisted all day. I sensibly slept. Before long I'll be headed westbound for work, another turn of the cycle. I gave my chest a couple spritzes of cologne just to be needlessly "fancy". Whenever a whif greets my nose later on I'll be elevated beyond the dreary reality of work. Should another soul note my scent (positively) I'll glow second or two. Dreaming of more is impractical.
