Mended Bridges

Soon-to-be Archon, Dorian Pavus, receives an unexpected visitor in the aftermath of Elgar'nan's defeat.

Soldiers and civilians alike cleared the rubble from the streets of Tevinter.  When Solas bound himself to the Fade to preserve their world, the backwash from the spell ricocheted throughout Tevinter.  The blight closest to the spell seared away, revealing consumed bodies and buildings beneath their boils.  The rest needed to be burned in man-made pits, far from city limits. Carting away what remained didn’t stop the stench of decay from permeating everything in Minrathous and beyond.  As the new Archon, soon-to-be-crowned, stood on his balcony that overlooked the city, he looked to the grey sky and wished for rain. 

Behind him, his husband and child wrestled on the carpet. The shrill cries of his son’s laughter made his ears ring and his heart soar after so much tragedy. He turned on his heel to watch them, with one hand clutched to the balcony rail.  The warm glow of the chandelier’s candles turned his husband’s battered skin to a rich caramel.  His vallaslin sprawled from his amber eyes, twisting and turning across his forehead. His chestnut hair, longer than it had been in years, sported streaks of silver among its braids and beads.  Although his shoulders sagged with exhaustion, he smiled as his fingers scoured the younger elf’s ribcage and earned him another round of ferocious laughter. 

Their son sprawled beneath his father on the blue and gold carpet. At eight years old, he was tall and awkward enough to cover most of the decorative triangles and diamonds.  His cheeks and the tips of his pointed ears flushed as he fought for air.  His curly locks fell into his green eyes as he grasped at the wrist of his father’s prosthetic to wrench himself free.  It’s not a moment longer before the former Inquisitor, a man who had fought would-be Gods, led armies, and held the power of the heavens in the palm of his hand, let up just enough so their son could tackle him to the ground.  He made a show of it, too. He whined and hollered about how much stronger their little warrior had become while he was in the South, fighting the Blight. He carried on about the type of prince their son would be, the kind that could unite divided worlds with so much courage and spirit. 

Dorian knew that old age made his husband sentimental, but out on the balcony, where the first drops of rain hit his brow and dripped off the edge of his mustache, he couldn’t help imagining the same bright future his partner dreamed of.  Had he done it? Would he finally make his homeland a place to be proud of? A place that might help the rest of the world, instead of hindering it? 

A knock at the door roused his attention. Their steward poked his head through the door to announce the arrival of Lady Aquinea Thalrassian.  

Well, Dorian thought, baby steps. 

The door swung open on a gust of wind. It flittered through the room and onto the balcony.  The remains of magic reverberated through the air and made the hair on Dorian’s arms stand on end. While he had always excelled at pyromancy, his mother rarely thought twice before conjuring a storm to her fingertips. Even as a child, he thought she would be in her element in the middle of a tempest.   

Her demeanor rivaled the chill of the rain as it crept down his collar.  She stopped in the middle of the room with a thin-lipped frown.  In her sixties, she kept up appearances with expensive dresses and makeup that made her look like a queen rather than an altus mage.  Dorian assumed that part of her seething rage had to do with his plan to dispose of Tevinter’s standing social classes.  Or, at the very least, he planned to give everyone an equal chance at creating a better life for themselves.  

Aquina first locked eyes with her son, and then panned her gaze to the elves on the floor.  Her silver eyes narrowed, and her brow arched. 

 Dorian’s heart skipped at the sight, and he abandoned his vigil on the balcony to re-enter the warmth of the sitting room.  “What’s wrong? Surely you’re familiar with the concept of a parent playing with their child?”  Of course, their closest memories were from their summer vacations together, when their servants would take him boating while she stayed behind to drink. 

Aquinea snorted in discontent.  

“Hello, Grandmother.” Her grandson said from where he sat on his father’s chest. 

“Hello.”  She at least looks at him like he’s a person. “Lavellan. Should he not be studying at this hour?” 

“With all due respect, Lady Thalrassian, I, like the rest of the world, have had a very long few months.  I hope you’ll excuse my unsightly behavior, but I think we deserve some time to act like a family before we start acting like-” 

Dorian coughed. 

His husband fell silent.  Then, he grasped his son under the arms and heaved him back to his feet. “How about you and I break into your Dadae’s stash of chocolate oranges?” 

“Really?”

“Uh-huh. He’s busy, he can’t stop us.”  

Fleet of foot, they’re out the door and down the hall in seconds.

The only sound is the plunk of rain against the windows.  Dorian hated that looking at his mother felt like looking at himself. They shared the same eyes, the same venomous smile, the same quaint beauty mark.  The same insufferable wrinkles around the eyes.  “Did you need something, or did you only come to criticise how we’re raising our son?” 

“No.” She smoothed out a crease in her dress. “I came to check on you.  You’ll officially become Archon in a fortnight.  I wanted to make sure you didn’t lose your head.”  She waved her hand in the air.  The balcony door locked with an audible click. 

Dorian crossed his arms. “Don’t think I can handle it? That’s ironic, I seem to remember that ‘only the best Magister will become Archon.’  Is that not why the two of you decided to procreate? It’s alright, you can gloat. I imagine Father is turning over in his grave, seeing that I, the pariah and upstart, have claimed the throne.”  

“Are you finished?” 

“Have you written to your friends? You must be popular at parties! The Mother of Archon Pavus.  Or is that you’re unpopular? Some of your friends must curse my name.  Why would they want an Archon who sympathizes with the elves? Or who considers the Southern Divine a close friend?” 

“Those friends were killed by Elgar’nan.” 

“Good.” 

“I don’t miss them.”

Dorian paused. One arm fell, and then the other. Suddenly, he felt like the little boy who used to be pulled out of parties by his ear.  “I know I didn’t reach this position in the way you intended, but Thedas was on the cusp of change.  It would have happened, with or without me. I’m thankful that I got my head out of my ass and chased after Alexius all those years ago.  It showed me what needed to be fixed here, it taught me my worth, and it gave me a loving family, one that endures, even after the rest of this fucking world has fallen apart.  I know that becoming Archon will be a heavy burden to bear, but I’m ready to do my part to put Thedas back together again. Hopefully, when it’s all said and done, I’ll leave things in better shape than I found them.” 

Aquinea nodded her head.  In one second, she looked her age, tired and worn.  In the next, she looked like a warrior, armed to the teeth by her determination and pride.  She crossed the space between them.  Her hand fell to Dorian’s shoulder, and she squeezed tight.  “I’m a product of that broken world you speak of, Dorian.  I’m old, and stubborn, and most people my age aren’t quick to change their ways.  Still, even I can see that things are changing, with or without me.  I think I should follow your example, this time, and get on board before I get left behind.” 

Dorian took a deep breath.  This was the closest thing his mother had ever come to offering an apology.  While he was an expert at burning bridges, he knew very little about how to mend them.  Maker preserve him, perhaps he was too old to hold onto grudges, and if she were willing to try, then so would he. 

Dorian took his mother’s hand in his and held it tight.  “Would you like to stay for dinner?”
