She shrugged as she stared at him. “I don’t know. Do some tricks or something. That sounds exciting.”
“I’m not a hippogriff.”
“Not unless you know any other strapping, young Ravenclaw who wants it.”
Esme rand her fingers through her bangs that had been left out of her bun, as if trying to wake herself up– or prepare for the worst. “Grayson, mi’o--” she started, keeping her forehead in her hand but looking over at the taller of the pair “–If i asked you to kill me so I don’t have to go to Divination next, would you?” She didn’t hate the class, not really, but she really wasn’t in the mindset to listen to some fortune-telling mumbo jumbo right now– even if she was vaguely aware of how intrigued the other had been in the subject.Â
“I’m not that much younger than you,” he said, though his smile gave away how little it bothered him. “And I was more worried about an old Gryffindor with pudding for hair not wanting me to sit there.”
Even while he spoke, Grayson pulled out the chair and sat down, pushing a few books aside so he can lean his elbows on the table. By accident he leant on his scarf, and had to move it to the side so he didn’t strangle himself by accident. When she mentioned Divination, he turned in his seat and gave her an offended look. “Are you kidding? You need to appreciate that class.”
Illaria flopped down into a seat almost fancily and sighed loftily, looking over at the person next to her as she pouted her lips. “I’m bored.”
“And I’m supposed to help with that how?”
“I– oh.”Â
Well gee– this made it awkward.
With a much smaller, less angry, and kind of embarassed tone, she replied “Well, i mean it’d be a first, yo creo, but I don’t mind.”
Great, now she felt like the asshole. But she wasn’t wrong when she said this was a first– because, well, it kinda was? Normally whenever he was around comebacks and sometimes objects tended to fly between the two– it’s not often that they actually sat down and just, like, hung out. Not to mention the book thing kind of had her on guard for the worst. But she doesn’t see the harm in having him over, as long as he wasn’t going to mess with her like normal. Or, not right now anyway. Give her a half n hour and she’d be fully here to go at it.
“Sorry–” Esme felt it was needed to be said, since she did snap at him. “– for the, uh, snapping.”
Grayson had meant the question as rhetorical considering he had actually woken her up for a reason, wanting to borrow one of her books, but now that she was apologizing and no longer angry with him it seemed a little too late to bring that fact up. Oops. Still, there was nothing wrong with a small lie of omission as long as he went along with it, he was sure. “S’okay,” he said as he stood up again and straightened his back, placing the book back on the table. He tapped the chair beside her with one foot, then smiled. “This seat taken?”

Blush yet again rising to her cheeks at his confirmation of how strange her little ritual is. “U-Um, I d-don’t know,” she shrugged. “I-I c-came up with it m-myself. And I know i-it seems unnecessary to you, b-but to me, it’s the r-right thing t-to do. T-To honor them…”Â
There was a slight movement on the surface of the water that caught his attention a few feet away, but when he watched the lake for anything else he realized it had just been the reflection of a cloud shifting in the sky. That momentary puzzle was easy to solve, but had drawn his attention away from her long enough that he completely missed the second half of what she said. “Huh?”
Brows furrowed, Finley just stared at him for a moment longer. “Corner, sometimes I wonder how you get by with such a… special attention to details.” Hands on her hips, she glanced around at the carnival surrounding them, wondering again just how he could have missed it. “I don’t know, we do go to a magical school, I wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled out the talking jack-o-lanters on a normal spring day just for the heck of it. I wouldn’t mind, they’re kinda fun to listen to.”
Instead of being offended, Grayson just laughed at her comment about him, and glanced around again as well. “I did notice the Halloween decorations, I’m not that bad. It was just... the costumes.” He kept his arms crossed over his chest, but shifted his posture, moving his shoulders back so now the position was more confident than defensive. “They have talking jack-o-lanterns out?” His glances turned from aimless to having a purpose, and he let out another laugh as he tried to spot one. “You ever make one of those as a kid?”
Lily glanced up with a frown as she tried to determine if he was messing with her or not. “The one that we just lost terribly?”Â
“Like, a Quidditch match?” He raised his eyebrows and directed his focus back to her from where it had wandered to a piece of dust beside her shoulder.
“If you´re here to talk about the match, just turn around.”
“What match?”

Nora sighed, holding back more tears of embarrassment…or grief. They’re one and the same now. “S-Sort of. I-I cremate the plants, p-put the ashes in the box, a-and then spread them o-over the Black Lake. S-Something that h-has lived it’s entire life i-in a greenhouse sh-should know what it’s like to s-swim or f-fly…”
Grayson nodded slowly, doing his best to understand the tradition but not getting very far. Spreading ashes to show a plant how flying feels just seemed unnecessary to him considering it was already dead. “That seems unnecessary,” he said without meaning to, but he didn’t bother trying to take it back. “Is that a muggle thing to do?”
Oh.
Oh of course he wasn’t paying attention. Asshole.
Esme, giving him a shocked and offended expression, shook her head as if she should’ve seen it coming. It was Corner– either he had a mad case of ADHD or just didn’t care enough to listen. She hopes it the former, but in reality it’s probably the latter.
“A’dios mio– pay attention, would you?” She started, almost snapped really, still irritated from the wake up call. Sure, it didn’t leave any bumps or bruising, but it still hurt! And for the first time that day, she had been able to get some alone time, some sleeping time– and not have it be ruined by loud and obnoxious third years “throwing shade” and  “being savage” over the stupidest things. Esme knows they’ll grow soon, but honestly soon just wasn’t soon enough right now.
“Look, did you want something? Cause im kinda getting some needed sleep right now.”
Grayson closed the book slowly so that he wouldn’t be drawn back into reading it and lose concentration again, determinedly fixing his eyes at a spot just beside her head so that he could give the appearance of looking at her without actually having to focus. It sounded like she was angry with him for more than just the wake up call, although he couldn’t think of what. He had been paying attention, he had just lapsed in concentration for a couple seconds, it couldn’t be that hard to just repeat herself.Â
“Can’t I talk to you without needing something?”

Look, you take care of me, and I take care of you– whether we like it or not.

Now Esme actually rolled her eyes so fr back she could probably see her brain, or a portion of it. It was to soon for this– too soon after her nap. Then again, knowing him, of course he’d go after her while she was sleeping. She takes a good 15 minuets to actually be up, and lord knows what she could be spouting out of her mouth right now.
“Grayson–god damnit– you know what I mean.” She started, placing her forehead in her hand and running finger through her mass of hair. Irritated green eyes met with his pair of amused brown ones, and she sighed.  “You miss me so much over the course of a night you just had to see me? Or is there a reason for you being here?”
Grayson had already found something else to focus on, this being the book in his hands. It didn’t have a title on the front and the spine was too worn to read when he tilted it to the side, so he cracked it open to a random page in the middle. It seemed to be something about star charts, and he skimmed over the page to try and find something he understood. It wasn’t until she started her final sentence that he realized she was still talking to him, and he looked up. “What was that?”
Oh god– oh course he had to remind her. Even if she was able to get him back for it in full, thinking about it still pissed her off. “Thats not how friendly works in the normal world, Corner, you know that.” Esme groaned, picking herself up since he didnt look like he’d help her any time soon.
The next part, though, she mumbled “And it had to be the day i straightened my hair all out, you little shit.”
He stayed crouched down with the book in hand, not remembering now what it was he had been planning to do with it. He was close to making some comment about finally having to look up to see her, but she spoke before he could, and it slipped from his mind. “The normal world? As opposed to what?”
“That?” Talli pointed to the poster somewhat behind one of the booths, “That is pin the eye on the zombie,” she laughed, though she was rather curious as to how someone could be so disinterested in such an elaborately planned event.
When she pointed it out as well, Grayson ended up looking over fully to see if she was telling the truth about what he had said he was interested in. “Oh.” He shrugged, unbothered, and gave a half smile. “I’m sure it’s thrilling.”
Esme didn’t even look up at the possible perpetrator. Hell, she could tell who it was just by the sound of his voice– and honestly, shed be lying if she wasn’t sure if she was chill with that or if it would ruin her day.
Shame, she had such a nice nap, too.
“Well damn, Grayson, if you wanted to wake me up so badly you could’ve done it in a nicer way. Save these poor books the harm.”
“I didn’t throw water on you. Seems like a friendly enough awakening to me.” He looked down at one of the books on the floor, then crouched down to pick it up.
“Some of the stuff? Well what stuff? C’mon you have to be interested in something at this shindig!” Tallulah gesticulated wildly, trying to spur some enthusiasm from the kid.
Grayson blinked at her a few times in rapid succession, as though expecting her to disappear if he just tried hard enough, and then sighed and pointed to a random decoration on one of the walls. “That,” he said without looking at it properly.

Nora shrugged, still looking at the box. “I-It’s okay. B-Because you’re trying. I-” she blushed. “I-It’s stupid, I know. I-I just can’t help it.” She really was over him being here. Why was he? He seemed like he really wanted to be somewhere else, so why was he still here?
Grayson looked back over his shoulder again, his desire to return to the castle almost winning out over curiosity this time. Only his lack of discomfort in asking awkward questions kept him in place. “What’s the box? Is it a plant coffin?”
