okay, but this is actually a really useful thing that can almost only be accomplished in fanworks. Everyone already has the pre-existing knowledge that Tommy=Theseus and Wilbur=Siren, so when those characters are introduced it acts as an effective way to signal the kind of relationship and interactions that these characters will have and can serve as a unique way to show valuable information to the audience that paints the story in a new light. For example, if I was reading a fic about Wilbur and Techno searching for their long lost brother Theseus and then it cuts to a B-plot with Tommy. With the foreknowledge that Tommy and Theseus are one in the same, I can already solidly expect the reveal that Tommy is the long lost brother later on which codes scenes where the brothers interact to have more depth and nuance than if the audience hadn’t made that connection. (And I’m personally a sucker for secret identity plots)

Another example, if Tommy is the superhero Theseus and he fights the villain Siren then goes home to hangout with his brother Wilbur. Then, because of my previous knowledge I have an understanding of that completely changes some of the dynamics at play without the author having to explicitly state that Tommy is unknowingly fighting his own brother. Which helps preserve the potency when identities are revealed while ensuring that it was well foreseen by the audience

Similarly, if I’m reading a fic where Wilbur and Techno are talking about trying to accomplish an objective before their father comes and then a nearby crow flies off to the distance then I can safely assume that Phil will be coming soon because of the pre-existing connections between Phil and crows.

TLDR: The reliance of fanfic authors on familiar motifs/references serves as a useful way to create allusions and narrative shorthand without having to explain everything because it relies on the audience’s preexisting knowledge of the material

YOU GET IT!!!! I always LOVE it when they do this because it adds so much depth (like you were saying). Literally one of my favorite tropes ever which I try to include in my DSMP superhero fics is that Wilbur loves Tommy (platonically) as his brother, but HATES Theseus the vigilante. It adds so much knowing that they’re the exact same person and act quite similar, but Wilbur can’t get over his past grudges to accept that.

Especially when the reveal happens and he ends up being mad a Tommy. Like he’s your brother no matter what but turns out he’s a vigilante and suddenly you can’t even stand to look at him anymore??? You just told him an hour ago that you’d do whatever you could to keep him by your side but now you’re throwing him away like unneeded trash just because he’s also a vigilante???

I feel like knowing the identities really can foreshadow plot points which have yet to come. Like if we know Wilbur hates vigilantes, and we are aware of Tommy’s secret vigilante identity, then it’s clear some sort of conflict is gonna happen when that reveal occurs.

to an extent i think discussing how anti-trans legisliation will affect non-trans people is good because it highlights that we're not actually that different and our problems will always have overlap. unfortunately like 90% of the time i see this come up it has the tone of "this is an outrage, this law that violently restricts trans rights might make things harder for NORMAL people too!!" and i want to start killing.

Something I keep thinking about is how a lot of people consider it a good thing that children cannot by themselves consent (or refuse consent) to medical treatments. Some people do kinda get it that maybe it might be a problem with stuff like kids not being able to access trans healthcare, or kids being refused vaccination by antivaxx parents. But in general I see that most people are actually okay with this idea for the most part.

And like... you do get that that is kinda insane, right?

Because this is something that so often leads to suffering. And I am saying this as someone disabled, who had so many issues due to this in his childhood.

Just three examples: when I was 7, I was supposed to get checked for autism. My mother did not want an autistic child. Since she just could have a "neurotypical" child by refusing diagnosis, she did just that.

When I was 12, my mother had decided I needed a certain plastic surgery (one that had a minor health benefit, but still was largely a beauty thing). I did not want it. I really, really did not want it. We still went through almost the entire process until thankfully there was a doctor who went: "Wait, this is elective. I am refusing to do this on a child that does not want it."

And when I was 14 my mother refused to get me to the hospital when I had severe food poisoning. She refused me hospital treatment for almost two weeks. By the time I got actually taken to the hospital I was almost dead.

And here is the thing: all of this should just not happen. The doctor when I was 12 was cool, but... he refused to do the surgery because he had the right to make a conscience call. Legally my mother was in the right to force me into that elective surgery. And that just should not be the case.

A lot of children die and suffer due to their legal inability to consent - or refuse consent - to medical treatments. And I wish y'all would understand that.

Whenever this is brought up, people will go: "Oh, but parents will decide what is best for the child." And here is the thing: No, they are not. There is so much stuff out there showing that indeed, a lot of parents suck at this. Some out of malice, some because they are religious nuts, and some because they literally treat their kids like some sort of doll or some shit.
