i. I love you in the way backed up freeway traffic loves a car accident – a beige sedan wrapped around the front of a truck, the road a scrapyard of shattered glass and twisted metal, and every driver straining their necks to catch a glimpse of the bodies they know are there. Eyes wide open, fearful and morbidly curious; no one wants to lay their gaze on a corpse, but they can’t seem to look away, no matter how they’re hurried along, no matter how they’re warned. ii. I love you in the way a forest fire loves the woods. The earth is charred and eaten out by flame, grimy soot smothering the once vibrant grass, and firefighters trudge through the wreckage in heavy rubber boots and smoke hoods to clear out debris. Their lungs expand and struggle for oxygen, choked out by smoke, and the fire rages on, undeterred. iii. I love you in the way the rocky shore loves a shipwreck; scattered, jagged planks of splintered wood that jut from the ocean’s tides like fingers reaching out for help. This is an island that knows no footsteps, just the sweet, mellifluous sound of driftwood nudging up onto soft golden sand. There is no flaw in the sea’s waves; the moon pushes and pulls, and the water opens her arms like an old lover. iv. I love you in the way that opiates love an addict. ‘Trust me,’ they say. ‘One last time. Don’t give up on me.’ They whisper sweet nothings. They mean their promise when they say it, and then two hours later, you are on the floor, and you are dead, or you are dying. ‘I won’t hurt you again,’ they say. ‘Trust me.’ v. I love you, but I will destroy you from the inside out, and I will not fight your battles but instead I will become one, and I will not vomit up false promises of forever, because when I say that I will love you wholly and without condition, I mean every word. And I will force you to bare your throat to me, and I will rip it from you because I love you in the way that feral dogs love to bite, I love you in the way that a hurricane loves a city, I love you in the way that cancer loves the woman that it killed. vi. In short: I love you in the way your parents warned you about.
