This sweet red delight in a glass is what we call sorrel in these here parts. It’s a local fruit with a green interior and red exterior that grows on a tree we once had in our front yard when I was a wee tot. It was awesome. (That, pigeon peas and a humongous pine Christmas tree we had to eventually chop down, amongst others ... that was a sad, sad day.)
We boil the red outer parts, add sugar (spices optional) and toss the green interior seeds in the hope it springs another sorrel plant for next season when it is usually harvested.
It can be served hot/warm with slight sugar almost like a cider, or cold with lots of ice and a nice garnish if you are entertaining for the holidays. The sugar tends to placate the natural acidity of the fruit. You can even make jam after it’s boiled, if you are so creatively inclined :)
There you have it ... sorrel my friends! Happy Holidays.
p.s. one of the Santa bears on my workstation at home was a gift after a co-worker of mine got tired of me coming into his office looking at his Santa bears with googly eyes! (I’m slightly abashed after all this time. All in good fun) Those were the good ole days of full-time work-life.
