Tgcf spoilers!

Maybe I’m overthinking it but I think tgcf is basically about solving the question of « Two people and a Cup of Water »

Two people need satiation but there’s only one ressource, what do you do?

Mu Qing chooses the most worthy person : as we saw what happened in the auspiscious land, Mu Qing cares deeply about rank and apparences. There was one land and two groups wanted it. What did he do? He chose the more « important » group, the one with the heavenly officials, the one he needed in order to ascend and secure his future; and not his friend, now banished who has the lowest status and is not of any use.

Then there’s Feng Xin who doesn’t know who to give the cup to, and wants the people to choose among themself. He is a simple person who goes with the flow and does what he’s told: you tell him to be the prince’s personal guard and he’ll be loyal to a fault, you tell him to go away and he’ll leave.

Finally, Xie Lian wants to bring another cup. He has unrealistic expectations and wants to do/ thinks that he has to do more than he’s possibly capable of. And what happened because of it? People put him on a pedestal, overly overestimated him and when they realized he was only human, they turned their backs on him.

But then what is the right answer? What do you do if two people need water and there’s only one cup? Well, that’s the first thing hualian teaches us.

On the ox cart, two people were hungry but there was only one bun (hc of course doesn’t need to eat but xl didn’t know at the time). Both were ready to give everything to the other but in the end decided to share. And I noticed that everytime (or at least from what I remember) there’s a bun they always share it: in the gambler’s den Xie Lian gives Hua Cheng half of his bun after he lost and during black water’s arc I think there’s a moment (when they are on the boat if I remember correctly) they also share a bun...

At the beginning, Xie Lian kept losing against White No Face because he kept trying to do more than he could. And in the end how did he win? By sharing spiritual power.

In conclusion , the answer to the « Two People and a Cup of Water » problem is so simple it seems stupid: share the cup

There is a reason for this though!

The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixate–neurochemical signaling (I hope I’m using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)…people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply. 

significantly: the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady “return on investment”–and this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we don’t have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual “low batteries” in that regard.

that doesn’t mean these stories are “simple,” or that they lack complexity or value–only that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low “upfront cost.” which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readers–they are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).

the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. that–combined with the shorter average length of fics–means that fan fics very quickly start “rewarding” the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. that’s not a bad thing! and maybe it’s something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.

Fanfic, as a genre, has been uniquely helpful and accessible to many neurodivergent readers who would otherwise struggle to immerse themselves in stories. I’m glad so many of you have found a way to love and enjoy reading again! The important thing is that you are spending time inside stories you love–the way those stories are published or presented to the world is just one detail.

I used to devour books as a kid, could read a 400 page book in one day. I read at school, during lunch break, while walking home, while eating, before sleep, just every moment I could. Then I hit twenties and I just can’t read like that anymore. I now have a short attention span, have to reread paragraphs, and oftentimes I get to the end of a page only to realize that I have no idea what I just read. So reading books became a chore. Reading fanfiction is much easier, though sometimes my attention drifts even when reading them.

I did the same thing as a kid, and interestingly enough I found that as my overall level of stress and daily discomfort improved, I spent a lot less time reading. Over time I’ve realized that the type of reading habits described above–spending every free moment of my day reading, at the cost of everything else–that was a maladaptive coping mechanism.

As a kid, I didn’t read just bc I chose to. I read bc I couldn’t choose anything else. I had no control over my environment, I was constantly overwhelmed, overstimulated, unhappy and isolated. I didn’t have much internet access, certainly not in class, so immersing myself in printed things was my only escape option. That’s what it was all about–escaping.

In hindsight, a big reason I was able to concentrate on longer fiction when I was younger was bc I didn’t have that many options. I didn’t have access to wifi during school hours, and running out of reading material was a huge risk (bc engaging & being aware of my environment was just that painful). Given that it took a large word count to distract myself consistently through the day, reading large books made more sense. When I was a kid, long fiction offered a better “payoff”, the way fanfiction does now.

That is to say: I chose books for many of the same reasons I later chose fanfiction.

The fact that my reading habits have changed has less to do with the fact my brain had changed, and more to do with the way my environment has changed. My brain has options now it didn’t have before. And it turns out, fanfic is a pretty useful option. I’m gradually transitioning to reading more long & traditionally published fiction, but I’ll never forget that fanfic writers were there when I needed different options. I’ll never forget how much that genre helped (and still helps!) when I was struggling.

That while he had the curse of achilles, he laughed crazily while he was single handedly destroying hordes of monsters

He made an entire volcano erupt, awakened a giant, and almost wiped out the northwest of the united states

He tortured a godess just so she would feel his misery

That he’s actually very manipulative and it made Annabeth step back for a moment and reevaluate her perception of him

That while his dark side came to it’s peak in house of hades and wasn’t mentioned in blood of olympus, there was no confirmation that it suddenly and completely disappeared after they left Tartarus.

Has been the child of the prophecy twice.

He manipulated Bob to kill his own brother by simply convincing him that they were friends and that is what friends did for each other

He was physically abused by his step father

That with absolutely no training at all he killed the minotaur with it’s own horn at the mere age of twelve

He wins a good majority of his fights by simply outsmarting his opponent 

He has scared not only Annabeth but his friends and peers on more than one occasion with his attitude and powers

That he’s considered extremely powerful for a demigod and for a child of the big three and makes the gods slightly nervous

That when he’s upset his powers act to mimic his emotions without him even trying

That he is actually really sorta intimidating without trying 

That we need to stop reducing Percy’s character to a happy-go-lucky comic relief goofball that doesn’t know his left foot from right because he is so much more than that

Well this post has unbelievably gotten more than 30k likes/reblogs and I can now die happy . To celebrate, I’m extending the list of canon moments for those of you who are interested.

Percy has been to anger management classes. 

The name Perseus literally translates to “To Destroy.” Do with that what you will. 

Percy and his mother systematically murdered his abusive step father. And not only did Percy not feel a bit of repulse at the idea of killing someone, he offered to kill Gabe by himself if his mother couldn’t do it, then felt regret that he wasn’t the one who strike the final blow. His exact inner thought was - “How could I turn down the perfect chance to take revenge on him?”

After Percy killed Arachne in Tartarus, his exact words to Annabeth was “She died too easy, considering how much torture he put you through. She deserved worse.” And it unsettled Annabeth so much that she was almost glad Arachne died quickly.

Like dam, if you haven’t figured it out already, Percy kinda has a thing for revenge.

Percy’s powers grow extraordinarily fast, show no signs of stopping any time soon, and are no longer bound to only salt water or pure water liquids but now encompass all water-based liquids.

Luke and Kronos when talking about Percy not only referred to him as a weapon, but an unreliable one at that.

Frank literally compared Percy’s fighting style to a demon.

Percy pretty much took out half of the Roman Legion single-handedly during the War Games and basically just caused mass chaos and panic.

When Frank, Hazel, and Percy were traveling in SoN, street gangs didn’t bother them because one look from Percy sent them running in the other direction. One look.

Percy’s wolf stare was described as “No matter how bad you think you are, I’m worse.”

Feeling emo and just wanted to add some context to this post if you ever see it floating around: 

When I made this (literal years ago) the climate of the pjo fandom was at a place where Percy was constantly being reduced to someone who was too stupid to function and any skill or wit he had was just seen as reckless impulsivity or unfairly credited to Annabeth. Persassy™ was still fairly prevalent, or at least the echoing characterization of it was.

And I made these posts as a direct response to that. Basically saying, hey, Percy isn’t this obtuse goofball everyone is making him out to be. He’s really deadly smart and intelligent (even if its not in the same way that Annabeth is) and can be quite vindictive and dark and here’s some direct text evidence of that.

So of course, all of these bullet-points are going to be directly on those types of characteristics he possesses: How powerful he is, how scary he can intentionally or unintentionally be, his vindictiveness, etc etc etc. 

And without having the context of the time I posted it, I feel like this now seems as if I’m painting Percy to be an “unhappy, edgy, bad boy” which could not be further from it. 

Percy is a beautifully written and multifaceted character. His love for his family and friends is defining of him. Just as much as how far he would go for them is. He loves deeply and profoundly. He cherishes his mother. He would brave fire and brimstone for Annabeth. His empathy for others is wholehearted.

This post is still one of my favorites and will always hold a special place in my heart because I still feel that all of these points are defining of him, even if they aren’t the only points that are. And the fact that it has this many notes is genuinely insane to me.

Uniqlo's limited edition BT21 shirts are really cute! I bought two for myself (blue Koya and pink Cooky) and one for my friend (navy Cooky). I read that some places in the US are selling out. I was surprised to find a lot of shirts at my local Uniqlo. If any of you live on SoCal, South Coast Plaza still has a lot of shirts left, but all the small sizes are dwindling. Very soft material, 5 out of 5 recommend!
