My Friend is Feeling 22!!!

I have not posted something on here in a very long time.  However, now is a perfect opportunity to do so in a very special way. 

Therefore, this message is specifically going out to the one and only taylorswift!

Dear Taylor.

My name is Jordan and I am from Toronto, Ontario Canada. One of my closest friends, Lindsey Wasserman, who goes by the Tumblr name myinternetdiarybylindsey, is a lifelong fan of yours and really loves listening to your music from your first album, ‘Taylor Swift,’ all the way to ‘1989!’ 

However, Lindsey is going through a difficult phase in her life right now.  With Father’s Day coming up next week, it’s going to be a hard day because, this past December, Lindsey’s father unfortunately passed away from cancer.  This situation proved to be a very difficult time for Lindsey along with her family and friends. This is because she had lost someone that she had known and loved for all of her life.    

However, as a lifelong friend of Lindsey’s, I know that the one thing that makes her feel better every day is by listening to your music.  She is somebody who knows and loves every single song that you have ever made!  Whenever a song of yours comes on the radio, it definitely puts a smile on her face!  Your music definitely makes her want to get up and dance all the time!  

Lindsey has been to a large number of your shows in Toronto and in Cleveland, Ohio, on your Fearless, Speak Now, and Red Tours and she had a blast at all of them!  She has always told me that the Toronto show on the Red tour, on June 15th, 2013, was the best day of her life, considering that it was on her 20th birthday!  Lindsey is extremely excited for when you bring the 1989 World Tour to Toronto this coming October.  She has been counting down the days for this special night!

Tomorrow, June 15th 2015, will be Lindsey’s 22nd birthday! In the words of one of your songs, Lindsey will be ‘feeling 22!!!’ For this special day, I know in my heart that a birthday greeting from her idol would make my friend Lindsey the happiest person in the whole world, especially under these difficult circumstances.  

Thank you in advance for reading this.  This would definitely mean the world to Lindsey!

Why is Online Reputation Management Important for Students?

Using social media websites, such as Twitter, has become a daily routine for just about all of us because we like the fact that we can connect with other people and type in whatever is on our minds.  However, have you ever looked back at something you have posted  and immediately regretted it?  That's definitely the case for people, like myself, who are thinking about what we want to do in the future.

At this stage in our lives, we love to go out and have a good time with our friends and family.  For example, let's say you went out to a local bar for your friend's 21st birthday.  The next day, you may log on to your Facebook account and see pictures of yourself at the bar having a pitcher of beer and giving the middle finger towards the camera.  Even though this picture may bring back some memories from the night before, it is definitely not all fun and games when you want to look for a full-time job.

According to a study that was conducted by Career Builder, they mentioned that 37% of hiring managers would use social networking websites to research potential applicants in order to make hiring decisions (Huffington Post).  Therefore, it is definitely a possibility that a manager at a marketing firm may Google yourself and take a closer look at your Facebook profile and find the picture that was shot at the bar.  From there, the manager would think that the actions that were shown in the picture were extremely inappropriate and he would immediately not hire you and move on to the next applicant.  This shows that your online reputation has become negative and, as explained by David Krejci in the video "Digital Defense," it can stay with you for "weeks, months, even years." It is safe to say that the chances of ever getting hired in the future would be slim, unless you take action by deleting posts or pictures that are considered to be inappropriate. 

We all want to become successful businesspeople and entrepreneurs in the future.  However, the moral of the story is that you should always think twice before ever posting something onto an online website, like Twitter and Facebook, because it can hurt your overall personal brand image and reputation and can put your career in serious jeopardy.  Also, try googling yourself every once in a while to see what actually comes up.

Well, this is it, this is my final blog post as a student in MRK 634 at Seneca College.  Over the past 3 months, I have definitely learned a lot in terms of how social media can be used in the business world and want to thank my professor, Bhupesh Shah, for a wonderful semester.  I would also like to thank my classmates at MRK 634 for a fun-filled few months!

How's my overall social networking? Go Go Gadget Klout!!!

Raise up your hand if you ever wanted to know how you're doing in terms of interacting using social media? *Pauses*  Me too :P.  But where do we go?  Well, not to worry, there's a new website that I discovered not too long ago called Klout. 

This website is known as a social media analytic site, where it measures how involved you are in social media, such as Facebook and Twitter.  Klout also measures your social influences based on past social media activity and gives you an overall score that is between 0 and 100, which tends to change on an everyday basis.

For example, the POTUS, Barack Obama, currently has a Klout score of 99 because he has constantly been doing social media activities on a regular basis and that other people get involved by either replying or retweeting.  Also, this man is like the most famous man in the world right now, and everyone wants to like and respond to what he has to say.

As for me, I currently have a Klout score of 55, since I have been an avid social media user, mostly on Facebook and Twitter, and that my friends tend to get involved by either liking my statuses or retweeting.  Also, with Klout, it clearly shows how well I have been doing over the past 90 days.  For example, in the past 90 days, I have liked over 300 statuses on Facebook and have been mentioned by other users over 100 times on Twitter.

Another thing about Klout is that, on my profile page, it clearly shows who are my biggest influencers based on past social activity.  Currently, my top 3 influencers are: YouTube, Green Day, and Major League Baseball.  This means that other people will know that I like to watch YouTube videos very often, my favourite band is Green Day, and I enjoy watching baseball.

As I wrap up another blog post, I leave you with this: If you want to see an increase in your Klout score, take my advice and get more involved in social media.  Post a tweet or retweet about the upcoming Grammy Awards, update your status talking about your upcoming weekend, upload a video of you covering a Beatles song, or take a picture of yourself with your little puppy.  If your online friends were to engage in these activities, expect your score to go up in no time!

How Social and SEO fit into marketing

Search engines are used when people go on the internet and type in keywords in order to get a list of websites that relate to those words.  Some main reasons why people use search engines include doing online research for a school project, going shopping for a certain product that is offered online on a company's webpage, and getting answers from other people in order to solve a problem that they are experiencing. 

Everybody knows that the most popular search engine on the internet is Google, which currently represents 65% of all search volumes compared to its competitors, which are Ask and Bing.

In terms of search engines and social media, SEO is used to improve and promote one's website in order to increase the number of visitors who are coming from search engines. 

Generally, the earlier and more frequently a certain site appears on the results list, the more visitors these sites would get.  This means that most visitors usually click on sites that usually appear on the first two pages before they decide to type in another keyword or leave the site.  These links are also known as an organic search.

However, there are certain websites that appear just above or on the right side of the organic search links, which are considered as sponsored links.  This means that these sites are considered to be paid ads, where advertisers would be charged for every time a visitor were to click on these ads (Pay-per-click).

Overall, the main goal for a website is to get to the top of the search results page, in order to increase the total number of visitors along with overall recognition.  If a site were to be on top, their popularity would increase for a long period of time.
