Project progress blog- Cracks in the road that is evenly paved.
So far my prototype is functioning normally, as I tested the other night in my study (to the annoyance of my sister). However some technical difficulties emerged when I attached the photo resistor to my sunglasses. When attached, the resistor didn't seem to get much signal when I raised my hand over it, resulting in just a droning, unchanged beep sound. This is probably due to the conductivity of the glasses, which spreads the electric current to unnecessary areas and therefore wastes it. I've narrowed the problem down to two things: 1. the material of the glasses (might have to use a plastic pair instead), or 2. the range of the coded piezo pitch on the arduino script (as shown below). Might have to start playing around with the threshold for now.Ā
Iāve decided that seeing that this is only a prototype, Iāll just leave the board as it is an leave the piezo on. Although I would like to attach a better speaker on (I might see if there is a way I can tomorrow in class), the testing and documentation will mostly be done while my board still has the speaker attached.
Prototype development blog- THE theramin script code
This is the code i made earlier today in class. As I mentioned in a past post, this is technically the hybrid of a lightsenor, rangesensor and light theramin script thrown into one. This creates a script which both incorporates the variation in the piezoās pitch when altered by the change in light received by the photoresistor. Therefore a working theramin :D
Prototype Project process blog- two words: ITS ALIVE!!! What started off as a mash of code and commands from a range sensor, light sensor and light theremin script (which I'll post up later), allowed my light sensor to turn light into pitch sounds, resulting in one kickass theremin. I agree that it needs a bit more work (e.g. Get a better speaker than a piezo) but I'm THRILLED with the result. ....despite the fact that I almost crashed the computer when testing my prototype..... Aww well, accidents happen šš What I intend to do now (despite improving my code) is to attach the photoresistor to a pair of sunglasses and tweak the board to match the frames conductivity. Big thanks and credit to Kevin who helped me with stabilising and improving my board and code š. I appreciate your patience despite my board being a little difficult at times (naughty breadboard, NAUGHTY!!š )
Plantbot is moist...... Now that I've got your attention, the soil moisture sensor for the plantbot is now active!! YAAAYYYY!!!!! We used a hygrometer code with arduino to allow it to detect the moisture within the soil. We hope to team up with the affect team to allow the plant to tweet when the plant is below the minimum moisture and need watering. The min. level would probably be below 20% (in the style of the iPhone battery life).

The Alternate Anatomies Lab is an interdisciplinary lab that interrogates the aesthetics, the ethics and the engineering of prosthetics, robotics and virtual systems. Its interest encompasses the post-modern condition, post-humanism, identity, embodiment and the evoking of agency in machine systems. Thus it creatively incorporates biomechanics and biomimicry in exploring aliveness with robots. AAL aims to generate concepts of the future that can be contested, critically examined and possibly appropriated.
Reminds me a lot about stelarc's work with augmented limbs.

All too often, augmented reality exists as a digital overlay in our physical environment. But what if you could actually touch and manipulate this digital information? And what would you create ā¦ Tactum explores this space between our analog and virtual realities. It uses your body as the physical canvas for digital design. We track arm, hand, and touch gestures to capture tactile interactions with a personās skin. We can then use this information to generate and manipulate 3D form thatās projected directly on to the body.
Technical Details: In its current iteration, Tactum uses computer vision and projection mapping to detect interactions with the body. Tracking and gesture recognition is done with a Leap Motion Controller, and visual feedback is projected onto the forearm using a Casio XJA251 projector. We extract a userās natural gestures ā gestures that donāt require specific training ā to drive a body-based 3D modeling environment. A person can touch, poke, rub, pinch, grab, and twist the digital geometry projected onto their body. Fabrication & Ergonomic Fit: Since this base geometry is generated from 3D data of the arm, any design created through Tactum is inherently built to fit each individual userās body. Additionally, technical 3D printing constraints are also embedded within the geometry; this means that no matter how much you manipulate the digital geometry, every design generated through Tactum is guaranteed to be 3D printable. I got a virtual boy today!
Just realised that the idea of virtual reality has been around for quite a while now. It just wasn't as realised and developed as it is today. Take the virtual boy for example. A 20 year old Nintendo console which acted in a similar fashion to the oculus rift. But instead of tilting your head to change directions, you just looked through the viewer and played it as if you were playing the game on a TV with controller in hand. This poor thing didn't last a year before being discontinued from production in 96', making it a fairly rare console to acquire today. But it's interesting to consider how Nintendo would've been intrigued by the idea of virtual reality as a way for the player to further interact within the game. Although not as successful as many of its other prestigious consoles, it was quite experimental at the time.
Memento Mori, and Other Selfie Stick Add-ons
Project by Pablo Garcia uses Trompe-l'Åil optical illusion effect to add visual symbols to your selfie-stick photography:
To reduce vainglory and self-importance, victorious Generals in Ancient Rome would receive Memento Mori: a constant reminder of the fleeting nature of celebrity and acclaim, and that āThou art mortal.ā
Derided as āsolipsistickā and the epitome of narcissism, perhaps the Selfie Stick needs an accessory to rein in runaway vainglory. Or maybe just a way to add emoji to your selfies.
Using principles of anamorphosis, or obliquely distorted perspective, the printed graphics are applied to the selfie stick. The smartphone camera is the only vantage point capable of decoding the image, inserting a graphic into your selfie. Perhaps itās a sober reminder of your mortality in the midst of your vainglory, or simply a pile of poop with eyes.

Selfie sticks have been giving me the shits for a while because they just seem a bit excessive and ridiculous ("can't you just get someone else to take a photo of you on top a bloody tower? FFS there's like twenty people you could ask"). I think this is a cool idea though because it adds a bit of character and humour to this strange new artefact, and also because it is an act of technical illusion. Gotta love some tech wizardry šš

Progress post- The foundations of what we start
Progress on final project: okā¦.. So far I havenāt coded or created the theremin aspect of my theremin glasses HCI. I did however find the time to create a board setup and rough look of the project. The board is modified for a light sensor arduino script with a piezzo attached to the board. Instead of being connected to the board, the photoresistor is attached by two alligator clip cables, connected from the board to the sunglasses. Originally I intended on sticking the whole board onto the frame, but that wouldāve been a bit problematic due to the weight of the board vs. the weight of the sunnies leg frame. This approach reduces the weight effectively. Plus it fits the resistor right into place. Now that Iāve got the look down, i should focus more on the technical aspect of the HCI. You know, the part I'm basically marked on š?

Week 11: Plantbotsā been getting some upgrades. Looking snazzy Ned, Iām pretty sure youāll make it through the winter (haha naaahhh heās a goner š·š). My group (self preservation/ bio feedback) also created a paper prototype of the plantās soil water regulator controlled by a hydrometer to detect water levels. As you can see all those years of reading Pop-up picture books have finally paid off šš
Weāll hopefully have some of the components tested and ready by next Thursdayās class. Looking forward to seeing this thing grow on its own š
