Need a strattland fic where Grace gets kidnapped during the project and stratt basically breaks down the door of every world leader to get him back. Like he goes missing and they get a ransom demand and then Stratt just vanishes for a week. Abandons the vat completely until she finds Grace and brings him back. And he’s spent the whole week telling his captors that they aren’t going to get any money for him because he’s not that important to the project (or anyone) and to please just let him go and then the navy seals or some shit rescue him and Stratt is waiting for him at the air field. And she acts like everything is normal, but she barely lets him out of her sight for like a month

my personal take on the matter

yao saying "why is he talking to us like we're children?" is the absolute BEST because of course this misplaced middle school teacher is accidentally running on muscle memory when talking to some of the most important people in the world

and stratt's "don't worry, you'll get used to it" means he's probably done this to EVERY SINGLE PERSON involved in project hail mary. and I'm obsessed with that

Okay but imagine being the team of Eridian scientists tasked with keeping Erid's Only Human alive for as long as possible while the whole planet's environment is literally trying to kill him. And then Rocky shows up and is like:

“Grace says he would like half of dome to be water.”

“Oh, is necessary for humans to have large amounts of water question?”

Small Eridian equivalent of a sigh. “No. Not needed for life. In fact Grace will die if he falls in water and does not get out.”

“Tell him we give him water in containers that won't kill him. Lots lots lots of water on Erid for Grace to drink.”

“No. Grace say he want water on ground. Also want it with excess sodium chloride compound so it will be unhealthy for drink.”

“WHY QUESTION???”

To celebrate Erid getting their sun back on track, Grace asks for some alcohol. There's a small amount left from the Hail Mary and Rocky offers to take it to the science Eridians to see if they can synthesise more.

“Grace want this liquid for celebration.”

“Of course.” They scan it. “You have wrong liquid. This contain compounds which are poisonous for humans.”

“Yes yes yes. Grace say humans like feeling of being slightly poisoned.”

“WHY QUESTION?????”

Grace is like one of those extremely finicky tropical fish who instantly die if not kept in extremely specific conditions.

Only here the fish can talk and keeps asking you to make it vodka.

i keep thinking about that moment in grace’s very last video message when he says “at least i never have to hear you say i told you so. even though you were right.”

grace introduces those videos to rocky as messages for earth. all of the jokes and discoveries and personal moments he films throughout the movie are framed as a record for earth. but then you get to that moment, and you realize, oh, fuck, we read it wrong. he was never really talking to earth. he was talking to eva.

thinking abt grace becoming fluent in eridian. thinking about eridian as an information-dense and layered language. thinking about the ability to create new words out of layered sounds and the way you can quickly describe a complicated relationship in eridian. grace practicing on his organ for speaking eridian, sounding out the tones for boss/leader and friend/companion and murderer until they blend into a single word.

and that’s how eva stratt gets her eridian name, which she will never know.

look I understand the sacrificial lamb metaphor for Grace I really do but it bothers me so much when people then frame Stratt as the butcher/wolf/whatever because SHE IS A SACRIFICE TOO. She says it herself, "if I have to become the world's whipping boy to secure our salvation then so be it" (not verbatim but close enough). She is not the villain she is just as much of a martyr as Grace.

Eva Stratt carrying around Grace like a stuffed animal.

"Look what I found in the dumpster. He figured out how to breed astrophage so I can fuel my Hail Mary. This makes him the most valid person in the world and I have the power to decide that. Isn't he the bestest and most specialest and wonderfullest little scientist around? He talks like that because he's a teacher. You will get used to it. Or else. He is doing so well. Look at him. Clap for him. I said clap for him."

Love how Stratt is always getting people to clap for Grace and his achievements it’s like telling other people to applaud your dog for bringing back the stick in one piece
