Warnings: best friends to lovers, kissing, kind of miscommunication trope but not really?
Word count: 4.1k (WOW)
Author's note: kind of hate how this came out but i've had this idea for awhile so here we are. hate the ending, but again we full send in this household
You honestly couldn’t figure out how Kei knew you were sick. You specifically avoided any clues to that fact, knowing that his comeback was approaching. You even attempted to text him like normal through your foggy brain and intense shivers. Still, here he was feeding you homemade chicken noodle soup (you have no idea how he made it taste the same as your mother’s AND in such a short time) and scolding you for not taking any medicine.
“You should have just told me,” he sighs, wiping the corner of your mouth with a napkin.
You met Kei while you were both dancers in LA. You’ve been dancing your whole life, he was just starting out but a pure natural, and you two ended up practicing and training together quite a bit. Not too long after you got recruited by a dance team in Japan, he got scouted by HYBE, and your friendship had only grown from there. Now here you are, many years later, still very good friends, you even dance for &Team a lot too! And, of course, you’re still getting babied by him because you’ve taken ill.
“How’d-“
“Your mom called me,” he finished for you, knowing what you were even going to ask.
Traitor. She only knew because you had a coughing fit on the phone with her earlier. At least now you know why the soup tastes like hers.
He sets the bowl down on your nightstand and carefully puts a hand to your forehead, trying to see if you’re warm. His brows furrow in concern and he tsks, grabbing the cold wash cloth and placing it on your forehead. He gently pushes your shoulders back, making you lie down (at an angle of course) against the headrest.
You sniffle, “I can take care of myself you know,” you say, but your scratchy voice and body weakness betray you.
“Of course you can,” his voice patronizing, but you know it’s not malicious, “Just let me help my favorite person when they’re sick, okay?”
He looks directly at you now, his eyes swimming with concern, “Besides, you know I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on anything during work if I was worried about you all day.”
“But, the comeback…”
He shakes his head at you, “Is not more important than your health. I was able to take the day off so don’t worry so much. Euijoo and Fuma would’ve pushed me out the door anyway; they’re worried too you know.”
You’re feeling your body relax a little bit from the medicine you took as soon as he got there, and you sigh deeply. You really should’ve taken better care of yourself. You felt the beginnings of this yesterday, but you just hoped it wouldn’t actually catch. Then this morning, waking up was painful, you had no medicine, and couldn’t find the energy to move. You hope that your carelessness doesn’t make this last longer than a few days.
“I didn’t want to worry anybody,” Your voice is more a whisper now, not able to fight off the sleep that’s taking over.
You feel him grab your hand and you hum, “Your hand is cold.”
“Sorry,” he pulls his hand back and you hum again, “No… Feels nice.”
“That’s because you have a fever, love,” but he places his hand back in yours anyway.
————————
You don’t know when you fall asleep, but next thing you know, you’re waking up in a cold sweat. You’re now curled up on your side, fully facing your friend. You crack your eyes open, and Kei is looking at you, face full of concern. He’s halfway on the bed; kneeling next to the bed to prop his elbows up in the empty space next to you to reach you. One hand is clutched in your clammy one, and the other is providing soft, soothing strokes to your hairline.
“Kei,” You croak out, your throat dry and scratchy.
You hear him shift closer to you, and he squeezes your hand, “I’m here.”
“Cold,” you whisper, curling up just a little more into yourself. You feel like you’ll never be warm again. You can feel the sweat sticking your clothes to your body, you can feel how hot your head is, but everything else feels so cold.
Kei moves to get up, but you whine in protest, and he sits back down, thumb brushing some hair off of your forehead, “I’m just going to grab you another blanket, I’ll be right back.”
“No,” your voice is so small, but you can’t seem to put any more energy into making yourself louder, “please don’t leave.”
“I can’t help you get warm if you don’t let me get up, love,” He whispers back.
You whimper again, curling even more into a ball, “Stay… Please…” You’re not even sure if he can hear you anymore. All you know is that you’re cold, your best friend is here taking care of you and you don’t want him to leave. Do you get extra clingy when he takes care of you like this? Maybe, but he’s always clingy so this is just receiving in return.
You almost forget all about him trying to get up when he seems to have found a solution, “What if I lay with you… Would that be okay?”
You take a minute to work up some energy to speak, licking your dry lips before using your voice, “You’ll get sick.”
“I’ll be fine, I promise. Just- If you’re not going to let me get a blanket, let me at least warm you up.”
You’re nodding before he even finishes his sentence. You really don’t want him going anywhere. His hand stays in yours as he quickly but carefully climbs in front of you, laying down. He gently pushes your knees down to unfurl you, wrapping one arm over your waist, tucking the other under your head. You sigh instantly, the heat radiating off of him immediately providing comfort. Kei rests his chin on the top of your head, and continues to play with your hair. You can feel your body calming down, your shivers still there but not as severe, and this overwhelming sense of comfort takes over you.
You fall back asleep almost immediately the second Kei is comfortable laying with you.
—————————
The sun on your face is what stirs you awake first. You feel groggy; a bit of a headache but no shivers or aches. You also feel the very prevalent weight resting on your waist and legs, the warmth almost overwhelming.
You raise a hand up to block the sun from your eyes, blinking rapidly to adjust your vision. Very close to your face comes the vision of your best friend, peacefully sleeping. Memories of the previous night flash in your mind now- how you begged Kei not to leave you and him climbing into bed.
Embarrassment instantly heats up your cheeks. You can’t believe you acted so childish, even if you were half out of it.
The uncomfortable feeling of your legs being tangled in between Kei’s and the blankets puts all of your shame to the wayside for a moment. You try to carefully kick your way out of the tangle, without waking your sleeping friend.
Your attempts are futile, you feel his grip tighten on your waist and watch his brows furrow as he stirs awake. A pang of sensation hits your stomach at the action, the feeling of his hands on you. You don’t have time to overthink it just yet as Kei’s eyes blink open.
“How are you feeling?” Is the first thing he asks you, his warm breath fanning across your cheeks. Your faces are so close, you can almost feel the vibration of his groggy morning voice.
Before you can answer him, he very gently puts his hand up against your forehead. The pang hits your stomach again, even harder this time, and you can’t seem to take a breath. He hums, “Feels better.”
He shifts a little, dragging his hand down to your cheek, his eyes sparking with quiet concern, “Your face is all red though, are you okay?”
You can barely bring yourself to breathe, let alone answer him, so you just nod your head. Your eyes haven’t been able to drift away from his gaze, noticing every single minute change in his expression.
Before you can even think about it, you move your head forward and softly press your lips to his.
The pang pools into an all consuming warmth at the contact, and all of your focus is on how soft his lips are and the feeling of his hand on your cheek.
All too quickly, however, your brain starts working again and you fly back, adding much more distance between you two.
Kei’s sitting up now, his eyes wider than you’ve ever seen them, and his mouth hangs open like he’s just seen a ghost.
You look away from him, face fully on fire, and scramble to get out of bed to stand on the complete opposite side of him. Your tangled legs make you fall over the edge before you rip yourself out of the blankets and stand up. Unfortunately for you, the pure panic made you stand up way too quickly, and you immediately get light headed, tipping over and knocking a few things off of your nightstand before you could fully catch yourself.
Kei makes a move to help you like it’s a reflex for him, “Are you okay?”
“Yeah no, yeah I’m fine,” you squeak out, still refusing to look at him and doing everything in your power to get away from him, “I’m uh, I’m-I’m gonna go shower.”
You’re practically running to the door, stubbing your toe on your bed frame but refusing to back down from your plans at this point, “Thanks for coming over, I feel much better now!” Your hand reaches your bedroom door and you tear it open, “Um, you can just let yourself out, I’m sure the boys are waiting for you.”
“Wait, but-“
“Thanks Kei!” You’re stepping outside of your bedroom, on a mission to get yourself out of this situation as fast as possible, “See you soon!”
You high tail it to your bathroom and slam the door shut as soon as you’re in. For extra measure, you immediately turn on the shower to prevent him from coming to you.
You couldn’t believe you just did that. You just kissed your best friend… completely out of nowhere! He’d never look at you the same, he probably hates you now.
And honestly worst of all in your head, he didn’t kiss you back…
—————————
By the time you get out of the shower (the longest one of your life might you add) and dress, Kei is gone.
You’re relieved, but also incredibly stressed about what happens now.
Will you still be friends? What does he feel right now? What do you even feel right now??
There’s two messages from Kei when you open your phone and look at your notifications:
(1) 👑 Kei (NOT YUDAI): Call me when you’re free please?
(1) 👑 Kei (NOT YUDAI): I would really like to talk about this morning
You immediately go to your messages and mute his thread, not even opening the messages. You really want to get your thoughts and feelings sorted before texting him back. You just don’t want to say something wrong when your mind’s all over the place.
… okay wait, bad idea. Ghosting him while trying to sort out your feelings is a very bad idea. You’re a grown woman, you can communicate.
You take a very deep breath and open his thread, typing a response.
(1) im sorry… i need some time
(1) please understand
(1) i just need a few days
You can see he opens them almost immediately and starts typing back. Your heart leaps into your throat as you stare at the three dots at the bottom of the screen. The three dots disappear and reappear a few times, just increasing your anxiety.
👑 Kei (NOT YUDAI): Okay… Promise you’ll reach out when you’re ready?
(1) i promise
It’ll be fine, you’ll take a few days to think about everything and figure out how you feel. He’s been your best friend for years now, so it’s important for you to deeply consider this new route and how it could affect things.
And even if you do decide that you feel something more, that doesn’t mean Kei does.
So you’ll take just a few days to gather your thoughts and then openly communicate them with Kei like the adult you are.
—————————
So anyway a few days turned into over a week.
You try not to dwell on it. If he was concerned he would’ve texted you by now right? Plus, you threw yourself into your dancing; your group was preparing to be backups for XG. Also &Team’s comeback was a week away, so they’re busy too!
You’re like almost sure you know how you feel, but what’s one more day right? (She said four days in a row)
You’re fresh out of the shower after a long day of practice when you get a call from Euijoo. He only calls you when something is seriously wrong so you don’t hesitate to pick up, “Euijoo? What’s going on is everything okay?”
You hear him sigh over the phone and your anxiety only grows, “It’s about Kei hyung”
You straighten up, clutching your phone just a tad tighter, “What’s going on Joo?”
“Everything’s okay nobody’s hurt,” you take a deep breath, thanking every possible god out there, “but Kei hyung is not himself.”
There’s a pause, “Listen, I don’t know what happened between you two, I can kind of guess but that’s not my place. Anyway, Kei hyung is kind of a nightmare right now.”
“What, is he like, pushing you guys harder or something?” You try to joke, attempting to get a feel of the tone, “You do have your comeback in a week.”
“No it’s more than that,” you can hear the frustration in his voice, so you know that he’s not exaggerating, “He’s lashing out, he’s making us stay in the practice room until every single movement is up to his unbelievable standards. He made Harua cry today! Harua! Do you know how off he has to be to make Rua cry?!”
You’re completely silent, stunned on the other side of the phone. This is completely out of character for him.
Another sigh hits your ear through the receiver, “Look noona, frankly it’s none of my business what happened, but you’re the only one that knows how to talk him down at this point. I thought Fuma hyung was going to hit him earlier after trying to talk to him, it’s really bad. So can you put whatever issues you have aside for a moment and come talk to him? Please?”
You have no idea what to say. He’s not wrong; if Kei is off his game you’re usually the best person to help him recover.
You take a second and look at your watch, noting how late it is. Your apartment isn’t that far from their company building, “I can be there in 20.”
“Gosh- I knew I could count on you noona. Most of the boys have left already, but Nico and I stayed to try to get him to come back to the dorms but he’s not budging.”
“It’s no problem Joo, I’ll be there soon,” and you end the call, grabbing your stuff. You quickly put on your shoes and head out the door.
In the taxi on the way there, your nerves only grow. What could possibly come from this interaction? You try to think about every possible scenario, and figure out what you’re going to say. Once you get to the building, you race up the stairs to their practice room.
You can hear the music playing from outside the door, and peek in the window on the door trying to get a good feel of the situation. You can see Kei at the front of the practice room in front of the mirrors dripping in sweat. He’s clearly been going for a long time, but you can tell by his movements that he’s working out his frustrations and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
Euijoo and Nicholas are on the couches straight across from you, and you try to lock eyes with Euijoo. Thankfully he spots you pretty quickly and taps Nicholas on the shoulder. They grab their bags and say something to Kei that you can’t hear, coming to the door.
They step outside of the door where you are and both give you hugs.
“Thanks again noona, he’s been nonstop all day,” Euijoo says, and Nicholas nods in agreement.
You smile at them, trying not to show how scared you are, “It’s really no problem. You know I’d do anything for you guys, and Kei too.”
“Especially Kei,” Nicholas says with a smirk, but Euijoo elbows his ribs and he lets out a tiny yelp, clearing his throat, “Do you know what you’re going to do yet?”
You had a feeling they would’ve figured out what was going on by now. Maybe not the details, but at least the context.
You smile a little more softly this time, a little more genuine, “Yeah I think I do.”
They exchange a look with each other and share matching (contained) excitement. As they take their leave, they give you little encouraging shoulder pats, with “you got this” and “go get him” thrown in there.
Once they’re out of sight, you take a deep breath and open the door to the practice room.
Stepping inside, Kei is still locked on his form in the mirror in concentration as the music plays. You watch him for a beat, just taking in how he moves. Even with the tension in his movements, he’s still fully in his element here.
After a minute or two, the music stops and Kei walks directly over to the stereo, not even sparing a glance at you. You wait patiently as he turns off the stereo with his back to you, “What are you doing here?”
You try not to react to the harsh tone of his voice. You take a breath, keeping your voice steady, “Euijoo called me.”
Kei scoffs, turning to grab his water bottle, “Of course he did.”
You start to wander closer to him around the practice room to ease some tension, “He’s worried about you, Kei. They all are.”
“Well they don’t need to be.”
You bite your lip, “I heard you’ve been a little more harsh than usual.”
“Maybe I need to be more harsh,” he spits, still refusing to look at you, “We have our comeback in just a few more days.”
You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose, “Kei you yelled at Harua.”
“Yeah well maybe he should have gotten the steps right!” He shouts at you, finally looking your way. Even from across the room, you can see the anger, but even more so the hurt in his eyes.
You don’t know what to say, so he continues, his voice getting louder with every point, “Maybe if my team could get the dance right, I wouldn’t be so upset. Maybe if I had someone to talk to about it I wouldn’t be so built up. And maybe if my best friend didn’t play with my emotions and leave me hanging for a week I wouldn’t be lashing out!”
The last one hit hard, but you saw it coming. You knew the real reason he was so angry, and you try not to let it get to you too much in the moment. You can feel a bubble of frustration building in your chest, but you swallow it down, “Okay I get it, you’re angry with me. And you have every right to be. But just because you’re upset and angry at me, does not mean you can take it out on the boys.”
You close your eyes and take another calming breath, “Be mad at me all you want Kei, but don’t you dare project that onto everyone else. They did nothing to deserve it.”
At this point, Kei’s eyes are on the floor. You can see his hands curled up into fists and his jaw clenching, but you can also see some of the anger subsiding. There’s a minute of silence before he speaks, “Okay, yeah. You’re right… I’ll apologize to them.”
You nod, and wrap your arms around yourself, not knowing where to continue from here.
A little quieter this time, Kei speaks up again, “Why didn’t you talk to me?”
The emotion in his voice has your heart twisting painfully. You take a small step closer, still almost on complete opposite ends of the practice room. Your voice echos as you respond, “It wasn’t intentional… I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
He nods in understanding, but still has a hard time looking at you.
You continue, taking tentative steps closer, “I needed some time to sort out how I was feeling. It took longer than I wanted yeah, but I wanted to be absolutely sure how I felt,” you stop in the middle of the room.
He looks at you finally, “What do you feel?”
Here goes nothing, “Kei, you are the most important person in my life. I am so incredibly lucky to be able to call you my closest and dearest friend. And somewhere down the line, things started changing for me… I never intended to look into it any more because you’re too important to me to lose, so I just kind of buried it…”
You take another pause, noticing how he’s cautiously walking closer to you. You mildly panic and look down at the floor, not wanting to look at him directly for the next part, “But then you came over and took care of me without a second thought. You talked to my mom and made my favorite soup and you did it all because that’s just the kind of person you are. And waking up next to you should have scared me but I’ve never felt more natural than being wrapped in your arms.
“Then I kissed you… and kissing you almost felt like second nature to me… I didn’t even hesitate for a second. Because that’s how strong I know my feelings for you are. But then you didn’t kiss me back and I realized what I was doing and I panicked and- wow you got close.”
Suddenly Kei is one foot away from you, closer than you expected with a look on his face that you know you’ve seen before but have never been able to name.
He licks his lips and softly grabs your wrists before speaking lowly, “Can I go now?”
You weren’t done but you nod anyway, too hypnotized by that look in his eyes to speak anymore.
He smiles, one hand slipping around your waist while the other very gently grazes up your arm to your shoulder, then the back of your neck, and suddenly you’re being pulled forward and he’s kissing you.
That warmth you felt the first time hits harder than before. Your hands automatically grasp his shoulders as a tiny noise leaves the back of your throat unintentionally. Kei groans, pulling you even closer to deepen the kiss.
It feels like forever but no time at all when you pull away from each other, foreheads touching as you both try to catch your breath.
“I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time,” he whispers to you, “you have no idea just how much I like you.”
You smile and let out a soft giggle, “I think I might have an idea now.”
You both laugh quietly together, and Kei tucks a strand of hair behind your ear as you just enjoy the moment in each other’s arms. Nothing else needs to be said between you two, as it’s pretty clear what’s happening.
After a long moment, you pull back, grabbing his hand and nod to the door, “Let’s go home, yeah?”
Kei beams at you, and you two walk out of the practice room hand in hand, like it was always meant to be this way.
“You’re going to apologize to the boys in the morning right?”
“Yeah… I was kind of a dick huh?”
“From what Euijoo said? Oh yeah.”
“… I’ll bring them breakfast.”
“And coffee.”
“Will you come with me? I’ll get you those croissants you like.”
“Of course, I wouldn’t miss you getting ripped apart by your team. That’s way too entertaining.”
“Okay ouch.”
