From āChasing Another Minamataā (reportage) ⢠A toddler plays by the window of their nipa hut as her mother (partially visible) answers questions during a multi-sectoral survey on mercury contamination in humans living in the vicinity of an abandoned cinnabar mine in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines on August 11, 2020. A separate study conducted by researchers at the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) of the Philippine Department of Science and Technology published in the ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development in August 2020 indicates a US EPA Hazard Index value greater of ">1." In the study headed by environmental chemist Jessie Samaniego, the amount of mercury in the communities impacted by the high concentration of mercury in the environment of the abandoned mine is considered "beyond acceptable limits." In another report published by Samaniego last October, chromium concentration in groundwater from newly drilled boreholes in the area were found to have exceeded WHO and Philippine environmental regulation values. Chromium is naturally occurring in ultramafic rocks where mercury minerals are deposited during geological intrusion. Its hexavalent form is highly toxic to humans and naturally transported in water systems. 50mm #VIReframingHistory #PhotoVogueFestival #PuertoPrincesa #Palawan #documentary #mercury #MinamataConventionOnMercury #MinamataDisease #Chronic Exposure #MercuryPathways #PortraitsForEnvironment #HeadshotsForEnvironment .@alessiaglaviano .@vogueitalia === (at Pulang Lupa, Sta.
