PSA for those writing coffee shop AUs, bakery AUs, etc.
I have worked in the food service industry for 20 years and I just wanted to make an informational list of common mistakes or misconceptions I see in writing about said industry. Not trying to be a jerk, just thought I would try to make a helpful list! I will add more if I think of any and please feel free to ask any questions you may have!
- it's cookie dough, not cookie batter. Doughs are for thicker stuff, typically something you can pick up in your hand (cookies, bread). Batters are more liquid and pourable (cakes, brownies, muffins)
- one person cannot make all the products from scratch and bake everything themselves unless they are a very slow business. Most of the time someone has a specific thing they do weather it's focused on specific products or split up like one person does the batters/doughs, one person preps and bakes, one person decorates. Sometimes one person does multiple things but generally not every single thing every day by themselves
- Front of House = people interacting with customers like barista, waiter, person at the register. Back of House = people making the food (line cook, baker, etc), dish washer (the worst job in the world, I salute all dishwashers everywhere)
- if they're doing stuff like bagels, doughnuts, breakfast pastries, cinnamon rolls, bread, etc they are there EARLY. Depending on the product some people start working at 2 in the morning. I saw a published book that had someone making dozens and dozens of cinnamon rolls from scratch in like one hour. Not possible even though I wish it was
- frosting, icing, and glaze are all different things. Frosting is the thicker stuff you see on cakes and cupcakes. Icing is typically for cookies, especially the decorated cut out sugar cookies. Glaze is thin, like what you get on doughnuts
- 99% of people who work in the food service industry will immediately go home and shower. I've seen lots stories where the character gets done at work and goes out. You are covered in various substances with powdered sugar in places you didn't know it could get, a shower before Literally Anything is a must
Two-part Drabble Game
I decided to make another two-part drabble game because the last one was a lot of fun to make and write.
Pick a character, a situation, and a sentence, and I’ll make a drabble out of it.
Situations:

Sentences:
1 - “You didn’t have to scare me like that.” 2 - “I just want to let you know that I love you. A lot. Never forget that.” 3 - “I can’t believe you, sometimes.” 4 - “A cup of coffee would be nice.” 5 - “You’re one of the most important things in my life.” 6 - “Do I love you? Yes. Do I like you? That’s still up for debate.” 7 - “You didn’t have to do this, you know.” 8 - “You’re lucky you’re cute, because your taste in music is awful.” 9 - “I wish I never met you.” 10 - “No, I love you too much to let you walk away like this.” 11 - “Need some help?” 12 - “If you’re so bored, I have other ideas on how to pass the time…” 13 - “Tell me what you’re thinking right now.” 14 - “Well geez, if you don’t like what I’m wearing, I can go and change.” 15 - “If you think I don’t feel anything for you, then you’re more stupid than I thought.” 16 - “There’s nothing to be scared of, okay? I’m right here.” 17 - “I like spending time with you.” 18 - “I promise I’ll always be there for you. No matter what. You’re not alone anymore.” 19 - “What? No, I never said that…” 20 - “Don’t tell me what to do.” 21 - “They’re wrong about you.” 22 - “I can make you some tea or something? Read you a story. Lie down in bed.” 23 - “Hey, at least the stars are beautiful tonight, right?” 24 - “I never want you to feel like you’re not good enough.” 25 - “You don’t have to do that. Really.” 26 - “We should go out more often. You’ve been so busy lately. It’s like we never have fun anymore.” 27 - “Sorry. You’re just…really adorable.” 28 - “If I kissed you right now, what would you do?” 29 - “You’re not nearly as smart as you think you are.” 30 - “You smell nice.” 31 - “I won’t let anyone hurt you.” 32 - “As long as you’re happy, I’m happy.” 33 - “It’s too hot.” 34 - “It’s 2am. Go back to sleep.” 35 - “You wanna bet?” 36 - “It’s okay. We’ll figure it out.” 37 - “You’re stuck with me, like it or not.” 38 - “You just feel really good. Soft and warm…” 39 - “I don’t want to leave you just yet. It wouldn’t feel right.” 40 - “It’s just hard for me to forgive you after everything that’s happened.”

Send me a creepy scenario/location and character(s) and I’ll write a drabble for it.
It can be as vague as “Vacant motel, middle of the night” or a detailed plot. Maybe even a scenario straight out of a horror movie!

yet another list of "beautiful" words
to try to include in your next poem/story
Book-bosomed - coined by Sir Walter Scott; means "carrying a book at all times." If you love books, certainly you've been book-bosomed at times in your life.
Caliginous - misty, dark
Dithyramb - a usually short poem in an inspired wild irregular strain. This word comes from the Greek word dithyrambos which was the name for a wild and irregular poem honoring Dionysus, the god of wine, who was often lauded throughout the year during festivals at which poems of this style were read.
Embonpoint - plumpness of person; stoutness
Farinaceous - having a mealy texture or surface
Farouche - marked by shyness and lack of social graces
Florilegium - a volume of writings; an anthology. The word was borrowed into English from a New Latin word that comes from Latin florilegus meaning "culling flowers." Think of a florilegium as a bouquet of writings, specially selected and arranged for your enjoyment.
Goety - black magic or witchcraft in which the assistance of evil spirits is invoked
Lachrymist - one given to weeping
Lamia - a female demon; vampire
Osseous - bony
Phantasmagoria - a bizarre or fantastic combination, collection, or assemblage
Stygian - extremely dark, gloomy, or forbidding
Tenebrous - shut off from the light
Theurgy - the art or technique of compelling or persuading a god or beneficent or supernatural power to do or refrain from doing something
If any of these words make their way into your next poem/story, please tag me, or leave a link in the replies. I would love to read them!

List of Fidgets / Mannerisms
For all the fidgety characters or characters with specific tells, quirks, or body language. You can use this list as creatively as you please! Sometimes, people have little body language tells when they’re lying, or they’re nervous, or flirty, or sometimes just speaking in general. Anyway— without further ado… the list:
┗━•❃°•°❀°•°❃•━┛
Biting inner cheek
Biting lip
Biting tongue
Bouncing a leg up and down
Clicking a pen repeatedly
Collarbone thrumming
Combing through hair
Cracking knuckles or other joints
Drumming fingers on a surface
Fiddling with clothes (buttons, zippers, jackets, pockets, long sleeves, even the corners of clothing)
Fiddling with hair (twirling, pulling, running fingers through it)
Finger flicking
Finger fluttering
Finger tapping / thrumming against a surface
Humming or making soft noises
Jittering extremities (fingers, hands, legs, feet)
Kissing teeth (when your tongue runs along your teeth, sometimes making a slight squealing noise)
Licking lips
Moving tongue around mouth
Nail biting
Pen tricks (around the finger, tapping, thrumming, tossing)
Picking at nails or skin
Playing with jewellery (pulling on chains / necklaces, pushing up brackets, twirling rings around fingers, removing and putting them back on, etc.)
Popping gum
Puffing out cheeks
Pulling face down with hands
Resting tongue under teeth (I personally do this one— I prefer resting my tongue in the grooves under my canines whenever I’m thinking)
Rocking back and forth
Rolling out ankles
Rolling out neck (like a little 360 of the head around the neck; a head rotation)
Rotating wrists
Rubbing chin / jaw
Rubbing collarbones
Rubbing hands / arms
Rubbing neck / nape of the neck
Rubbing temples
Scratching (head, arms, etc.)
Scrunching nose
Shaking a leg while sitting
Smiling / smirking a lot (while speaking, resting face, etc.)
Spinning objects (like a fidget spinner)
Sticking out tongue
Stretching arms upwards (can be a general stretch or a clasp around the wrist and then stretch)
Stroking hair, a beard or mustache
Swaying
Talking with only one side of the mouth (character might have an asymmetrical face if they do this, fyi)
Tapping feet
Toe tapping
Tossing, turning, or fiddling in hand (keys, paper, bags/purses, bottles, etc. I’ve picked up leaves off the ground to fiddle with them sometimes)
Twirling hair
Twisting fingers or hands together
Typing or tapping on a phone or other device
Unconsciously doodling on paper
Whistling
Wiggling eyebrows
Winking (🥲 apparently I wink a lot when I speak. It gives off the wrong message a lot of the time WHOOPS but yeah, pro tip if you have an accidentally flirty character. Speaking from experience 😔)
Wringing hands
Yawning or stretching excessively
┗━•❃°•°❀°•°❃•━┛
Hopefully that helps when writing fidgety characters! It’s the way I do a good 80% of the things on this list lmao. Okay anyways— cheers! Happy Writing!
hi! do you have some ideas for secret dating in friend group? 💟
Hi :)
Secret dating in friend group
Their friends decided that they want to get them together, not knowing they've already done it themselves.
Lying to your best friends is hard. Especially when they know you so well.
They both had different reasons for why they didn't want their friends to find out about them.
Being on a secret date when suddenly all their friends show up. They have to act fast to not get busted.
When asked by their friends, they straight up denied any romance between them.
To counteract their friends' suspicions they now act like they don't even like each other one bit. Not even as friends.
They have quite elaborate plans to keep their relationship a secret in their friend group, not knowing that everyone is well aware of it.
I hope you like them!

Just want to add to this, because all of these are wonderful synonyms, but too all you baby writers out there, please please please remember that many, if not alll of these have special meanings and before plugging them into spice up your writing know what they mean.
Outraged and annoyed are very different, and also mean something other than mad. As do bellowed and said.
Here is an example:
The man strode into the bar, dressed in a disheveled suit and a scowl on his face, not exactly a pretty one either. I read his expression swiftly, the ire in his eyes, the slump in his posture. He beckoned me foward with the flick of his finger.
“A scotch. Whatever’s best. Neat.” He demanded all of this with a curt voice, and not turning to look at me. I put down the glass I was drying and went to fetch him his drink.
“Yes,” I said. I wanted him to leave and get home as fast as possible. A man not willing to play nice is one thing sober, but even a little alcohol could turn these murky waters to something mercurial.
Here is an example (modified):
The man strode into the bar, dressed in a disheveled suit and a scowl on his face, not exactly a beautiful one either. I read his expression swiftly, the ire in his eyes, the slump in his posture. He beckoned me foward with the flick of his finger.
“A scotch. Whatever’s best. Neat.” He demanded all of this with a curt voice, and not turning to look at me. I put down the glass I was drying and lurched to fetch him his drink.
“Yes,” I whined. I wanted him to leave and get home as fast as possible. A man not willing to play welcoming is one thing sober, but even a little alcohol could turn these murky waters to something mercurial.
——
You see how the slight change of word changes the story slightly. Making sure you understand the word is so important and also understanding that some of these words shouldn’t be replaced with a synonym (looking at you said), it’s an invisible word (like a character’s name is) and isn’t really glanced at. But if it feels repetitive than instead of replacing ‘said’ with another word that means it. Go for an action.
So:
“A scotch. Whatever’s best. Neat.” He demanded all of this with a curt voice, and not turning to look at me. I put down the glass I was drying and went to fetch him his drink.
Could be even more impactful as:
“A scotch. Whatever’s best. Neat.” He didn’t look at me with his curt voice and demanding tone, just stared in the reflection of himself in the mirror behind the wooden shelves stacked with bottles of liquor. I put down the glass I was drying and went to fetch him his drink.
I remember being young and having the magic Spellbook called the thesaurus and plugging in any synonym I could, but every grimoire as rules and every spell as a catch. The same goes for words, and getting caught up in not knowing how to use them can make some pretty wacky stories.
