Dan Auerbach - Keep it hid
Artist: Dan Auerbach
Title: Keep It Hid
Label: Nonesuch Records
Release Date: 2009
As the newspapers, music magazines and video platforms are filled with articles, reviews and interviews on and about "The Black Keys'" latest output "Turn Blue" (indeed a beautiful follow up to "El Camino" that I highly recommend to listen to > it's a grower, don't look for a new "Lonely Boy" you won't find it) I wanted to share my love for this gem of an album, that my dear friend Selli was so kind to put me on to.
The intensity of each of these masterpieces, however, is so apparent and yet this album and Auerbach's solo career in general so underrated, that I felt it is up to those that are fortunate enough to have listened to "Keep It Hid" to make it hid no longer more.
The record kicks off with the soft and soulful acclaim "Trouble Weighs a Ton", a track that displays both Auerbach's ingenuity in writing catchy tunes embedded in a bluesy-souly shape, with heavenly harmonies and a simple but powerful production. "I Want Some More" contains all elements that made "The Black Keys" a global rock act. A psychedelic blues stomper - dirty lyrics - organ heavy blues guitar. "Heartbroken In Despair" features Auerbach's ability to use simplicity, that is merely a delay, to write a potential chart breaker that of course did not the heavy rotation it deserves.
The album features heavier bluesy Auerbach signature tracks such as "The Prowl", "Street Walking" but also charms the listener with "Whispered Words", "Real Desire" and eventually sings him to sleep with the sweet lullaby guitar and melody of "When the Night Comes".
Having listened to the album throughout the process of writing this review there is still not a bad or weak track on this record.
"Keep It Hid" has all the elements that make a rock classic and is far more than a singer's side project. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

“To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish... Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle!... You are men! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.... let us use that power - let us all unite.”

Chet Faker - Built on Glass
Artist: Chet Faker
Album: Built on Glass
Label: Future Classic
People, listen to Chet Faker. I mean I know he will be all over the radio stations soon enough and I will be sad to have lost yet another gem in my collection, but his new album is simply too good, too mature, too strong to deny the public of so much genius.
Chet Faker is a Melbourne based multi-instrumentalist with a musical emphasis on Soul-Electro-Songwriter-Funk-R&B. Some might call it Electronica but it is much more than that. He is a true musician.
Already "Thinking in Textures" his 7 track EP, released in March 2012 on Opulent Records contained a collection of amazing tracks with a wide musical variety and "I'm into you" became my personal soundtrack in Melbourne during my 2012 stay there.
"Built on Glass" is his first full album output and there is not a single weak track. In fact the second half of the album or its B-Side is even better than the first six tracks. "1998" with its hypnotic beat and the catchy chorus lines "We used to be friends..." will be stuck in your head after the first listening session. "Lesson in Patience" has a beautiful sailoresque choir in the back and a sax that plays over a calm guitar melody and a dry beat, "To Me" is one of the most beautiful ballads I've heard in years and "Talk is Cheap" is so incredibly catchy and poppy it hurts. Above it all always hovers Faker's beautiful soulful voice.
What a record for the new summer. This boy will make it so big.
Tycho - Awake
Album: Tycho
Title: Awake
Label: Ghostly International
Release Date: March 18, 2014
One of my more recent favorites is "Awake", the new record by Tycho, an US ambient musician. "Awake" is his fourth output and an ideal candidate for an endless summer.
Somewhere between Alt-J, Dredg, Fritz Kalkbrenner and Air this hipster compatible Cafe del Mar instrumental sound transforms train rides, midnight walks or sunsets into movie scenes. Music that is easy to consume but consumes the listener in turn. Based on repetitive guitar licks, spheric keyboard layers and dynamic beat landscapes the album has no weak track and subsequently disconnects and elevates the listener from its environment.
Tycho's earlier records the more dreamy "Dive" (2011), "Past is Prologue"(2006) with its trippy beats and his first album "Sunrise Projector" (2004) display his ability to balance melody and beat, rhythm and dynamics.
Listen to music.
