It's all in past tense now
In the street light's halo, through the mayhem of rushing cars and busy people passing, you see them. An old sweetheart, a love not meant to be, whose flame burnt too quickly. Both of you are waiting for the lights to turn green, to cross the street and slowly make your way to where the other has been coming from.
You catch their eyes on yours and you can see time has not been kind on them. The surprise on their face fades, their eyes soften, yours do too. Their lips press into a tight line, yours do too. A silent greeting, as a stand in for both "Hello!", and "Goodbye, my darling."
You avert your sight, you can't look at them anymore. Memories come flooding in, a sense of loss creeps it's way up on your spine, nervousness is your new state of mind. Why them, why now? You thought you have finally healed yourself from the scars of this short lived attachment.
Their eyes have starting searching your hands, is there any ring on you finger now? If there is, it should have been theirs, they should have kept you closer, they should have known not to hurt you back then, when you two fell apart... It's all too late now.
The lights should have changed colors by now... You should have crossed the street already. But the semaphore stayed the same, and so did your feelings (and theirs).
