Jason deCaires Taylor, The Rubicon + The Raft of Lampedusa, 2016

Spanning the seabed, near Lanzarote, Spain, the main installation, The Rubicon, features an assembly of 35 figures walking towards a gate — a point of no return, or a portal to another world. A second installation titled ‘The Raft of Lampedusa’ depicts a haunting representation of the ongoing humanitarian crisis, with a boat of figures desperately waiting for treatment and aid.

Taylor’s art is like no other, a paradox of creation, constructed to be assimilated by the ocean and transformed from inert objects into living breathing coral reefs, portraying human intervention as both positive and life-encouraging. Nothing can quite do justice to the ephemeral nature of his art; for each actual visit to his sites is both unique and subject to the dynamic, fluctuating environment of the ocean.

You brought back everything today. And exchange, without words, because I'm lost on how to forgive you. You are to become a fading image now - I'm sure when I'm 70 I won't remember even your first name. I'm sure I won't remember your uneven hairline, your freckle in that spot, or your slightly crooked front tooth. Soon I won't remember your birthday, that it is he same as my mother's. I won't remember that you bought me a watch, like my grandfather did for my grandmother on the same anniversary as ours. I won't remember your hand on my back in a busy crowd, or the few times you really wanted to have sex with me. All this will fade and what is truly crazy -all this will fade for you, too. We will move on to new people, to people that show us new things. I will finally date someone who can cook so I don't always have to and you will meet someone who can recite episodes of Doctor Who. And these things will be really and raw and soon we won't remember us. We might think in a fleeting moment when we see a playground or a peppermint candy - but those to will go. Somehow, this all goes.

I took these photos on a continuous shot as I bathed and texted my ex-partner, trying to sort out how he was going to return a piece of Tupperware to me which then escalated into the end of our relationship entirely. My body, soul, and mind, has been so violated and left for dead, in many ways, these past weeks. When my ex decided he didn't love me anymore, I saw a vengeance, a breath of fire come out of me that Id never experienced before. Then after two weeks of space, and me finally feeling comfortable to accept the fact of what was happening between he and I, I was violated again in a way that all us womyn (trans, BIPOC, etc.) know too well. I didn't know this individual well, he was to fill the check mark for my ex of,"hey look! I've moved on! Can we get back together now?!" And instead I was left taking spoiled sheets off my bed I never want to see again, and an ex telling me he has no time to hear of my violation, I should just take it up with the police. I don't know why I'm putting this out there. But the mix of me bathing and ending this relationship once and for all seemed so symbolic in the moment. The lighting from the candle, symbolizing the fire leaving, and me washing away the day calmed me in a moment I knew was coming. I am free now, I am free to love again, to love my body again, to make love again. I am free of a man who couldn't love me as he did not love himself. I am free of an individual who violated my womynhood. I am clean.

Mixed love. 

Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses.

If you don’t live with mental illness, don’t make assumptions about what is and isn’t a symptom.

Depression isn’t always sitting in a dark room, crying. It’s forgetting important things like appointments and due dates. It’s living in a messy home. it’s forgetting to brush your hair or teeth. It’s failing an assignment you are 100% capable of doing. It’s finding the negative in every situation, even the most positive ones. It’s questioning why anyone wants you. It’s not allowing yourself even one mistake. it’s being exhausted when you haven’t achieved anything for the day. 

Anxiety isn’t just stressing or being nervous. It’s losing the ability to breathe. It’s aches in your body. It’s cancelling plans with people you love. It’s taking the longest route because you know it will have the fewest people. It’s questioning everything. It’s your stomach always dropping. It’s your mind constantly making up “what if” scenarios and scaring you. 

PTSD isn’t just violent flashbacks. It’s getting angry and upset or reacting to something without realising why it’s happening. It’s not trusting anyone. It’s avoiding things people never think of as negative. It’s nightmares while you sleep and while you’re awake. It’s felt in every inch of the body. 

Anorexia isn’t just failing to eat. It’s physical and mental pain. It’s looking in the mirror and finding only negatives. It’s thinking all day about food and being scared of it. It’s never feeling good enough. It’s complete self destruction. It’s crying because people saying “just eat it” makes things worse. 

Mental illnesses are often romanticised or dulled down to just one or two symptoms. But mental illness impacts a person in every way. If someone has a mental illness and they’re doing something you can’t understand or they’re not doing their jobs, don’t call them lazy or dramatic or useless. Understand that mental illnesses may be housed in the brain, but the illness spreads throughout the body and into every aspect of life.

And PTSD is beautiful. It is challenging. It is never easy. There is no greater joy when you get to even just one moment of sitting across from someone and knowing you have done everything for yourself and them to feel safe, feel 100% attentive in their presence, and most of all, allow yourself to be raw, to be open, to answer the questions you want to (and don't answer them, too!). When you can look at the sun for an hour without a flashback, when you can walk alone at night without the urge to run. It takes so much time, and maybe you'll realize you like the running, or don't need to look at the sun. But know it isn't always violent, I'd say it almost never is. It is the most beautiful challenge of my life. 😊
