He couldn’t be weak; he couldn’t. Skye couldn’t see him crying like this. It would make him weak. Ash crying was weakness.

It wasn’t what he told himself. He always knew that crying wasn’t a real weakness. But it was still his method of thinking, even if it wasn’t something he verbally thought to himself. It was his mentality and it wasn’t something he could just shake off. Crying was weak, and Ash wasn’t weak, ergo unless a Pokemon was leaving, he wasn’t allowed to cry.

Skye was taken aback, but he gulped and stood firm. He made a fist to keep himself steady as he addressed Ash, “N-no until yae tell me wit’s goin’ oon-!”

He took in a deep breath. “Cuz yir scarin’ me.”

Skye wasn’t sure how to respond. He, admittedly, had noticed that Ash had been acting a little more. . .muted in comparison to his usual loud and proud self, but Skye had supposed that he had just been tired from the trip.

Sure, he had seen Ash being sad before, but never out-right sobbing. And, it was honestly scaring him. What could make Ash cry his hard? Pikachu was obviously alright, but had something happened to one of his other Pokémon?

He looked to Pikachu for any possible answer. “W-wit’s goin’ oon?”

Ace was always far stronger than his littermates, but it wasn’t a power that he was good at controlling. Despite this, Pika and his siblings believed that he would be able to control it some day and Skye even named him “Ace” to show him he’ll become an ace Pokémon.

When he evolved into a Pikachu, the problem persisted. Skye’s parents were worried, as he was more stronger than before and being unable to control that power was. . .bad.

Pika and Skye tried their best to help him through it, but that typically meant keeping him within reach, which made him restless.

One day, when he was having a bad day with his electricity so he needed to get his extra energy out. He tried playing with other Pokémon, but the built-up electricity made him irritable, so after he gets thrown around by bigger and older Pokémon--he becomes angry.

He released all of his pent-up electricity in a single bolt, destroying a nearby tree.

Skye’s parents decided that they couldn’t keep Ash at the ranch anymore, as they believed that he was too much of a danger to keep him around so many other young Pokémon. So, they decide to give him to Professor Oak until he could control himself.

When the decision was made, Ace thought that they just wanted to get rid of him so when Pika and Skye tried to explain what was happening, he refused to listen and ran off.

And after his parents told him to catch him, Skye followed and captured him in a Starter Pokéball (which is inescapable for Pokémon under level 5).

Inside the Pokéball, Ace panicked and continued to do so until he was released at Professor Oak’s lab. His memories of Pika, Skye, and the ranch were repressed (and simply forgotten due to leaving the ranch as a young kit), and replaced by his fear of abandonment and being inside of a Pokéball.

Before giving him over to Professor Oak, Skye stuck a small lightning bolt sticker out of fear that the professor will misplace him or his Pokéball somehow.

Of course, Professor Oak doesn’t misplace him. Because he realized that Ace was the Pikachu he met in the future, so he gave him over to Ash as his starter Pokémon.

Ash:

“Skyyeeee!” Ash whined. “I said I was sorry! What more do ya want from me?” He wasn’t that offended, in truth. He was used to people teasing him and poking fun at his somewhat clumsy nature. He heard it all from Brock, Misty, May, Max, Dawn, Iris, Cilan, Bonnie, and sometimes–although fairly rarely–even Clemont or Serena. It was encouraging to see that Skye was emerging from his shell a bit, at least enough to tease Ash without feeling like a completely terrible person or something.

It was really nice, to be honest. Ash couldn’t help but laugh. It was such a nice feeling. Despite his drowsy state, he could feel energy welling up, bubbling into laughter and joy.

And he couldn’t seem to stop. Pikachu began laughing alongside him. It was funny, really. Ash remembered first meeting Skye, and how withdrawn he was. He just kept pushing him, moving forward and taking him outside of his comfort zone. Not too far, of course–and any time he did, he made sure to take a step back and give Skye time to recover. After all, there were certain things or topics Ash realized he had to avoid for his mental well-being. And that was okay; everyone had something like that. Even Ash. But seeing Skye come this far after so long… It really made him happy. It was a blessed feeling, honestly.

He hoped Skye could feel that feeling too.

As Pika slowly checked Skye over to see if he had been hurt, Skye’s face continued to burn. He didn’t know why Ash and Pikachu were laughing. Falling on top of him wasn’t funny, it hurt!

But, Skye couldn’t help the fluttering feeling his chest. Ash tended to have that effect on him, especially when he laughed or when he smiled at him. Skye wasn’t completely sure when Ash managed to worm his way into his heart, but he had managed it somewhere along the way.

Despite himself, Skye let out a short breathy laugh. Don’t worry, Ash. He feels that feeling too.

Ash looked so done. Pikachu was laughing at him, Skye was flustered, and Ash really, really wanted to die. Or disappear. Either works.

Ash pushed himself up into a sitting position and extended his hand for Skye to take and sit back up with him. Pikachu, fretting like a mother would, brushed Ash’s hair out of his face and licked his nose so it would feel better. But he had to be strong, of course, or else Skye might think he was actually embarrassed. So he plastered another sheepish smile and tried again.

“Ahahaha… Sorry, Skye! Guess I’m more tired than I thought… I can clean up your bed if ya want, though!” Ash was boisterous and a bit rude, sure, but he was nothing if not a good friend. Pikachu definitely knew Ash was faking, though.

He knew.

Blushing as red as a Cheri Berry, Skye awkwardly took Ash’s hand and sat himself up. “Ugh, ma back. . .” he mumbled to himself before giving Ash an embarrassed glare.

From behind him, Skye heard the pitter-patter of small paws running up the stairs and down the hall. “Chuchu!”

Oh hey--it’s Pika! She ran up to Skye, her dark eyes wide. “Chuchu pi?”

“A-ah’m awright, baby girl.” Skye sighed, putting a reassuring hand on her back. “Somewan jist tripped.”

“I mean… I thought you’d probably be okay with it? ‘S not new or anything, so…” Ash shrugged, moving to stand up from the bed. 

Unfortunately, in his tired stupor, he forgot how to humanly function and lost his balance really bad. He ended up tripping over his own ankle and falling right into Skye. Ash tried to catch himself, but ended up toppling himself further when his hand instinctively tried to grasp onto something stable (like Skye’s shirt, which was not stable at all) and knock Skye right down with him. No, it didn’t end up with Ash pinning Skye down or anything, but now they were both on the ground, with Ash having clumsily landed halfway across Skye’s torso. Pikachu, startled by Ash and Skye falling suddenly, perked up and peeked over the bed to see what the commotion was, and, alarmed, moved as soon as it could to help.

Now Ash wished he had pretended he hadn’t heard Skye’s voice at all. Maybe if he had pretended to keep sleeping he could avoid the commotion. He just wanted to sleep with Skye’s famously fluffy blanket, was that so much to ask?!

Aaaand down they go!

Skye tried to jump out of the way, but ended up landing on the floor with a surprised yelp. “Uck,” he choked, trying to get his breath back. “ogh. . .” He tried to move his legs, but there was a suspicious weight on top of him. The breeder shifted so that he could look down, seeing the top of Ash’s head.

. . .Ash is on top of him.

"A-ash-!!”

“Uhhh… Jetlag?” He wasn’t entirely wrong. He had only recently come back from Kalos to prepare for his vacation with his mom, so his sleep schedule was very out of whack. It must’ve been really late in Kalos by now, so Ash wasn’t quite ready to stay up the entire day.

On the other hand, when his mother suggested giving him a week to get used to Kanto’s time schedule, he had completely and utterly refused, hurriedly told his mother he’d be freeloading with a friend, grabbed Charizard from Professor Oak, and flew all the way to Skye just to bug him. Ash knew what he was doing was stupid, but didn’t care. Skye knew Ash had come back from Kalos recently, but Ash never bothered to tell him how recently or why he was even bugging Skye in the first place.

It didn’t matter, anyway. Ash and Pikachu were happy to see Skye again. They’d been friends for a good, long while, and Ash was happy Skye was starting to feel more comfortable around him after all this time.

Oh yeah, jetlag was a thing! A thing that absolutely sucked, from what he could remember from flying to other regions to attend family reunions.

“. . .it’s still kindeh rude tae jist faw asleep oon somewan’s bed waeoot permission, dude.” He huffed. “Ah mean, Pikachu is wan ‘hing, bit at least he doesnae mess up ma entire bed.” He says this as if he doesn’t secretly think Ash falling asleep on his bed is pretty dang cute.

After flinching at Ash’s sudden movement, Skye couldn’t help but stare down at him and Pikachu. “It’s da middle eh da ehfternoon?“ he said before blinking.

“Bit, dat doesnae answer why da baeth eh yae ir quite happily takin’ a nap oon ma bed.” He was gone for 20 minutes tops!

mini-headcanon: game mechanics

The canon of this blog may dismiss ‘game canon’ that makes sense from a mechanical standpoint but not from a realistic standpoint.

For example, mammalian Pokemon give live birth and Pokemon may give birth to or lay a clutch of multiples depending on the breed.

Prize money in battles is exchanged only between registered trainers or those participating in organized illegal battle.

Likewise, Pokemon do not magically forget moves they have learned when they learn a new technique, heal instantly from the application of medicine, or progress through training in a way that is neatly measurable through ‘levels’.
