No Light | Nikki & Lux
A small smile formed on the vampires lips despite himself. After a revelation like that he expected Nikki to ask a question or two about his past - oddly enough he didnât mind. It was pretty obvious that as a hunter the blonde had her own assumptions of vampires and the way they operated. Lux couldnât help but wonder how long sheâd been hunting. Had she grown up in that lifestyle or did she get started when she was older? Did something happen to make her decide she wanted to devote her life to hunting monsters or was she forced into it? Most importantly, how often did the hunter save the hunted?
âA couple reasons,â he began, a look of ease still on his face despite talking about what was serious matter to him, âmainly because I had gone longer feeding from them. When I was first turned I was reckless, I didnât have control. It was a while before I was finally able to control it - so when I did, I wanted to make sure I wouldnât slip up again. And I didnât.â He paused, momentarily in thought. âUntil now.â
Lux wasnât entirely sure why he had admitted as much as he had. There were only a handful of people (two, to be specific) who knew about his past. Only two people knew about his wife and children and how they were slaughtered, the decades of his life that he spent as a heartless killer, and amount of times he had let himself be caught by hunters. Yes, there were parts of his past that he was ashamed of and he knew no amount of good deeds would make up for it, but Lux had done his best to keep any of it from happening again.
Unfortunately, that meant keeping his distance from everyone.
Yet here he was, sitting on the bathroom floor with a hunter - a hunter who had just saved his lifeâŠtwice. Over the years Lux had gotten pretty good at reading others but Nikki Monroe was different, he had known that much off the bat. He never would have guessed she was a hunter - suddenly Lux was wondering what else he didnât know about her. The fact that he was this curious was probably a bad thing.
He was stopped mid thought when Nikkiâs green eyes met his gaze. Yeah, it was definitely a bad thing. âWait here,â he told her, wincing slightly as he stood but was out of the room before she could say anything. Within seconds he was back in the bathroom, a water bottle on his hand. âSorry for umâŠI just went in your fridge but this will help,â he assured her, handing her the water bottle before resuming his seat on the floor.
âSo how long have you been hunting?â he asked, the ease of his tone making it sound like he has just asked her something simple like what day of the week it was. Lux knew there was a good chance that Nikki wouldnât answer the question, but it was worth a shot.
She cocked her head to the side a little as she listened to his explanation. Getting answers from Lux was only making Nikki more confused. She still couldnât understand why a vampire would chose not to drink human blood. It wasnât like they cared about the humans they were killing, right?Â
âWhy would you want to control⊠it?â she blurted out. She really shouldnât be asking a who-knew-how-old vampire why he had decided to control his blood lust. But then again, she definitely shouldnât have let said age old vampire drink from her willingly. He just might have liked what he tasted too much.Â
She let out a sigh as he stood and exited the bathroom. None of this was making sense and Nikki raked a hand through her long, messy hair in frustration as she tried to force some sort of normalcy into the situation. Her father had told her over and over again that vampires were simply animals of prey. And humans were their prey. Like a lion hunted a gazelle without a second thought, vampires hunted humans with no sense of how wrong it was to kill a person.Â
And yet, Lux was telling her that he hadnât actually drunk from a human in ages because he wanted, no needed to control himself. And when she looked in his eyes as he finally came back into the room and handed her a water bottle, a mistake she definitely shouldnât have made while trying to distinguish his character, she saw goodness and kindness. How was she supposed to reconcile the two?Â
âThanks.â she said as she forced herself to look away from those damn eyes of his and took a drink. She nearly spat the water out of her mouth when he asked her about being a hunter. Trying to regain any sort of composure she might have had, she looked over at him, a wry smile slowly coming to her lips. âYou think Iâm a hunter?â she asked incredulously.Â
Lux allowed the smallest of smiles to reach his face again - he had been doing that a lot more than usual. Sure, conversations with his neighbors and others managed to bring a smile to his face or earn a chuckle or too but never this often. Despite the not so ideal current situation, Lux found himself in a pretty good mood for someone who had just gone through yet another near death experience.
"You mean why would a vampire want to control themselves around a potential meal?" he asked, a teasing tone in his voice indicating that he was still at ease by this particular topic of conversation. He couldn't imagine himself having this conversation with anyone else and manage not to get upset about it - yet here he was, sitting shirtless in Nikki's bathroom and going about with such ease that it seemed like they were discussing the weather. He shrugged slightly. "I don't know, but I guess you have a point. Why would a hunter help the hunted?" he asked, an almost mischievous glint in his dark blue eyes.
Nikki being had been an initial shock, but the more Lux thought about it the more it made sense. Aside from her company at the bar, the blonde had been far too calm and collected about this entire thing which only assured his suspicions. Not to mention the fact that Lux had been completely discreet about what he was since he first moved to Naperville and met Nikki months ago. It was safe to say that they both had some explaining to do...and by some miracle, they were doing it.
"I didn't want to hurt anyone else," he continued, his eyes wandering around the room momentarily, "so I did what I had too to make sure it didn't happen again. It took some practice and serious patience on behalf of a friend, but it got easier." He paused, looking back at Nikki with a small smile. "Time isn't exactly an issue for me anymore."
It almost felt like they were playing a game, their own twisted version of 21 questions. And now it was her turn.
"So did you grow up hunting, or did you get into it later on?" he asked, unable to hide the curiosity in his voice. At this point, there was really no convincing Lux that she wasn't a hunter.Â
Very few things surprised Lux these days - it was easy to understand considering he had lived over a hundred lives during his time as a vampire. But surprise was just one of the many things he currently felt. Shock, disbelief, anger, happiness? He wasnât entirely sure how to...
Lux couldn't help but smile slightly at her question - if she only knew what he'd been through. Where would he begin? "It's kind of a long story, believe it or not," he answered, a soft chuckle escaping his lips. "But given everything I figure we both have enough time to do a little catching up." Unable to help himself, he gently reached for Cats hand and motioned for her to follow him. He held back as smile when she willingly followed.
He never hesitated or even looked around as he lead the way up to the fourth floor where he lived. One of the many pros of living among senior citizens was the amount of privacy that came with it - other than the fact that Lux honestly enjoyed their company, of course. His apartment was small and simple, not overly decorated but not empty enough for it to seem like he never spent any time there. "It's not much but it's home," he explained, opening his door and allowing Cat to walk in before following suit, closing the door behind him, "the balcony has a pretty nice view. You can see the park from here." Lux walked over across the living room and turned on a lamp, unsure why he was suddenly so nervous.
"TruBlood?" he offered, not waiting for Cat to reply before he was walking towards his kitchen. He returned seconds later with two bottles, silently handing one to the blonde. Shit, this had seemed a lot easier 30 seconds ago. "I can't believe you're actually here," he finally spoke, a slightly amused smile on his face as he looked at her. It had been centuries - Lux had honestly believed he would never see Catherine Orsini again. He couldn't remember the last time he had been this happy being wrong.
Finally, he took a seat on one of the couches and began speaking. "I left home a while after you did. I don't really remember how I ended up in Ireland but that's where I sort of...started over," he paused, opening his TruBlood and taking a drink before continuing, his blue eyes never once looking up at Cat. He wasn't used to talking about this particular part of his life - the years right before he was turned. Despite the fact that he thought about his family every single day, talking about it, especially with someone from his past, was different...especially when he used to be in love with that specific someone. "I settled down for a few years and then one night...," he trailed off, shrugging his shoulders lightly.
The rest of kind of history.
"I never knew my maker. I came too and had to figure out the ropes of this as I went. Needless to say, it was a disaster," he admitted, forcing a smile on his lips. Lux finally lifted his gaze and looked at Catherine, unable to read her expression. Shit. "But I think I turned out alright," he added, attempting to lighten the mood. The last thing Lux wanted was to put a damper on their reunion but he had this strange feeling that that ship had sailed the moment he started talking about his past.
Lux followed her gaze, now examining the wound on his side which was slowly healing - it would take longer than it could have for the wound to full heal but he would live. He tried to ignore the voice in the back of his mind that told him this entire mess couldâve been...

The real love story of the show.
No Light | Nikki & Lux
It was so easy for Lux to lose track of time - in all honesty, he did for a moment. Heâd gone longer than this without feeding but it had been nearly a century since heâd allowed himself to indulge in human blood. But it wasnât just any old human he was feeding from, it was Nikki - and that alone made all the difference. He didnât really know her, at least not in the way he wanted too. Lux had been living among humans since he was turned but he had never allowed himself to get this close, or intimate with them. Keeping others at a distance was a lonely life but it was worth it - until Lux mastered the art of self control he wouldnât have it any other way.
Nikkiâs voice seemed distant but it was enough to snap him from his daze. He wasnât entirely sure how it happened but Luxâs body seemed to move on its own accord - he was still hungry, in fact he hadnât realized how much he actually needed the this until now, but he pulled his mouth from her wrist, fangs retracting. Lux didnât move away just yet, he couldnât. The vampire was tense, attempting to get a hold on himself and keep himself from pulling Nikkiâs wrist back like he wanted too. He wanted more, he needed it.
Lux let go of her wrist suddenly as if it were hot iron - he realized he had been holding it a little too tightly once he forced himself to pull away. âIâm sorry,â the words were almost shaky, unable to tear his gaze from the open wound on her wrist. He could hear her the blood flowing through her veins so clearly and that alone was enough to keep him from moving. It was becoming clearer by the second that this had been a huge mistake.
He wiped the side of his mouth with the back of his hand before taking a small step back. He glanced down at the wound on his side which was already healing, but not fully there yet. Both of his hands were shades or red, both from his blood and Nikkiâs.
Nikki.
Finally he glanced up to look at her, his blue eyes suddenly full of worry. Lux had been so focused on feeding that he completely lost focus andâŠwell, thatâs exactly how it always went, wasnât it? âIâm sorry,â he repeated again, voice a bit more firm this time, âare you hurt? How do you feel? Are you dizzy at all?â Before Nikki could answer he reached for a small towel and held it against her wrist to stop the bleeding, his other arm resting on her waist to keep her upright if anything.
She watched as he finally pulled her wrist away from his mouth and the internal struggle he appeared to be going through. Suddenly, a thought occurred to her, thatâs exactly what it was for him. Resisting blood was a struggle. For the first time, Nikki realized that not all vampires were blood sucking monsters like her father had taught her to believe. It wasnât just something they could turn off, the hunger for blood. It was a struggle that they had to deal with daily.Â
As she looked down at Lux in that brief moment where his eyes were still locked on her wrist, he had never seemed more human.Â
The second he let go of her wrist and then eventually looked up at her, those thoughts were wiped from her brain as a wave of exhaustion passed over her. âItâs fine.â she waved off his worry. âClearly, you needed it more than I did.â she added glancing down at his slowly healing wound. Sheâd never seen an injured vampire before, but it looked like it was finally starting to heal correctly.Â
As he placed the towel to her wrist, she took in a deep breath. She was starting to feel a little light headed. âI think I just need to sit down for a little bit.â she said as she slowly sank down onto the closed toilet. âHow long had it been since you fed last?â she asked quietly, trying to keep the conversation off of her. If she sat there, kept talking, just breathing in, sheâd be fine a few minutes. âClearly, you shouldnât be going that long.â she added, a smirk on her face, even if she wasnât looking up at him just yet.Â
Lux followed her gaze, now examining the wound on his side which was slowly healing - it would take longer than it could have for the wound to full heal but he would live. He tried to ignore the voice in the back of his mind that told him this entire mess could've been avoided but...well, there wasn't really a point in dwelling on it, not now anyway. He would be smarter next time...
But there couldn't be a next time. Especially when Nikki was involved
"That's kind of an understatement," he said more to himself than to her. Lux turned his attention back to the blonde, watching her intently. He listened to the steady beating of her heart which was definitely a good sign - she looked a bit pale but the vampire learned that it was a normal effect; unfortunately, so was the dizziness. He continued to tell himself that she would be fine but it didn't feel that way. He knew it was the guilt kicking in but he couldn't help it. There was a reason Lux had refused to feed from a human in so long.
Lux had decided that he wasn't leaving her side until she was her normal charming self again, so he carefully took a seat on the floor in front of her, his back leaning against the wall. "A couple days...a week, actually," he admitted, his gaze falling on the blood covered knife and t-shirt. He mentally kicked himself because honestly, how stupid can he have been? Lux had been so caught up in his own shit that he completely ignored the consequences of his actions. A hungry vampire with a dangerous past living among humans? It was a disaster waiting to happen.
And that disaster was currently happening.
"Nearly a century since I've actually...from a person," he added before he could stop himself, unsure as to why he felt the need to share that part. Well, if this entire situation hadn't been enough to send Nikki running for the hills already, that bit of information surely had too.
He turned his attention back to her, his blue eyes still trying to examine her despite the fact that he couldn't see her face. She would be fine...but he couldn't ignore the slight panic in his gut. He leaned forward slightly, gently putting a hand on the side of Nikki's leg. "Are you sure you're alright?"
No Light | Nikki & Lux
Lux could see the hesitation on her face now - but that had been the point, hadnât it? He wanted - no, he needed her to know just how much was at stake here. Nikki had willing put herself in danger and and now she was offering herself to him. Lux knew he would never hurt her, at least not intentionally, but there was a huge possibility that things could go wrong.
Her words (thankfully) managed to pull him from his thoughts. She trusted him - she was trusting him with her life. They barely knew each other yet here they were both relying heavily on the other. Because whether he wanted to admit it or not, Lux trusted herâŠhe just wasnât so sure he trusted himself.
âIf I start hurting you, or if anything feelsâŠoff, donât hesitate to use that knife,â he told her, briefly eyeing the small knife she had used on her wrist just minutes ago. He reached out and gently grabbed a hold of Nikkiâs wrist, giving her a final glance before turning his attention away from her again. He felt his fangs emerge before bringing her wrist to his mouth and drank.
Lux felt his body go rigid for a split second before it was replaced by something completely different feeling: relief. The moment he tasted her blood on his tongue he felt it. He dropped the tshirt he had been holding against the wound and placed his free hand on Nikkiâs waist, pulling her closer.  He was hit with the realization that this was what heâd been missing. What heâd needed. The unusual sensation of hunger suddenly hit the pit of his stomach and had he been more conscious, Lux wouldâve mentally kicked himself for having passed this up for so long. So he drank. Minutes ago he had been determined to feed for no more than a couple of seconds but that feeling of deprivation was quickly kicking in.
She glanced at the pocket knife in her hand, while it was her favorite knife (sheâd never admit it, but it was the knife her father had given her when she turned 13) and did have a very sharp blade thanks to her constantly sharpening it, she highly doubted it could do much damage to a vampire. She let out a scoff. âYeah, okay.â she agreed sarcastically.Â
She watched as his eyes moved from hers to her wrist and his fangs exposed themselves. Sheâd never been this close to a vampire before. At least, not knowingly anyways. When she was a kid and still lived with her family, sheâd heard all the stories and got all the head knowledge that helped her understand vampires and their physical attributes, but sheâd never actually seen one for herself.Â
If she were being honest with herself, being this close to one and seeing the sheer power that she thought had always been over exaggerated, well it scared the shit out of her.Â
She winced slightly as his fangs sunk into her wrist, so this is what it felt like to have a vampire feed from you. She only had a second to revel in the notion and notice the fact that her body was now flush against his before she actually began to feel the blood leaving her body. The adrenaline that she had been feeling from, you know, rescuing a vampire from hunters, didnât last long and soon she felt herself weakening. Reaching up, she placed her free hand on his shoulder, bracing herself against him to keep herself upright. Her breathing was becoming more labored as he continued to drink.Â
How long did it take for a vampire to get enough blood? She realized she had no idea and an even scarier revelation hit her that she had no idea how long it would take for her to completely knock out under these conditions. She could think she was fine and then the next second be completely out cold. How would she know how long was too long? âHow long?â she asked, figuring being blunt and straight forward was probably the best policy in this instance. Her voice barely made her question louder than a whisper.Â
It was so easy for Lux to lose track of time - in all honesty, he did for a moment. He'd gone longer than this without feeding but it had been nearly a century since he'd allowed himself to indulge in human blood. But it wasn't just any old human he was feeding from, it was Nikki - and that alone made all the difference. He didn't really know her, at least not in the way he wanted too. Finally he glanced up to look at her, his blue eyes suddenly full of worry. Lux had been so focused on feeding that he completely lost focus and...well, that's exactly how it always went, wasn't it? "I'm sorry," he repeated again, voice a bit more firm this time, "are you hurt? How do you feel? Are you dizzy at all?" Before Nikki could answer he reached for a small towel and held it against her wrist to stop the bleeding, his other arm resting on her waist to keep her upright if anything.
No Light | Nikki & Lux
He followed Nikkiâs gaze down to his side which okay, that looked bad. Lux let out a faint breath and closed his eyes for a moment - how was this situation still managing to get worse? It was one thing to be discovered by Nikki but another to attract the attention of huntersâŠthe fact that Nikki was most likely a hunter (or a former one) wasnât doing anything to ease the vampires mind. Hunter or not, hosting a vampire in her home was probably the last thing she should be doing.
Yet here they were and Lux had yet to actually complain to his current savior.
He opened his eyes when she spoke before turning his attention to her again. Shit. âDays,â he replied after a moment, having to actually think about it. He had just been so busy lately, especially after his run in with a certain blonde from his past. Normally Lux could go days without feeding and heâd be fine; granted, he wasnât having any run ins with hunters on those days.
Lux didnât put up much of a fight when she moved him, instead he was grateful that he was able to put most of his weight on the sink. He just really needed to lay down and the floor was looking like a great option. âWhat are you-â he stopped mid question, his eyes glued to her wrist now. Lux swallowed, suddenly feeling his throat go dry at the sight of blood. âDays without TruBloodâŠbut itâs been a little longer sinceâŠâ he trailed off once again, forcing himself to look at Nikkiâs face instead. The smell was beyond tempting and the steady beating of her heart did nothing but bring back old memories. There was a reason Lux had gone this long without drinking human blood.
âNikkiâŠI canât,â he began, unsure how exactly he could explain his reason without sending her running in the opposite direction, or worse, in the direction of the other hunters. It may have seemed like Lux had a death wish in refusing to take her blood but it was more than that - Nikki had no idea about his past and it should have stayed that way. âBecause if I do I might not be able to stop,â he finally admitted, his eyes never leaving her face.
Her brows came together in confusion when he didnât immediately start drinking from her. Â It wasnât like she kept her fridge stocked with TruBlood. Then again, she didnât actually keep her fridge stocked with anything, but that wasnât the point. He wanted to get better right? There wasnât really any option and now she was getting frustrated.Â
Then, as she watched him tear his gaze away from her wrist and the blood that was now beginning to trail down her skin, to her face and he explained, understanding dawned on her. For the first time since sheâd stormed out into the barâs parking lot looking for him, she faltered. Because for the first time, she was being forced to think about the consequences of her actions. And the consequences, based on what he had said, could mean her life right now.Â
Slowly, her wrist lowered just a little as she considered him and what he could do. He was a vampire and for all she knew, he could be thousands of years old. No matter what she did to fight him off, if he attacked her, she wouldnât make it out alive. She chewed on her bottom lip, weighing, or at least trying to weigh, her options. But she was already in this. Just like usual, Nikki had dived in head first with no consideration for whether or not sheâd land safely on the other side. Now wasnât really the time to start questioning that.Â
With determination in her eyes again, she raised her wrist and met his gaze. âI trust you.â she said quietly. When he still didnât move, she rolled her eyes. âAre you really going to make me be the one to bleed all over my floor??â she questioned impatiently.Â
Lux could see the hesitation on her face now - but that had been the point, hadn't it? He wanted - no, he needed her to know just how much was at stake here. Nikki had willing put herself in danger and and now she was offering herself to him. Lux knew he would never hurt her, at least not intentionally, but there was a huge possibility that things could go wrong.
Her words (thankfully) managed to pull him from his thoughts. She trusted him - she was trusting him with her life. They barely knew each other yet here they were both relying heavily on the other. Because whether he wanted to admit it or not, Lux trusted her...he just wasn't so sure he trusted himself.
"If I start hurting you, or if anything feels...off, don't hesitate to use that knife," he told her, briefly eyeing the small knife she had used on her wrist just minutes ago. He reached out and gently grabbed a hold of Nikki's wrist, giving her a final glance before turning his attention away from her again. He felt his fangs emerge before bringing her wrist to his mouth and drank.

No Light | Nikki & Lux
The vampire did his best too keep a straight face when he caught her staring even if she did a good job at pretending otherwise. Lux wasnât stupid - he knew he wasnât exactly a sight for sore eyes but he never let it get to his head; obviously, if he was still working as a god damn busboy and living in a neighborhood mainly populated by senior citizens.
Lux just wanted to live a simple lifeâŠyet here he was trying to outrun huntersâŠagain.
âYeah, itâs in there,â he assured her, discomfort evident on his face when he took a small step back and leaned against the sink. Instead of focusing on the wound he couldnât help but watch Nikki (again). She looked rather pensive as she examined the wound and Lux couldnât help but let his mind wander again. Why was he suddenly so curious about her? Why was she helping him when it was starting to become rather clear that Nikki herself was a hunter - or used too be. Were her eyes really such a light shade of green or was it the dim lighting in the bathroom?
Suddenly it felt like the wind had been sucked out of him - or like someone had pulled a blade out his side. It had been so unexpected that a curse or two had managed to escape his lips before he could help himself. Vampire or not he could still feel pain - but it wasnât just pain the vampire was feelingâŠhe was feeling drained. It had been years, maybe even a century, since Lux had felt this way. He felt like death.
He double over slightly in attempt to get his breath back and suddenly his face was accidentally just inches away from Nikkiâs. He quickly covered the injury with his hand because he knew - he felt himself not healing the way he should have been. âYou could say that,â he replied still out of breath, his tone light despite the fact that he was still in pain. He glanced down at his hand which was now covered in blood. Shit. âSeriouslyâŠhow attached are you to your floor?â he asked, glancing at Nikki now. He wondered if was starting to look as awful as he felt.
âYeah. Sorry about that.â Nikki apologized. Though the sincerity of the blondeâs apology could seriously be questioned as the faintest of smirks began to pull her lips upwards as she heard the expletives leave his lips. Something about Lux always seemed so⊠good, so refined? she didnât think sheâd ever hear him say anything that⊠dirty. And now that she had, well she couldnât help but feel a bit of smug satisfaction.  She also couldnât help but wonder how wonderful it would sound if he said other dirty things to her, what with that accent and all.Â
Nikki was snapped out of her thoughts in an instant when she suddenly found herself face to face with the vampire. For a brief moment, as her green eyes met his blue ones, her breath caught in her throat. Sheâd never been this close to him before and as she stared at Lux, she was overwhelmed with this feeling that she really didnât know anything about the man. And the surprising thing was, she found herself actually wanting to.Â
When he spoke, she immediately averted her eyes. God fucking damn it, Nikki! Stop staring at the man! Now that she had finally managed to drag her eyes away from his, she realized what bad shape he was obviously in. The faintest twinge of concern crossed her features for the first time since the parking lot at the bar when she was afraid one of the hunters would realize they were gone. His skin looked even paler than usual and the amount of blood that was starting to seep through his shirt and hand, which covered the wound, was not proportional to that of a wound that should be beginning to heal already.Â
âWhen was the last time you fed?â she asked abruptly, finally making eye contact with him again. Actually, scratch that. She could tell from what she saw currently that it was had been far too long ago. Rising to her feet, she moved so that she was standing directly in front of him. She pushed him back slightly so that he could half lean/half sit against the sink and proceed to pull a pocket knife out of the pocket of her worn in jeans. Without a secondâs hesitation, or really much consideration on her part, she opened the knife and pressed the blade to the skin on the inside of her wrist, making a slight cut. As soon as she saw the prick of blood, she turned her arm so that her wrist was facing him and looked up at him again. âDrink.â she commanded.Â
He followed Nikki's gaze down to his side which okay, that looked bad. Lux let out a faint breath and closed his eyes for a moment - how was this situation still managing to get worse? It was one thing to be discovered by Nikki but another to attract the attention of hunters...the fact that Nikki was most likely a hunter (or a former one) wasn't doing anything to ease the vampires mind. Hunter or not, hosting a vampire in her home was probably the last thing she should be doing.
Yet here they were and Lux had yet to actually complain to his current savior.
He opened his eyes when she spoke before turning his attention to her again. Shit. "Days," he replied after a moment, having to actually think about it. He had just been so busy lately, especially after his run in with a certain blonde from his past. Normally Lux could go days without feeding and he'd be fine; granted, he wasn't having any run ins with hunters on those days.
Lux didn't put up much of a fight when she moved him, instead he was grateful that he was able to put most of his weight on the sink. He just really needed to lay down and the floor was looking like a great option. "What are you-" he stopped mid question, his eyes glued to her wrist now. Lux swallowed, suddenly feeling his throat go dry at the sight of blood. "Days without TruBlood...but it's been a little longer since..." he trailed off once again, forcing himself to look at Nikkiâs face instead. The smell was beyond tempting and the steady beating of her heart did nothing but bring back old memories. There was a reason Lux had gone this long without drinking human blood.
"Nikki...I can't," he began, unsure how exactly he could explain his reason without sending her running in the opposite direction, or worse, in the direction of the other hunters. It may have seemed like Lux had a death wish in refusing to take her blood but it was more than that - Nikki had no idea about his past and it should have stayed that way. "Because if I do I might not be able to stop," he finally admitted, his eyes never leaving her face.
No Light | Nikki & Lux
It took all of two seconds for Lux to regret his words, more so when Nikki replied with something he considered to be pretty personal - at least it was personal considering their current relationship (if they even had one, that is). Despite the situation, the vampire couldnât help but grow all the more curious about his current companion. Eight years was a long time to most peopleâŠ
Then again, it was starting to be pretty clear that Nikki Monroe wasnât like most people.
She was out of the elevator before he had the chance to apologize (again). It took some effort to follow her down the hall, especially when he could feel his legs shaking slightly. He knew it was a bad sign. It was starting to become clearer by the second that Lux shouldnât have gone this long without feeding. He just hoped it wouldnât be issue enough to keep his body from healing at its normal rate. The sooner he healed up the sooner he could get out of there. Maybe Nikki hadnât led him into a trap, but maybe Lux was the trap. The vampire wasnât exactly aware of the rules in the hunting business but he couldnât help but get the feeling that hunters hardly ever helped those they hunted.
âDo you get locked out often?â he asked, in attempt to make small talk once again. Clearly Lux was going to pretend he hadnât seen the eviction notice on her door. The look on her face was pretty self explanatory - he still couldnât help a weak smile from forming on his lips. Nikki Monroe seemed to be getting more interesting by the minute. Lux had always found humans to be pretty fascinating but it had been a while since heâd been thisâŠintrigued. Regardless, he followed her in the apartment.
âIâll try to keep the blood to a minimum,â he teased, following her into the bathroom now. It was pretty small - there was hardly enough room for two people but it seemed like they were going to give it try anyway. Lux turned slightly so that he was facing her - she was literately three inches away from him and for a brief second he forgot why they were here. âIâm going to need you to justâ he paused mid-sentence, glancing down at his side. There was no way he could remove his shirt that carefully so he opted for the next best thing: he ripped it. Without any effort Luxâs two hands ripped the side of his shirt and continue on pulling until he was able to shrug the thing off rather easily.
She shot him a warning glance at the comment about getting locked out often. Did it really look like sheâd actually locked herself out? No. And Nikki knew enough about Lux to know he wasnât stupid. So she guessed he was making a joke. She wouldâve punched him in the side, probably close to where that blade must be, except that damn smile of his caught her off guard and her own lips twerked upwards just a tiny bit in response.Â
She needed to get in the apartment and away from that smile of his.
As they walked down the hall to her bathroom, she rolled her eyes at his smart ass comment. If they were going to get this blade out of him, she knew that wasnât going to be possible. âUh huhâŠâ she nodded before squeezing into her bathroom with him right behind her. When she turned around, she found herself face to face with him, or at least with his chest. The man was a good 5 or 6 inches taller than her and Nikki found herself gazing up at him instead of down at the wound like she was supposed to be.Â
Blinking twice at the sound of the ripping fabric, Nikki finally tore her gaze away from his face. She wasnât about to admit that sheâd been staring, but god damn the man was attractive. âRight, ummâŠâ Nikki began, reminding herself of the task at hand. She sat down on the lid of her toilet to get a better view of the wound, unable to keep from noticing his perfectly sculpted abs.Â
She examined the blade that was protruding from his side and almost winced. âIt looks like itâs in there fairly deep.â As she spoke, and without any warning, Nikki reached forward and grabbed the blade, quickly yanking it out of his flesh. âBetter?â she asked, tilting her head slightly to the side so she could look up at him, a bit of a smirk on her lips as she did so. It probably wasnât the nicest way of removing the blade, but she couldnât really think of a better way and pulling it out slowly would only make the pain last longer. Plus, he was a vamp. She knew heâd heal.Â
The vampire did his best too keep a straight face when he caught her staring even if she did a good job at pretending otherwise. Lux wasn't stupid - he knew he wasn't exactly a sight for sore eyes but he never let it get to his head; obviously, if he was still working as a god damn busboy and living in a neighborhood mainly populated by senior citizens.
Lux just wanted to live a simple life...yet here he was trying to outrun hunters...again.
"Yeah, it's in there," he assured her, discomfort evident on his face when he took a small step back and leaned against the sink. Instead of focusing on the wound he couldn't help but watch Nikki (again). She looked rather pensive as she examined the wound and Lux couldn't help but let his mind wander again.
Vampire or not he could still feel pain - but it wasn't just pain the vampire was feeling...he was feeling drained. It had been years, maybe even a century, since Lux had felt this way. He felt like death.
He double over slightly in attempt to get his breath back and suddenly his face was accidentally just inches away from Nikki's. He quickly covered the injury with his hand because he knew - he felt himself not healing the way he should have been. "You could say that," he replied still out of breath, his tone light despite the fact that he was still in pain. He glanced down at his hand which was now covered in blood. Shit. "Seriously...how attached are you to your floor?" he asked, glancing at Nikki now. He wondered if was starting to look as awful as he felt.
Wicked Games | Catherine & Lux
Lux hadnât planned on things going this smoothly; honestly, heâd just never had that type of luck. When he drove through Illinois five months ago he thought heâd be doing just that: driving through. One minute he was stopping for gas and the next he was renting out an apartment.
Heâd been through stranger things.
Aside from the unusual amount of supernatural beings, Naperville wasnât so strange after all. Being a bus boy wasnât exactly anyoneâs dream job but Lux quite liked it. Yeah the hours were odd, the pay kind of sucked but he enjoyed the company. He also enjoyed his snug little apartment which happened to overlook as small lake nearby, his neighbors were great (a majority of them elderly couples) and his co-workers were actually pretty friendly for working at a bar. Overall, the vampires experience in the small suburban town was going pretty well.
Or so it had been.
Tonight was supposed to have been a good night - all signs had been pointing to just that! Heâd left work early and actually had plans with Nikki (no, it wasnât a date, she was just helping him out with his car). It wasnât until Lux walked up the sidewalk leading to his apartment that he knew he wouldnât be seeing the blonde tonight. At least not that one.
Lux stopped in his tracks in the middle of the sidewalk, his blue eyes glued to the woman. There was no way it was her, it couldnât be. She hadnât aged a dayâŠit just wasnât possible. Standing there in a daze (or shock) the vampire wasnât able to put two and two together at that very moment.Â
âWhat are you doing here?â he finally managed to get out, the shock evident in his voice. âHow are you here?â
It had been hundreds of years since Cat had stumbled upon Lux and his family. He had been happy, much happier than he ever could have been with her, she had convinced herself and she had left just as quietly as she had come, without Lux knowing anything. It was possibly the most painful experience of her life, save for maybe when she woke up the night after being turned into a vampire and found herself completely alone, seeing him so very happy with someone else and then choosing to leave him again. It was definitely the most selfless experience of her life. In no way was Cat known for being thoughtful or putting others first, the very opposite was true, in fact. But with Lux, Cat couldnât be selfish. She couldnât want anything but the best for him and she very clearly wasnât the best for him.
In the years that had passed since then, Cat had mourned the loss of Lux in her life. Not only that she couldnât be with him, but also consequently when the time came that Lux probably would have died. She hadnât known exactly when it had happened, but she had mourned him and the fact that he was no longer in the world, for years. She hadnât seen her maker since the time he had convinced her to leave Lux and she was grateful for that, but Cat realized now just how incredibly alone she was. Sure, she was very rarely physically alone, as she had become an expert at the art of seduction over the years, but the physical presence of another being couldnât fill the void Lux had left in her life.
Sheâd wandered through the world, aimlessly settling in city after city, experiencing all the culture and adventure the world had to offer her, until one night she found herself in Naperville, Illinois. She wasnât entire sure why she was choosing the mundane suburb to settle in, but she was about to find out.
Often, when Cat moved to a new area, she liked to wander throughout the town the first few nights, simply exploring what the town had to offer, and snagging the occasional snack as she did so. Tonight had brought her to a new part of town, to a residential area that overlooked a nearby lake.
Cat was simply walking down the sidewalk when a familiar scent was carried on the wind to her. She froze. Seconds later, the man who the scent belonged to emerged from the corner of a building a few blocks down from her and started walking in her direction. Catâs eyes stayed focused on him. It couldnât be. He was long since dead. But as he approached and finally looked up at her, his blue-ish, brown eyes meeting hers, she knew it was true. Greyson Luxford was alive.
A million questions raced through her mind, but as she walked towards him, unable to tear her eyes from his and her hands moving of their own accord to gently touch his face, as if ensuring he was truly standing before, the only question that mattered was the same one he had just asked her. âI-â she choked back a sob that threatened to overcome her as her hands gave her the proof that she needed to believe Lux was actually there. âItâs so complicated.â she managed to reply, her voice barely above a whisper as tears pooled into her eyes, threatening to spill over. As her hands traced over his skin, realization of what all this meant dawned on her. âWeâre vampires.â she breathed.
Very few things surprised Lux these days - it was easy to understand considering he had lived over a hundred lives during his time as a vampire. But surprise was just one of the many things he currently felt. Shock, disbelief, anger, happiness? He wasn't entirely sure how to feel right now, much less what to think of the entire situation. It had been centuries since he'd seen Catalina Orsini. If only he could say it had been that long since he'd thought of her.
It just couldnât be possible.
His feet were glued to the ground as the blonde approached him, hesitation evident on her face as well. The sound of her voice was nothing but further confirmation to Lux that she was actually there and he wasn't losing his mind. She sounded just like he remembered. The vampire held his breath when she reached out and touched him, countless memories flooding his mind once again. Her touch would've been cold to anyone else, but not to Lux - too him she felt perfect.
Apparently some things would never change.
Unable to stop himself, Lux gently cupped Cats face in his hands, his thumbs gently tracing her skin. "You're real," he half whispered, more to himself than to her. It was then that the brunette finally wrapped his head around what Cat had said. They were both vampires. Lux couldn't ignore the feeling in the pit of his stomach at the realization of what this all meant. Catalina had died. Suddenly his mind was racing again. How did it happen? Had she chosen this life unlike him? Did she get a chance to live a normal life before it happened? Had she lived a happy life without him?
Lux finally let go of her only to pull her closer and wrap his arms tightly around her. He tried his best to be careful merely out of habit but he knew he wouldn't hurt her - he couldn't. They had a lot to figure out and talk about, and there were clearly some feelings (at least on Lux's part) that he still hadn't been able to bury...even if he wasn't entirely sure whether those feelings were good or bad. But if anything was for certain it was that they had plenty of time to figure things out.
Hopefully.
No Light | Nikki & Lux
Despite everything about this unusual situation, Lux couldnât completely stop the faintest of smiles from forming on his lips. âIâll try my best not too,â he replied, the lightness of his tone evident that he wasnât taking her warning to heart even if he should have. It was a nice car after all.
The rest of the ride was silent after that - thankfully it was a short drive too. Honestly, Lux wasnât entirely sure how much longer he could sit there in ease and try not to bleed all over Nikkiâs leather seats. He was slow to get out of Nikkiâs car, hesitation still evident on his face and in his movements when he wasnât grimacing in pain. The thought he could possibly be walking into a trap was still fresh in his mind but he followed her across the street and into her apartment building anyway.
If he made it out of this one alive, Lux knew he was in big trouble.
Leaning against the wall of the elevator, the vampire closed his eyes momentarily. They were almost there - or so he hoped. The blondes voice managed to pull him from his current thought and unfortunately lead to a worse one. Opening his eyes, Lux snuck a glance at her from the corner of his eye. âFriends of the family?â he asked, knowing good and well that he was once again making the assumption, or possible even accusing Nikki, of leading him into a trap. He couldnât help himself; it was sort of difficult to be thankful when there was still a silver blade stuck in his side.
âSorry,â he forced himself to mutter after a second, his voice a bit softer but genuine nonetheless. When the elevator finally stopped, thankfully just two seconds later, Lux allowed her out before following her down the hall.
He understood the leather seats, but hopefully Nikki wouldnât be too upset if (more like when) he got blood on her floor.
âI guess you could say that.â she replied nonchalantly as the elevator dinged and finally signaled that they had arrived at her floor. âBut I havenât seen or had any contact with my family in 8 years, soâŠâ she trailed off as the doors opened and she stepped forward. Nikki definitely wasnât the best at explaining her past. She never really had been and she wasnât really sure she actually wanted to change that, which was probably why she still managed to have such a small number of friends in Naperville even after living here for the last 8 years. There were very few people Nikki actually felt like she owed an explanation to.
She walked to her apartment, a little down the hall and let out a few choice expletives. She hadnât waited for him to follow her, she simply assumed that he would. If the guy wanted to live, he would. By the time he finally caught up to her, (god, for a vampire, the dude sure was slow!), she was tearing off another one of her landlordâs eviction notices, cursing under her breath. She didnât need something like this slowing her down and keeping her standing in her hallway with a bleeding vampire who was on the run from a few very old, very experienced hunters. That was definitely not going to help keep her nosy neighbors from being more suspicious about her.
Glancing back and forth, down the hall to make sure no one would stumble upon them, she dug an old paper clip out of her pocket. Her landlord seemed to think changing the locks on her while she was gone was a good way to keep her out of her apartment every time he evicted her. Little did he know, she spent more time in her apartment during those periods while she was âevictedâ than she did otherwise. âJust a sec.â she said to her companion as she unfolded the paperclip and stuck it into the lock, fiddling with it for a few seconds before it finally clicked and she pushed open the door.
Stepping inside, she waited for him to enter before glancing into the hallway again and then closing and locking the door behind them. She immediately went through her apartment, closing all of the blinds and turning a couple lights on. As she made her way back into the living room where sheâd left Lux, the first pang of guilt came over her. Sheâd been so focused on getting them to her apartment, she hadnât given the fact that he had a blade stuck in his side a second thought. But then again, Nikki wasnât known for her kind and considerate heart. âWhy donât you come in here and weâll see if we can get you fixed up a bit?â she asked as she nodded in the direction of her bathroom, it was the first suggestion sheâd made all night that was actually a suggestion and not an order.
It took all of two seconds for Lux to regret his words, more so when Nikki replied with something he considered to be pretty personal - at least it was personal considering their current relationship (if they even had one, that is).
