Well, I guess that makes me lucky, because I donât have anyone.
No Light | Nikki & Lux
Lux allowed the smallest of smiles to reach his face again - he had been doing that a lot more than usual. Sure, conversations with his neighbors and others managed to bring a smile to his face or earn a chuckle or too but never this often. Despite the not so ideal current situation, Lux found himself in a pretty good mood for someone who had just gone through yet another near death experience.
âYou mean why would a vampire want to control themselves around a potential meal?â he asked, a teasing tone in his voice indicating that he was still at ease by this particular topic of conversation. He couldnât imagine himself having this conversation with anyone else and manage not to get upset about it - yet here he was, sitting shirtless in Nikkiâs bathroom and going about with such ease that it seemed like they were discussing the weather. He shrugged slightly. âI donât know, but I guess you have a point. Why would a hunter help the hunted?â he asked, an almost mischievous glint in his dark blue eyes.
Nikki being had been an initial shock, but the more Lux thought about it the more it made sense. Aside from her company at the bar, the blonde had been far too calm and collected about this entire thing which only assured his suspicions. Not to mention the fact that Lux had been completely discreet about what he was since he first moved to Naperville and met Nikki months ago. It was safe to say that they both had some explaining to doâŠand by some miracle, they were doing it.
âI didnât want to hurt anyone else,â he continued, his eyes wandering around the room momentarily, âso I did what I had too to make sure it didnât happen again. It took some practice and serious patience on behalf of a friend, but it got easier.â He paused, looking back at Nikki with a small smile. âTime isnât exactly an issue for me anymore.â
It almost felt like they were playing a game, their own twisted version of 21 questions. And now it was her turn.
âSo did you grow up hunting, or did you get into it later on?â he asked, unable to hide the curiosity in his voice. At this point, there was really no convincing Lux that she wasnât a hunter.Â
As she sat on her closed toilet looking down at the shirtless vampire sitting on her bathroom floor, listening to him tease her about her questions, Nikki didnât even realize her own lips had pulled upwards into a smile as well. It wasnât their current situation, though that was pretty hilarious enough as it was, that was making her shake her head as she let out a light laugh at his response. It was the way they were having this conversation, the way that a hunter and a human had so easily found a way to discuss the impossible, and the way that his blue-brown eyes seemed to light up with the mischief as they found her own eyes.Â
This whole scenario was insane, and no matter the outcome, Nikki was certain she wouldnât forget tonight... ever.Â
âYou didnât want to hurt anyone else...â she repeated, more to herself than to him, trying to make the words actually stick. As she thought about it, thought about Lux and the man sheâd sort of gotten to know over the last few months, that sentence made sense. Lux had been nothing but kind and gentle with her and other customers at the bar. She couldnât imagine Lux wanting to hurt people on purpose.
But as she thought about what Lux was, a vampire, she couldnât make sense of it. Vampires and pain were, in her head, synonymous. Her father had taught her that vampires flourished in worlds where pain was a daily part of their dead lives.Â
Slowly, Nikki forced herself to think of the man before her as Lux and not a vampire. Obviously, she couldnât forget that he survived on blood. But she could force herself to not think of him as only what he was, but also who he was. And who he was, was the man who worried about her passing out because heâd drank too much of her blood, and gave her water to help her feel better.Â
As she forced the image of a blood-sucking monster out of her head, she nodded just a tiny bit, as if solidifying the idea of who Lux was in her head. Then she realized that sheâd been silent for a while and Lux was waiting on her to respond. She brought her eyes back up to his and offered him an apologetic smile. âItâs just a lot to... process.â she explained.Â
âMy dad was a hunter.â she began. âA really good one, too. Even though he wouldnât train me to be a hunter too, he made sure I grew up knowing full well what âsupernatural monstersâ were out there.â she made air quotes with her fingers as she spoke. âEspecially vampires.â she added, shooting him a glance out of the side of her eye, trying to catch a reaction from him. âSo what youâre telling me is kinda contradicting everything Iâve been brought up on.â she laughed, though this really was no laughing matter.Â
Nikki never talked to people about her father. But, she realized as she waited for his response, sheâd opened a can of worms for Lux to ask all sorts of questions about the man. Oddly enough though, she felt that any questions Lux might have wouldnât be that bad... or she wouldnât mind getting them. She wasnât sure which was more strange.Â
Iâve been afraid of changing âcause Iâve built my life around you.
Her history with the press has taught Heard to be cautious and self-protective. She switches rental cars every week so that the paparazzi canât easily spot her. To suss out press leaks, she regularly slips different bits of false information to her friends. When one of her fake items appears in the tabloids, Heard knows whom she canât trust. âI do miss driving my Mustang,â she says. âI built it from scratch, and I love that car. But the photographers all know the Mustang, and I hate being hassled. So itâs stuck in the garage.â

Welcome Home | Zaire & Nikki
Zaire let her pull him over to his couch, in front of which sat his coffee table completely covered in half-eaten Chinese food. He couldnât help the grin on his lips. To someone who didnât know her, this would probably come across as rude - to have ordered food and not even waited - but to Zaire, he knew how much she cared about him to have even done anything remotely close to taking care of someone. âDamn, Iâm the luckiest man alive,â he told her as he placed a hand to the back of her head and leaned in, pressing his lips to her forehead.
He breathed in slightly before pulling back from her and glancing down at her with a raised brow, âNow the real question is, do I have any beer left?â He winked at her before going over to the kitchen and pulling open the fridge. He let out an overly dramatic sigh when he saw that he did have beer left. He pulled two out, popped them open, and returned to Nikki in the living room. âAlright, so youâre going to have to update me on all the good fights Iâve missed,â he said as he took a seat on the couch and nodded towards the TV, where sheâd left on a WWE match.
âBesides you, watching WWE matches is the thing I miss most,â he told her, that brilliantly stupid smile of his on his face. Once she was on the couch beside him, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and hugged her close to him, âBecause, of course, thereâs nothing I miss more than you, Nikk.â
She beamed up at him at his praise, glad to see that he appreciated the gesture. Zaire was by far the only person Nikki let herself care for, besides Abel of course, and as such, she wasnât very good at doing so. She was completely out of her element when it came to taking care of other people, and while she knew Zaire was more than capable of taking care of himself, and that he would never not appreciate her attempts, it was still nice to know she had done a good job... or something like that.Â
As she watched him lumber over to the kitchen, she moved over to the coffee table where two or three empty bottles had been abandoned. Quietly, and before he walked back in and could notice that she had been the one to nearly deplete his fridge of almost all of its alcoholic content, she picked up the two bottles and placed them just outside his front door, for her to collect and throw away later.Â
Just as she closed the door silently behind her, Zaire was returning to the living room and plopping down on the couch. Nikki made a show of hunting through the abandoned take out bag, which had been conveniently discarded near the front door, for the fortune cookies inside before joining him.Â
She snuggled in close to the curve of his body, her back resting against his chest so she could face the tv. She elbowed him affectionately in the gut, turning slightly to look over her shoulder at him. âGlad Iâm right up there with steroid-addicted, sweaty men.â she teased, before turning back to the tv. âWell, last week âMacho Manâ Randy Savage totally crushed Ricky âthe Dragonâ Steamboat in the Intercontinental Championship...â Nikki babbled on about a few other matches, enjoying that she was finally getting to have these conversations in person with him.Â

No Light | Nikki & Lux
A small smile formed on the vampires lips despite himself. After a revelation like that he expected Nikki to ask a question or two about his past - oddly enough he didn't mind. It was pretty obvious that as a hunter the blonde had her own assumptions of vampires and the way they operated. Lux couldn't help but wonder how long she'd been hunting. Had she grown up in that lifestyle or did she get started when she was older? Did something happen to make her decide she wanted to devote her life to hunting monsters or was she forced into it? Most importantly, how often did the hunter save the hunted?
"A couple reasons," he began, a look of ease still on his face despite talking about what was serious matter to him, "mainly because I had gone longer feeding from them. When I was first turned I was reckless, I didn't have control. It was a while before I was finally able to control it - so when I did, I wanted to make sure I wouldn't slip up again. And I didn't." He paused, momentarily in thought. "Until now."
Lux wasn't entirely sure why he had admitted as much as he had. There were only a handful of people (two, to be specific) who knew about his past. Only two people knew about his wife and children and how they were slaughtered, the decades of his life that he spent as a heartless killer, and amount of times he had let himself be caught by hunters. Yes, there were parts of his past that he was ashamed of and he knew no amount of good deeds would make up for it, but Lux had done his best to keep any of it from happening again.
Unfortunately, that meant keeping his distance from everyone.
Yet here he was, sitting on the bathroom floor with a hunter - a hunter who had just saved his life...twice. Over the years Lux had gotten pretty good at reading others but Nikki Monroe was different, he had known that much off the bat. He never would have guessed she was a hunter - suddenly Lux was wondering what else he didn't know about her. The fact that he was this curious was probably a bad thing.
He was stopped mid thought when Nikki's green eyes met his gaze. Yeah, it was definitely a bad thing. "Wait here," he told her, wincing slightly as he stood but was out of the room before she could say anything. Within seconds he was back in the bathroom, a water bottle on his hand. "Sorry for um...I just went in your fridge but this will help," he assured her, handing her the water bottle before resuming his seat on the floor.
"So how long have you been hunting?" he asked, the ease of his tone making it sound like he has just asked her something simple like what day of the week it was. Lux knew there was a good chance that Nikki wouldn't answer the question, but it was worth a shot.
She cocked her head to the side a little as she listened to his explanation. Getting answers from Lux was only making Nikki more confused. She still couldnât understand why a vampire would chose not to drink human blood. It wasnât like they cared about the humans they were killing, right?Â
âWhy would you want to control... it?â she blurted out. She really shouldnât be asking a who-knew-how-old vampire why he had decided to control his blood lust. But then again, she definitely shouldnât have let said age old vampire drink from her willingly. He just might have liked what he tasted too much.Â
She let out a sigh as he stood and exited the bathroom. None of this was making sense and Nikki raked a hand through her long, messy hair in frustration as she tried to force some sort of normalcy into the situation. Her father had told her over and over again that vampires were simply animals of prey. And humans were their prey. Like a lion hunted a gazelle without a second thought, vampires hunted humans with no sense of how wrong it was to kill a person.Â
And yet, Lux was telling her that he hadnât actually drunk from a human in ages because he wanted, no needed to control himself. And when she looked in his eyes as he finally came back into the room and handed her a water bottle, a mistake she definitely shouldnât have made while trying to distinguish his character, she saw goodness and kindness. How was she supposed to reconcile the two?Â
"Thanks.â she said as she forced herself to look away from those damn eyes of his and took a drink. She nearly spat the water out of her mouth when he asked her about being a hunter. Trying to regain any sort of composure she might have had, she looked over at him, a wry smile slowly coming to her lips. âYou think Iâm a hunter?â she asked incredulously.Â
No Light | Nikki & Lux
Lux followed her gaze, now examining the wound on his side which was slowly healing - it would take longer than it could have for the wound to full heal but he would live. He tried to ignore the voice in the back of his mind that told him this entire mess couldâve been avoided butâŠwell, there wasnât really a point in dwelling on it, not now anyway. He would be smarter next timeâŠ
But there couldnât be a next time. Especially when Nikki was involved
âThatâs kind of an understatement,â he said more to himself than to her. Lux turned his attention back to the blonde, watching her intently. He listened to the steady beating of her heart which was definitely a good sign - she looked a bit pale but the vampire learned that it was a normal effect; unfortunately, so was the dizziness. He continued to tell himself that she would be fine but it didnât feel that way. He knew it was the guilt kicking in but he couldnât help it. There was a reason Lux had refused to feed from a human in so long.
Lux had decided that he wasnât leaving her side until she was her normal charming self again, so he carefully took a seat on the floor in front of her, his back leaning against the wall. âA couple daysâŠa week, actually,â he admitted, his gaze falling on the blood covered knife and t-shirt. He mentally kicked himself because honestly, how stupid can he have been? Lux had been so caught up in his own shit that he completely ignored the consequences of his actions. A hungry vampire with a dangerous past living among humans? It was a disaster waiting to happen.
And that disaster was currently happening.
âNearly a century since Iâve actuallyâŠfrom a person,â he added before he could stop himself, unsure as to why he felt the need to share that part. Well, if this entire situation hadnât been enough to send Nikki running for the hills already, that bit of information surely had too.
He turned his attention back to her, his blue eyes still trying to examine her despite the fact that he couldnât see her face. She would be fineâŠbut he couldnât ignore the slight panic in his gut. He leaned forward slightly, gently putting a hand on the side of Nikkiâs leg. âAre you sure youâre alright?â
With her head hanging low, almost resting on her knees, Nikki could just barely see Luxâs feet as he stood in front of her. But as he lowered himself to the ground, she braved looking up to meet his gaze. A short laugh escaped her lips. If someone wouldâve told her an hour ago that Greyson Luxford would be sitting on her bathroom floor shirtless, talking about the last time he drank blood, she probably wouldâve laughed and slapped them upside the head a few times to knock some sense into them.Â
She shook her head slightly and looked back down at her knees as she fought the dizziness that seemed to get worse with quick movements. She never wouldâve imagined that Lux would end up being a vamp. She definitely never  wouldâve imagined that moments after finding out a virtual stranger was a vampire, she would put her own safety at risk in order to help them. And she most certainly never, ever wouldâve imagined that Lux would look even better than she could have guessed without a shirt on.Â
But that wasnât important right now.Â
Momentarily forgetting her dizziness, she looked up at him. What he had said didnât make sense. Sure, she knew TruBlood was out there and stuff. But that had only been around for a few years. How could he have gone without drinking from a person for almost a century? And more importantly, why had he not been drinking from people for all these years?Â
Nikkiâs father had made it quite clear that vampires were nothing but blood sucking monsters. That was all they ever did. It didnât make sense that he had actually chosen not to drink from humans, when that was what he was supposed to do. âWhy did you go that long without drinking from a person?â she blurted out before she could stop herself. For some reason, sitting mere inches away from a shirtless vampire who had been drinking her blood seconds ago sparked a zillion and one questions in Nikkiâs head, instead of sending her into a terrified panic.
But suddenly, all of those questions vanished as his hand moved to her leg. She stared down at his hand for a moment, before tearing her eyes away to finally find his. âIâll be fine, Lux.â she said as she met his gaze. Once again, Lux surprised her. Feeling a vampireâs touch should make her skin crawl, but if anything, Luxâs touch made her feel more comfortable. What the fuck was going on?Â
Welcome Home | Zaire & Nikki
Zaire whipped into his driveway and exhaled a long breath. It had been a long, long week, and an even longer trip home. Or at least it seemed that way to him. Though, it seems that it was always that way when he knew that he was getting closer to Nikki. Mile after mile counted down, and it got to the point where he started counting the white lines in the road to distract himself from how desperately he wanted to be wherever Nikki was.
He glanced down at the watch on his wrist and knew that she was probably sitting somewhere drinking and watching some kind of fighting on TV. Even if he loved her as more than a friend, she was still his best friend. He was more than acutely aware of the fact that he knew Nikki Monroe better than he knew himself. That wasnât sad. Or, thatâs what he told himself.
He guessed that he could grab a quick shower and go out and find her. He probably smelled like Aidenâs car and the take-out theyâd grabbed on the trip home. No woman wanted to smell that, right? Even one who more often than not smelled just as much of beer as he did.
Grabbing his bag from the back seat, he hauled his six foot four frame out of his car and took the three stairs to his front door in one bound before sticking his key into the lock. When he turned to unlock it and found no resistance and heard no click, Zaireâs hunter instincts took over. Quietly, he reached down into the front pocket of his bag and pulled out his glock which held a full magazine of wooden with silver core bullets. He held it low at his side as he pushed the door open, prepared for whatever might be inside.
Well, not anything.
âNik?â he asked, his blue-green eyes positively lighting up as they landed on the blonde who stood in his doorway. He dropped his bag to the floor and placed his pistol on the table near the door before clearing the space between them and wrapping his arms around her.
His head dropped into the curve of her neck and he lifted her off the ground, spinning around before placing her back on her feet. He kept his head where it was, as if it belonged there (and as if it werenât totally weird to be holding someone - who was supposed to be just a friend - like a lover you hadnât seen in months), before sighing, âOh man, I missed you Nik.â
Skype calls were definitely not enough, even if they did happen every day.
She had been ready to pretend to be mad at him, ready to yell at him for being gone so long, ready to give him a really hard time before eventually caving in and welcoming him back home. But as he approached her with that big stupid grin of his and wrapped her up in one of his classic hugs... there was no way she was keeping up that facade any longer.Â
As he lifted her off the ground and spun them around, a light, airy laugh escaped her lips. âYou didnât think I was going to let you mosey back into town after being gone for so long without any sort of scolding, did you?â she teased as he set her back down.
Hugging him tightly, she breathed in his familiar scent and soaked up the heat that always seemed to radiate from his presence. She wasnât sure what it was, she knew it wasnât because he was a werewolf, but for some reason, Zaire just seemed to run a couple degrees hotter than most people. It wasnât very noticeable, but whenever he came back from a hunt, it was like he brought with him this warmth and familiarity that Nikki hadnât even known sheâd been missing while he was away.
She took in one last deep breath of him and then pulled back a bit to look up at him. âIâm glad youâre home.â she said before disentangling herself from his arms and pulling him over to the couch. âLook! I even had dinner waiting for you!â she exclaimed, referring to the take out that would probably need to microwaved again.

Welcome Home | Zaire & Nikki
There were few people Nikki could say she missed when they were away. Obviously, there was Abel, after all the kid was practically her nephew or something, and if she was truly pressed, she supposed she could admit that if Jace were gone longer than his usual stint in jail, sheâd notice the lack of his presence. And of course, there was Joss too. But there were few people who she had known for as long or been as close to as the Kennedy boys. She had literally known them her entire life and while it was hard, knowing her father had chosen them over his own daughter, to pass on the family âjob,â she really considered them some of her closest friends.Â
Well, mostly Zaire.
He was her best friend by far and though there was still a pang of jealousy and even hurt whenever he and Aiden left on their hunts, Nikki had to admit he was definitely one of those people she found herself missing when he was gone for long.Â
And as he and Aiden had been gone on their most recent hunt for quite some time now, Nikki was definitely excited that today was the day they were returning. So much so, that at around noon she headed over to Zaireâs apartment to wait for him. Breaking into (although at this point it couldnât really be considered breaking in anymore considering how many times sheâd done it before) the shabby apartment, Nikki walked straight over to his fridge, pulled out the last remaining beer and plopped down on his couch, making herself comfortable as she settled down to wait for him to get there.Â
She only had to wait a couple hours (try 6), but by the time she heard the familiar sound of his car pulling up in front of the building, sheâd ordered Chinese take out and had watched far too many WWE matches. She may or may not have already started eating when he pulled up, but hey, at least he would have some ~relatively warm food waiting for him when he got home.Â
Rising to her feet, she moved to stand in the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest and a stern look on her face, waiting for him to arrive.Â
