I find it a bit strange how quick people are to make sure they emphasise how BADASS Jehan is the minute they describe him as being anything other than a pinnacle of modern standards of hyper masculinity.

Jehan was intrepid, of course, but he wasn’t a jackass. You don’t have to make him out to be violent to justify his sweetness, like some kind of wolf in sheep’s clothing. He was gentle, kind and shy. That’s okay! Even if he wasn’t brave, it’d still be okay. Being a bashful poet is not something that should be treated as shameful. Niceness is not a weakness.

It’s the same thing with modern AU Jehans wearing traditionally feminine clothing or accessories. Like, if you want Jehan to wear lipstick for example, he doesn’t have to be an icon for weaponised femininity in order to do it. Jehan can just wear lipstick because he likes to without being ready to threaten anyone who so much as looks at him funny. He doesn’t have to make Montparnasse shit his Armanis in fear to be valuable and worthy of respect.

What about a Jehan who is very sensitive to what bigoted jerks say about him, to the point it makes him weep, but he shows his intrepidness by still having the bravery to go out and do his thing, regardless?

Angry buttkicker Jehan is cool and I’m not suggesting that people should give up on that characterisation or anything, but it’d be nice to see a Jehan who’s presented as gentle without compensation.
