i couldn't really give less of a shit about northern honor (i think grrm complicates that aspect of them with every book) but goddd the discourse about ned being honorable only because of jon arryn is so annyoing

there's a number of things going on here, one of which is a conflation of honor with being a good person - which are not the same thing. Honor is just an adherence to a code of conduct. Ned happens to be both honorable and good, but what he isn't, is chivalrous. He is very explicitly not a knight, he doesn't act like a knight or talk like one - which is interesting bcs isn't that what Jon Arryn would've taught him if he was really indoctrinating Ned into the civilized southern ways? Robert is chivalrous, at least when he's young - that's why he spares Barristan at the Trident.

But Ned isn't.

In fact he is less chivalrous than his siblings raised in the North - Brandon acts very much like a knight when he repeatedly spares Littlefinger's life and then later when he rides to king's landing to challenge Rhaegar to a duel for Lyanna. Lyanna literally adopts a persona of a knight, acts chivalrously and honorably by defending Howland's honor. Was Jon Arryn sneaking into Winterfell to teach them that?

I love when Arya is in the tunnels, hearing two man talking about his father having a bastard and the book; she immideatly thinks of Jon. Like yes baby, they are definitly talking about your big brother who has not even important (at the time) and no one cares about. Her first thoughts going to Jon is so important and cute to me.

I've been seeing a ton of Game of Thrones content lately and I watched an edit of Ned and Jon and one of the comments on it was about how some people believe Ned didn't love Jon as much as his real children and I first completely disagree but also it got me thinking about how different Ned's feelings about Jon probably actually are to his real children. I don't think he loves anyone more than another but he probably feels a very different connection to Jon. 1.) he traveled for probably months with a newborn Jon 2.) him and Jon have this huge secret that granted only he knows about but he knows if it gets out the two of them are dead. He probably hopes he's saved his wife and kids by not ever telling Catelyn but he knows it would be over for Jon and I think having that anvil over their head (even with Jon not knowing about) would just make his connection to Jon that much deeper.
