The verses that you just read are the continuation of the lyrics to the song “Beds are Burning” by the Australian band Midnight Oil. They were created by all the three elements in our group as a task for an English class. To be able to fully perceive the meaning of the song the three of us analyzed it and together brainstormed. We came to the agreement that we would be mostly addressing climate change and its effects on the world that we live in and the human inaction regarding it. After that, we all took part in the composition of the lyrics and made the necessary changes in order for everything to rhyme. Now we will proceed to the explanation of the lyrics, which will be done two by two. The first two verses are about the lack of empathy and remorse that the humankind is currently showing towards the environment and its inhabitants. Following that, we refer the inevitability of the consequences of our actions. The fifth and the sixth verses are an allusion to the extinction of various species. Besides that, we also use the expression “suffocate” as an analogy to the serious coal problem in Australia that is leading to the emission of high levels of CO2 gas. The last two verses are pretty straightforward and we believe that all of you can figure out the meaning of them. Next on we will proceed to talk about the most “technical” aspects of our task. Basically, we called each other through Skype and together we searched the web to find something in the theme of the song that would catch our eye. We decided that we wanted mostly to refer environmental problems in Australia and we couldn’t be more surprised by the immensity of them. It truly broke our hearth to see such a paradise of wild life being completely torn apart by our greed and thirst for money and power. We just hope that all of the future generations don’t fall on the same traps as we did and please try to keep the world a beautiful place. -A. Weird -Jojo -Tired
