“You sure you have to go, Pads?” James asked, lingering in front of the door as if he could physically block Sirius from leaving. “You know you’re always welcome to stay the night.”

“I know,” Sirius said, reaching for his cloak. “But there’s stuff to do—someone’s got to keep the family fed, pick up nappies for Harry, all that thrilling domestic life.”

“But you’ll be over for Halloween, right?” Lily asked, stepping into the foyer. “So we can celebrate properly. As a family.”

“Of course I will,” Sirius said without hesitation. “I wouldn’t miss a holiday for anything—you know that.”

He reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind Lily’s ear, then pulled her into a gentle hug.

“Be safe, please,” she whispered. “It’s only a week until Halloween.”

“I always take care of myself, Lily. You know that.”

He kissed her softly goodbye before turning to James, who was still rooted to the doorway, worry etched across his face.

“You don’t have any regrets, do you, mate?” Sirius asked, studying him closely.

“Of course not. It’s the right plan. You’re right—a double bluff makes us safer.” James exhaled and added, “And I trust Wormtail.”

“So do I,” Sirius said firmly. “So wipe those worry lines off your forehead.”

He leaned in and kissed James, slow and steady, until James finally softened under the touch, the first time all evening.

“It’ll be fine, Prongs,” Sirius said with a small smile. “I’ll be back for Halloween. There’ll be pumpkins and everything.”

“Yeah,” James murmured. “See you soon.”

And with one last, sweet kiss in the doorway, one that Sirius soaked in hoping it would be enough to last the week until he saw Lily and James again, Sirius stepped out into the night.

it's always interesting reading older prongsfoot fics because sirius is taller than james in most of them, my brain genuinely malfunctions but it's fun!!

imagine being a 11 y/o boy who’s never felt an ounce of affection in your entire life only to suddenly meet another boy your age named james who treats you with unfathomable amount of love from the moment you meet. like. sirius black went from emotional starvation to being absolutely smothered in love and loyalty and warmth and i think that had to be both a beautiful and surreal experience for him.
