There’s a reason why there are a total of 61 cards in the main deck. And I’m sure that at first glance, one would already know.
Because DRAW CARDS mechanic, son!
This deck runs ten cards that lets you draw 2-3 cards in a turn. That’s a whole lot of card advantage right there and it’ll be impossible for the pilot not to be able to Jeskai Ascendancy on curve or with dispel in hand to counter those counters and enchantment hates. And the wincon of this deck is still the tokens, but now, with the release of Battle for Zendikar, the Jeskai Ascendancy now has a back up plan in the form Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper.
No tokens available anymore? Fine, hit them with a 3/3 mystic monastery which has the potential to grow into a huge creature with all the one mana spells available in the deck.
Then with the addition of the new dual lands in the BFZ set, one can easily splash a fourth or fifth color in their decks. With the splash of black included in this deck, Crackling Doom, Murderous Cut and Tasigur are now accessible!
You always want to have a least one Bloodstained MIre in your opening hand along with either a Tormenting Voice or a Magmatic Insight. This lets you get rid of the unwanted cards such as those turn five cards and replace them with a few possible good ones. This way the deck gets more thinned out and the possibility of achieving the combo and going off becomes so much easier.
A good starting hand would consist of the following:
It may not look like much but with the help of Magmatic Insight and Anticipate, those goblin tokens, should they resolve and get to attack, could easily hit the opponent for 12 or even 15 on turn five. And in addition, all those draw discard cards are really good fuel for your treasure cruise. Treasure cruising has never ever felt so good this way before. Imagine casting three treasure cruises in one turn. Talk about disrespecting those die hard control players!
Sideboarding can be a bit difficult because the massive board-wipe in Radiant Flames can and will affect your tokens without the Ascendancy in play. However if one chooses to go to the control route, they can probably board in an Ugin and a Sarkhan and just go to a really grindy game. There are probably more good sideboard cards than this but it all depends on your local shop’s meta.
PLAY THIS DECK. IT DOESN’T COST MUCH, BUT WHEN YOU GET TO PILOT IT TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL, EVERYONE WILL CRY.
