For context:

The violinist is Alexander Rybak, a Belorussian violinist whose family defected from the USSR to Norway. One of the songs he’s mashing up is his own “Fairytale”, Norway’s entry that won the 2009 Eurovision.

The other song, which is the one playing on the amp, is “Stefania” by the Kalush Orchestra, Ukraine’s entry that won the 2022 Eurovision. The song is about the writer’s own mother, and also about mothers who protect their children from war. Once Russia invaded, the song became a war anthem.

So this isn’t just a gorgeous piece of music. It’s a political piece about unity between people who have been oppressed by the same empire.

The purpose of child hero stories is not “this universe is abusive toward children and no one has child age labor laws” it is that they are stories written for children so that they can see themselves overcoming challenges and defeating monsters.

And this is for the same reasons that more stories where the hero is between 20 and 35 years old without looking like either an Olympic athlete nor a special case are needed, because I am a normal looking person who is still kind of a child inside and I need to keep dreaming and be motivated. You could argue with “Yeah but you shouldn’t need motivation anymore” Well screw you, the world is hard and is only getting harder. Let me believe it is not too late to be accepted into some kind of Hogwarts or something. Reminder that Frodo and Bilbo were 50 years old when they got their adventures.

no I read something about this recently! 

it is a combination of: 

projectionists used to well trained union workers now they are mostly some guy who works in the cinema and hits play without adjusting any levels

boom operators aren’t allowed to get in as close as they used to and miking performers well isn’t routinely done

 directors don’t appreciate setting up and getting good sound on the day sound on the day assuming everything can be fixed in post (it can’t)

sound operators who say ‘hey actually we need one more take of that for sound’ are routinely ignored

tight turnaround and schedules means that the noisier equipment (generators etc) is set up closer and closer to where they’re filming so mixers have to try hide the sound of noisy diesel engines etc that the mics are picking up

a mumble style of delivery is increasingly popular among actors who want to appear naturalistic on screen

film and television is very much considered a visual medium so directors are trained to think of visuals first when filming and sound last
