So far, not much.

It’s day 3 of Pyweek20 and I have :

a partial idea of the end UI

a partial idea of what the game is going to feel like

a map on paper

an almost map.py to deal with the map in game

a highscores display that displays nothing :D

You can now lose the game and retry. To lose, just press the DO NOT PRESS button. I mean, it’s not like it’s written in red and caps. Must be fun to press it.

It’s Pyweek 20 !

Dammit, I’m not gonna have much time to work on Dragon Defense for now, but I entered this contest to try and get more experience with Python and Pygame.

This week’s theme is “Data, data, data”, and I decided to make a topdown 2D game where you play a little robot who needs to find more data to save his fellow human crew members aboard the ship he is in. It will feature a little highscore list, and a race against the clock, plus, possibly terrible art.

For now, there’s only a menu, though. And it doesn’t do anything yet. Soon it will do more !

Much annoyment today. First of all, I was silly. Spent half the day angry because my sprite didn’t show up properly (transparency wasn’t respected at all and left a DARK SPOT instead of the background around the dragon’s wings.

Otherwise, I worked with some functions to translate coordinates from the map to coordinates on the display. Also some refactoring of code because, hellooo, messy code.

Messy doesn’t even cover it.

I’ve also been working on game mechanics, mostly on paper.

Please disregard the amazing “i’m so terrible at drawing” art, and be amazed (or not) at this amazing (maybe I use amazing too much) display of a map who was previously only numbers on a text file. I’m planning on having the map displayed on the left of the screen and since enemies will be walking down the path, I had to have a few functions that are not showing up there because they’re invisible to the player’s eyes, such as path building and so on. It took a few attempts to get the map displaying right.

(as in “i’m a silly bear who asks the computer to do only half the stuff and then wonder why it’s not doing the other half”) : remember this about computers : They do EXACTLY what you ask them. Even if sometimes you think you asked something else, they are just doing that.

So for this project of game I have started to expand my Python knowledge and my ability to do mischief as a computer grizzly, I started with the pygame library (http://www.pygame.org/) and I did this amazing menu with amazing graphics [actually, the first version of the button was ugly, and this is the first draft of the real graphics my brother is doing for this project, which will probably post most of his art on his deviantart page, http://leie.deviantart.com).

I have a lot of things written down on paper (I might do computer stuff, but I also love paper to plan out stuff), but most of the game’s system and organization isn’t written down completely, so I cannot really say anything yet, I’m working on making it display stuff properly first.
