“twenty-five.”

“is one-fourth of a hundred,” he immediately replies, looking up from the video of his last match against the adlers. the slightest smirk on his face challenges you to go on. you play this game every year: he pretends not to know (or care) that he has a birthday at all, and you have to remind him that despite what the tabloids say, he is, in fact, an aging human like everyone else.

grinning, you plop down beside him on the sofa and are immediately pulled closer to his side. “it’s your birthday, doofus.”

“really?” sakusa’s brows raise in mock surprise. “i had no idea.”

“shut up,” you laugh, giving him a light shove. naturally, he doesn’t budge – but a short and quiet laugh leaves his lips. “anyway, it’s time to pick your yearly instagram tribute.” the album, appropriately titled “omi :)” opens on your phone, revealing photo after photo of sakusa’s pearly whites (on a hiking trail on mount fuji, in a hotel room in paris, in the kitchen baking brownies…).

he sighs but the skin by his eyes crease ever-so-slightly. “can’t you pick for me?” though he’s never been a fan of having his face shown back to him, sakusa’s gotten used to the fact that when you want something, you usually get it.

(and that, maybe, he is kind of good-looking.)

“what if you don’t like that photo?”

“i don’t care.”

you study him skeptically. “i don’t believe you. sakusa kiyoomi? mister ‘can-you-make-that-black-and-white’? mister ‘no-face-pics-on-instagram’? mister –”

he laughs and covers your mouth with his hand. “baby, if you keep calling me ‘mister’ i might start thinking you have some secrets to disclose.” the grin on his face doesn’t disappear even when you pry his long fingers off your face.

“i have nothing to say except that you need to choose a picture for your birthday post… or else i’ll have the team decide for you at dinner later.”

it’s not that the rest of the msby black jackals are out to embarrass him every chance they get (though that may be the case for a certain blond setter) – it’s just that they all, with the exception of his captain, have a terrible eye for aesthetics. hinata still uses instagram filters, for god’s sake. grimacing, sakusa shifts so that the two of you can comfortably look through the album together.

none of the photos pique his interest. not even the one where he’s two thousand feet above the ground in a hot air balloon, which you were almost certain he’d pick. sure, he looks good enough in most of them, but something’s missing.

noticing the tension on his face, you give your boyfriend a soft nudge. “what’s up?”

“i don’t like any of these,” he admits, running a hand through his curly hair.

“wait, am i overstepping? i’m sorry, babe, i thought you –”

“no, of course not,” sakusa interrupts. “i really don’t mind. never did. i’m… thinking.” the living room is silent as he thinks and you watch his expression for any clues to his thoughts. none of them reveal themselves. suddenly, he sits up and unlocks his phone, opening up his camera roll.

and in his ‘favorites’ album, he finds what he’s looking for.

it’s a picture of him smiling. it’s not the best quality and he’s certain it’s a screenshot from a video that one of his teammates took months ago, but this one’s special. it’s not just of him – it’s of you, too. you’re on a yacht in the mediterranean, kissing his unmasked cheek as the sun sets behind you and he’s grinning so widely that he’s almost unrecognizable.

“this one,“ sakusa says firmly. he looks over at you and chuckles. god, look what you’ve done to him. he’s a mess. a smiling mess. “post this one.”

Sakusa hates that he’s roommates with you. 

College was already hard enough as is, but living with you made his life even more of a hell. He was reluctant at first, but seeing you pester him about it for weeks on end made him give in. 

Oh, how he hates agreeing to you. You weren’t messy, per se. You were just clumsy. And loud, obnoxious, and you stayed up late at night with loud music blasting through those godforsaken speakers.

Kiyoomi never thought that he’d be living with someone who had come to terms with his hygiene, but somehow had still found a way to annoy the crap out of him. 

You had so many annoying habits that he despised. You’d wake up early in the morning, and the bathroom you shared would be misty when he went to brush his teeth. You’d leave for your lectures after making toast and scrambled eggs, but the crumbs would be left all over the counter. When you’d come back, you wouldn’t bother keeping your backpack in your room(it would just be sitting on the coffee table, and Sakusa would put it in your room for you). 

For you, however, living with Sakusa Kiyoomi(also known as 'Omi-chan’ or 'Omi-Omi’ by you) was heaven on Earth. He was clean, organized, and he wasn’t like your previous roommate. He didn’t poke his nose into your business when you came home late and did his part of the chores without question. You had to practically beg him into letting him live with you. Your previous roommate was messy and was practically an alcoholic. Sakusa had only one condition—he wanted you to be clean and organized. And you immediately agreed. 

This morning was the same; somehow you had managed to wake up after sleeping only two hours ago. As if you were working in tandem, you got out of the shower as Sakusa began brushing his teeth. 

“Your breakfast is on the table!” you yelled out before you opened the front door, “I’m leaving now, Omi-Omi!”

“Come back alive and don’t call me that!” you hear, just before closing the door. A small smile played on your lips as you boarded the bus which took you to your university campus. 

The day was long for you. More assignments tended to pile up, and you were exhausted from staring at your laptop for too long without having a clue of what to type for your essay. 

When you got home, you didn’t expect Sakusa to be in the kitchen, cooking ramen as he looked to the door and greeted you, “Glad to see you’re not dead.”

“Shut up,” you mutter, throwing your backpack by the sofa as you faceplant onto the pillows. Groaning, you get up. You hear a small laugh from the kitchen that causes you to raise your eyebrows in irritation. 

“Hey, why do you get an off-day anyway?” you offendedly glare at the man who hands you a bowl of ramen before sitting down next to you. He shakes his head with that everlasting smile on his face, saying, “Because I’m an athlete and I need rest. And you, need to start putting your bag in your room or I’ll hate you even more.”

“You suck,” you roll your eyes, slurping on your noodles as you frown at him once more. His giggles were filled with nothing but the most innocent kind of mischief, his face was relaxed and was free of stress. There was unrestrained mirth evident on his features as he kissed the top of your head and replied, “You know you love me.”

“Unfortunately,” you break out a smile, and somehow, the stress was gone.  

And just by looking at your childish smile, Sakusa knew that he didn't actually hate living with you. He secretly loved that you depended on him; the way you’d plop down face first onto the couch after a long day, your bag was long forgotten on the floor or on the table. 

Because as much as Sakusa Kiyoomi wanted to deny it, he loved you. And he hoped that you loved him just as much as well.

hmm 1) After graduating college, from 2014-2017, I changed/had 4 different jobs before settling into my current one.  2) One of those jobs was teaching dance classes at preschools around the island!  3) I was my husband’s date to his high school prom, but we weren’t dating, in fact we hardly knew each other.  Our mutual friend groups went together, and the match-ups were based on height so that the shortest boy was paired with the shortest girl and so on.

it hurts.

it hurts when you see him, smiling with another, it hurts when he’s hugging them tight and all you can do is smile politely and say your goodbyes. it hurts so much.

you never expected him to do this. and it didn't seem like he knows what he’s doing. you asked him to not be so touchy with his friend, yet all tooru says is; what do you mean?

it’s as if he saw you as crazy, for thinking such things. you're his and he’s yours, right? that’s all you need to know, and it’s enough for you to trust him about this. yet you can't.

you can’t because he’s not just friends with them, and it’s obvious. it’s all in the way he smiles when he’s with them, how he holds their hand but barely does the same with you. people would call this cheating, but you love tooru too much to admit this.

“hey, y/n.” tooru mumbled, eyes glued to his phone as he dropped his gym bag by the door. “you done with dinner? i’m starving.”

“yeah,” you replied, slightly irritated at how he’s greeting you. before he met them, he’d call you cute pet names like baby, bunny, and so on. after tooru befriended them, you’re in the first name zone. and it annoys you. you can’t be stripped away of your own boyfriend, by some person he met at a volleyball game.

“are you not going to eat with me?” tooru questioned, his eyes still scanning his screen, and his face decorating with a smile once in a while.

“no. you’re busy anyway.”

“of course i am, y/n, i’m a working man.”

“since when is cheating a job? do they pay you?” you laughed. “they probably do pay you with texts that make you smile more than i do.”

“what the fuck are you talking about?” tooru’s hearing was hazy, as he spent all this time texting the person back, and he barely heard what you said. “of course they pay me, i’m a volleyball player.”

“mhm,” you scoffed, crossing your arms on your chest and leaning against the counter, in front of him. “of course they pay you.” you mumbled, rolling your eyes before finally getting the courage to hurt yourself by looking up at him.

he was blushing.

he never blushed. not with you, at least. and it hurt you.

the next few days you spent at iwaizumi’s place. you didn't tell him why you came there, as you didn't want to spark up any unnecessary drama amongst the two friends.

“you okay? where’s ‘kawa?” hajime asked, placing a cup of tea on the coffee table, across from where you’re sitting. “did anything happen between you two?”

you hated how observant hajime is. he knows when somethings wrong and he's not one to jump to conclusions, but when he connects the dots, correct conclusions is all he has.

“no,” you lied. “we’re okay. he’s busy and i wanted to give him space, i hope you don’t mind.”

“i don’t mind. i’m glad you came to me.” hajime sighed. “but if he hurts you, let me know so i can beat his ass.”

you laughed, trying to hide the fact that you’d want to do the same.

“i’ll tell you,” you smiled, taking a sip of the tea.

a string of messages flooded your phone as you walked back to the apartment you and tooru shared.

tooru: where are you

tooru: i came home and you’re not here

tooru: i’m hungry, make me dinner.

you rolled your eyes, typing back a reply and stuffing your phone back into the pocket of your coat.

you: make it yourself. you have hands.

tooru: but it only tastes good when you make it 🥺

you: too bad.

you got home and saw tooru sitting on the couch, eating something that looked like a bagel, although too burnt to identify as one.

“hey,” you mumbled, closing the door. “enjoying your food?”

“why are you like this?” tooru asked, looking at you with an agitated look.

“like what?” you played dumb.

“so annoying,” he retorted, turning back to the tv.

“mind elaborating on that? i don’t understand.”

“of course you don't, you’re dumb too.” he mumbled, hoping you didn't hear, but you did, and this is where your fight or flight instincts had an argument.

a part of you wanted to shout at him with all the things he did wrong, and the other one wanted to just pack your bags and leave for good.

“why are you just standing there? say something.”

“what do you want me to say? i’m dumb too.” you rolled your eyes, taking off your coat. tooru stood up, as if he read your mind, and stood in your way.

“you’re not texting your side chick?” you asked, pretending to look for something in your bag. tooru’s face showed dissatisfaction, how did you figure him out?

“you thought i wouldn't figure it out?” you laughed at his face, seeing how he was speechless. “you’re so obvious, tooru.”

“i’m not texting anyone, baby, i promise.” he tried to play the innocent card, but as soon as he said so, a noise interrupted your argument.

you and tooru both turned towards the coffee table, and as if you two read each others minds, you started running towards it.

you got there first, and the name on the screen made your heart ache. “my baby”

a contact name he once used for you.

a contact name you wished to keep for yourself.

“tooru,” you started, holding back tears. “what is this?” your voice was calm, yet a tone of disappointment could be heard. you turned the phone towards him, and when he saw the contact name, his eyes widened.

“i can- i can explain.”

“explain what?” you threw the phone onto the couch out of anger, hot tears staining your face. “explain how i’m not good enough for you anymore, so you go and find someone else to call baby?!”

tooru just stood there. he opened his mouth, yet closed it almost immediately, trying to think of a coherent sentence. “i.. i don’t know.”

tooru actually didn’t know. he didn’t know what made him do such things. his mother always taught him not to hurt the person you love. but what should you do when you love two people? he doesn't want to hurt you, neither does he want to hurt them… tooru is lost.

“listen,” tooru started. “you don’t deserve this. i’m sorry. you don't deserve this, and neither do i deserve you, and i understand if you leave but please.. give me a second chance. i’ll block them, i’ll tell them we're over..”

“tooru..” you sighed, head in your hands as you sat on the couch. “i’m sorry, but i can’t do this.. how am i supposed to trust you when you did something like this?”

“you’re not.. but that’s why i’m asking for a second chance.” he sat down beside you, placing a hand on your back. he soon leaned closer to you, embracing you in a warm hug.

“i’ll give you a second chance.”

tooru’s face lit up, and he was about to kiss you, but you continued speaking.

“as friends.”

shatter.

you think you heard his heart shatter as those words left your mouth.

but what could you do?

he gained your trust and threw it out.

it’s the only right thing to do, for the both of you.
