November 30th | Song of the Day | "Concrete Jungle"
Artist: The Specials Album: Specials (1979)
One of the first big albums of the second wave, Specials would become an icon of 2 Tone and a definitive moment in ska history. It featured original songs as well as covers of some Jamaican songs, like Toots & The Maytals’ “Monkey Man” and “Too Hot” by Prince Buster. The Specials took the laid-back sound of the first wave and retooled it for their own demographic by picking up the tempo, adding fuller, harsher percussion and larger horn sections, and making the guitar a primary instrument instead of keeping it in the background. This angrier sound resonated with the rebellious, violent youth of the United Kingdom in the late 70s and early 80s, cementing The Specials as a big name of the second wave and clearing a path for several other bands to follow. “Concrete Jungle” was written by their guitarist, Roddy Radiation, about his experiences growing up in a Coventry coal mining village and living in Hillsfields, where he became a part of the punk culture, making him a target for street thugs and skinheads. The song also makes reference to the National Front, a far-right racial nationalist party that saw its power peak in the mid to late 70s. The National Front was responsible for a large riot between black and white youths in August 1977, when they marched through a largely non-white neighborhood declaring racially charged crime statistics.
I have to carry a knife Because there’s people threatening my life. I can’t dress just the way I want, I’m being chased by the National Front.

Straight outta Santa Clarita California comes one of the most amazingly fun bands ive ever seen live. Pangea construct their songs in interesting ways, folding elements of doo-wop, girl groups, power pop, and even folk-rock into their sound, thereby sidestepping the homogeneity that plagues many a punk record. It gets pretty epic at times, but Pangea stay steady on course by keeping the focus where it belongs: on good songs, well played, with heart. Really, the only thing more fun than Jelly Jam is Pangea’s live show. Mosh till you D-D-DROP!!
