1,134 workers died on April 14, 2013 at Rana Plaza. They made clothing for companies including Canadian company Loblaws. This hammer and sickle was erected at the site in memory of the victims. Bangladeshi law & Loblaws’ own supplier code of conduct violations were identified prior to the collapse, but Loblaws took no steps to ensure compliance. Responding to a lawsuit filed by surviving victims of the collapse, “Loblaws argued that it had no obligation to take steps to protect the workers, let alone to check if the buildings where its products are made are likely to fall down. Loblaws argued that while it was entitled to monitor supplier factories, it had no obligation to do so.”
