“Understanding the Relevance of Information Literacy in the Midst of Social Era”
Living in an ever-changing world, globalization was bound to take place. It is for this reason that humans are curious and innovative in nature, resulting in countless groundbreaking discoveries. Along with it came the rise of technology and social media - quickly heralding the acceleration of the "Information Age" of which we are existing today. Back then, conventional media was the source of information from all parts of the world. These are the radio, the newspapers, and television that are powered by technology to generate maximum turnout. However, the hypersonic infiltration of the internet and its growing trend eventually declined the conventional media. Since then, the mass media has become the society's norm. But why is it important to understand the relevance of information literacy in the midst of the social era? Well to start, it is because of the information disorder.
As we progressed and evolved every day, social media amplified itself. Now, people see this platform as a place to connect with other people and share their opinions freely. In turn, this generates a lot of pros and cons. It gives us freedom to speak, but it also requires a responsibility that no one seemed to care about. Misinformations, online bullying, and so many things continue to pollute the once harmless environment. It is important to understand the relevance of information literacy to do damage control, to have the ability to be a better social media user. It helps you to use technology to effectively find and manage information, making it credible and updated. Through this, the information you provide can leave an impact on the lives of many people around the globe - positively, for once.
“Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship”
The Media and the Government. These two are the most paramount institutions in the world. Both of these foundations are constructed for us, for the people. They have the abilities to twist our minds and to deviate us from our very own principles. It's as if their word is our law, and rightfully so. Thus, the relationship between the media and the government has a profound impact in our society. They are both interdependent with one another. A community without press is impossible to inhabit. Governments rely on the media to maintain a regulatory power. And well, one can not deny that the latter has the higher form of authority. Therefore all these years, their bond has been shaky and discordant. Hence, the term called "the love-hate relationship" comes in. A constant tug-of-war between two preeminent institute.
Undoubtedly, both have functions in our society. But these days, especially amidst this pandemic, the media and the government have been trying to find a middle ground. The government does its own thing and the media, per usual, reaches out to the public. Now this may seem stipendiary for both sides, but on multiple occasions, it can be veritably ruinous. You see, the media regularly puts the government under perusal from the public which creates tension. In turn, the latter enforces its authority, damaging the freedom of press. However, as the elections are approaching, it seems they have no choice but to "love each other" again - as they gain their own benefits out of this substantial event. Ostensibly, this cycle will remain unceasing. An endless back-and-forth shoving, and the citizens will remain manipulated and unknowing.
“The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual”
The world is changing rapidly. The times evolve - emerging a new age of knowledge. In a fast-paced world, technology rises in parallel to the media. Information is easier to obtain. The Internet becomes the primary catalyst of change. Life has suddenly gyrated to social media. It has grown into a large platform intended for sharing, learning, interacting, and marketing (SLIM). With the surging numbers of internet users each day, there it comes with a reasonable price: responsibility. A price rarely seem being payed, and everyday is a different loss at stake. Misinformations, fake news, hate speech, and cyberbullyings. Also people tend to forget that not everything online is what it seems. This is why it is vital to take accountability of our every click of that post button. So what is the value of being a media and information literate individual especially amidst a pandemic?
Being an MIL person is an act of initiative. An initiative for transition. You have to engage in a digital world with a set of skills to master. One needs to be unbiased - a trait not easily learned. It challenges the way you critically think and percieve matters. In these dark times, don't believe everything you read. Choose to engage on topics that are worth your time, especially those that affect you directly. Master the ability to locate and evaluate information. Access. Organize. Analyze. Be smarter. Through all of these, it promotes a better use of social media. You have to ask the right questions. Dispute every stigma. Think outside the box, and broaden your perspective. This pandemic has taken so much already - never let social media take one more. Make this environment better. Be a catalyst of change.
