When we first met I found the best thing about Group D was our ability to get along. We were immediately able to produce our first film, Chestnut the Horse rather easily. We all knew from the get go that we wanted to do something funny rather than serious which is where the idea came from.
For our final film we decided to take our very first film, Chestnut the Horse and remake it into something new and completely better. We took the criticism that we received all the way back in the first week and very meticulously planned the next version of Chestnut. We met up beforehand and created a detailed sheet of information of everything that we would need, a storyboard, and a script.
The biggest thing we had to improve on was the actual chase scene itself, and since I was one of the main cinematographers on this project I was determined to break the chase scene up by getting as many shots as we possibly could. Originally we left the chase scene as three long shots just showing the two main characters bouncing along, tripping, throwing things at eachother, etc. We did have a lot of the same action occurring we decided that for the remake we would hire out a dolly. The dolly was a fantastic tool for us to have because it gave us a much wider range of shots that we could actually do instead of us being limited to pans, cut aways, etc. It was perfect for the chase scene because of all the movement that was occurring in the scene opening us up to trying even a moving master shot.
This was my first time working with the dolly and I ended up finding it extremely enjoyable.
I found that the colors of the corridor we filmed in worked beautifully on camera and added a whole new level to the images that were produced. I’m very proud of the shots we managed to capture and how the film came together in the end through all of our efforts.
I want to go into cinematography later in life so overall I found this an extremely beneficial experience. Working in the different positions in the group, such as director, editor, sound, and even actor I found enjoyable and informative.
The main thing about making these ‘Chestnut’ films is that as a group we had fun making them, and it’s easy to recognize that when you see the film itself.
Overall as a module while it seems intimidating it ends up being a lot of fun to do. Because of the time constraints each week for making a film as well it forced us to improve our skills in time management and teamwork.
