my grandma fled to Montreal eventually when the bombs dropped on Warsaw train station when she was 12 (her birthday was in August 1927), right at the very beginning of WW2. she attended high school in Montreal, my dad told me ‘Baron Byng’. Pet peeve common misconception: "Racism is (built on) a mental shortcut"
It's not -- it is a complex of systems that were deliberately crafted, are highly complex, illogical, incongruent and ADD cognitive load.
Racism is hard. It wastes our mental energy and vitality and stifles our flexibility. Overcoming it is also hard initially but it sets free a bunch of mental capacities and gives clarity that allows for easier and faster decision making.
I know this both from theory and my own experience. I am so much more grounded and in tune with my environment, people around me, my memories/past experiences AND have more accurate and simpler mental models. I do this by connecting to my authentic self and the authentic selves of others -- thus treating BIPOP people as people instead of whatever bullshit racism had taught me to do.
Acting from our authentic selves is the ULTIMATE shortcut compared to the mental gymnastics inherent in racism! Because it bypasses the entire, convoluted, bloated and mostly subconscious complex of mechanisms that turn cognitive dissonance ("that's a human but I'm supposed to treat them as not human") into consonance ("I no longer feel the unease or confusion this would naturally bring about").
Instead of perpetually making ourselves unaware of the unease or confusion, we eliminate the cause of it.
