Re: The Dan Avidan Situation
I've been following this situation over the last few days as it's changed from grooming allegations to false accusations. Overall? I'm just glad that no minor was actually hurt in this situation.
As far as I can tell, this is what occured:
A 17 year old fangirl either met Dan at a con or contacted him on Facebook.
"I love your show!" "Thank you for being a fan!" type of brief interaction followed.
Contact stopped after that.
In 2017, the fan is now 22 and reaches out via a different form of contact. They begin to flirt, a one night stand occurs, he ghosts her.
So overall, no minors were harmed. No grooming took place. Having sex with a longterm fan and ghosting? Irresponsible, sleazy and just downright unkind. However, this isn't why I'm making this post.
I'm making this post because the way fans tried to initially defend Dan when they didn't know the full story by saying that "she was only 17 and 11 months, nearly 18 anyway" when flirting began, is really worrying. No, if that was the case this would go from a sleazy situation to an illegal and dangerous one. It's really upsetting some people were willing to throw a supposed victim (as we initially believed) under the bus just to protect a youtuber. I saw one post saying how most men would have slept with her the minute she turned 18 so the fact he waited til she was 22 meant he was a great guy. Again, that is incredibly worrying. We know now that nothing illegal occurred, but we initially didn't. I really hope some people in this community think about how their response to this could be harmful.
I would rather support a supposed victim and be proven wrong than support a supposed predator and be proven wrong.
