Well thank you! I'm glad I can contribute something. The book I was reading referred to crocodilians in general, so I'm assuming it was non-specific about species. I'll have to see if there have been any recent articles about that whole thing.

Yes. Crocodilia is the order, and alligators are in the family Alligatoridae. Their genus is Alligator so an American alligator would be Alligator mississippiensis.
