âYou ran all the way here from the bunks?â She frowned, feeling once again like she was just his little sister. He never took her seriously. Shouldnât he be focused on the people he was meant to lead? Not running after her like she was still a child. She stood as Ophelia entered. She had yet to meet her, but knew generally that she was a model and therefore in the same sphere in many ways.Â
âCade!â She said, when her brother was blatantly rude to the woman. She immediately closed the space betweeen her and Ophelia. âAre you alright? Please let us walk you home!âÂ
Ophelia had no idea how to react to the beautiful young princess who was open and sweet where her brother was closed. She looked at Cadfael instead, âYou didnât tell her about me?â She raised an eyebrow.Â
Rhianon perked up immediately, âTell me what?âÂ
Opheliaâs lips twitched as she tried not to smile, she could say a lot of things but went with, âIâm the bad guy, I believe. Iâm technically the daughter of the Horned king. Donât worry too much, weâre not in contact.â
Rhianon, surprisingly turned to Cade, âAre you really hung up on something as stupid as that? Did she actually do anything to hurt you?âÂ
âI did,â he confirmed, missing the fact that she seemed displeased by that. If the other guards had failed so much of their training that he could not trust them to themselves in times of need, he would rather they all choose a different path in life.
The raise of a brow was all he gave when she scolded him and he shook his head at the idea of her needing protection. âShe needs no help from us,â he spoke, stepping in front of his sister when Opheliaâs eyes wandered for a brief moment.
âDo not act as if that is a minor detail,â he spoke in a commanding tone, genuinely frustrated with his sisterâs willingness to look past such evil. At times, he could admit that her soft heart was a strength but not when it came to this. âHer father nearly destroyed Llyr and imprisoned our mother. She may not have committed the crime but she was raised by that man for a period of time and left to fend for herself on an Isle of villains. Nobody escapes that without the capacity for evil,â he reminded.
Ophelia may not have hurt him directly, yet, but he saw how easily she manipulated others with sweet words and her looks. A snake would always be a snake no matter how many times it shed its scales and that was why Cadfael still refused to trust her.
