OKAY IM TALKING ABOUT MY LOTF OC!!
UM KINDA OF A SUMMARY OF HER I GUESS IDK
Alice is a thin British girl with an “angelic” face that symbolizes emotional openness, civilization, and compassion. She is apart of Ralph’s tribe and helps along side him for the fight of civilization or savagery.
Like the other boys, Alice was a survivor of the plane crash. Although she wasn’t supposed to be on the plane due to it strictly being for the school boys. Her mother snuck her on due to her status of a flight attendant and the pilot being good friends with her mother.
(NOTE: Alice’s mother was not on the plane as a flight attendant. This was a last minute decision she gave to the pilot to protect her daughter from the war.)
On the island the conch sounds and the children come towards the sound littluns, the choir, and Alice being last. Her presence alone makes tension with an in between curiosity. She’s taboo, but a feminine figure. This makes her vulnerable. It paints a target on her back that she’ll later become hyper aware of.
Her role was simply a mother figure (for the littluns) It was the 50s and a lot of young girls had set gender roles taught to them even when they were so young. So it would make sense for her to get a role aligned with these gender roles. It’s also likely this is all the boys know about girls, from learning from what they know from their own mothers. Fragile, nurturing, caring, etc. of course, these things necessarily bad but they can be twisted into harmful stereotypes. (Well come back to that soon!)
Personality- Alice has a weird personality that clashes with itself. On one side she is quite selfish. She makes solutions to problems that specifically made to benefit her needs rather than the group. Unlike Piggy, who thinks for the whole group with thought out solutions. Alice does not, she frantically looks for a creative solution that fits her needs and goes with it. Basically going for a “good enough” approach. Although her selfish nature has made trouble. She doesn’t do it out of hate or jealousy. Her selfishness comes from fear and anxiety. She fears what will happen when/if her backbone gets stripped away from her. She’s aware she is vulnerable, a target, overlooked, and not looked at past gender.
On the other side Alice can also be very empathetic. Although her empathy is quite selective, she shows very strong emotional bonds for a select few. She can be soft-hearted and has a strong urge to be helpful even to those she dislikes but as stated before she is afraid of losing her resources, backbone, or even her heart not letting her walk away. Which typically is why she keeps to the select few she is soft and vulnerable towards.
A lot of her selective empathy comes from her street smarts and observation. Reading things like body language, facial expressions, or even tone of voice to help her anticipate others and her new toxic environment. Of course, this skill is not mastered (She’s 12 💀) and this is only a skill she learned to cope with the anxiety surrounding her worry about the other boys and their true intentions.
Relationships- Alice has different relationships with each of the main boys some more complex than others. Her strongest relationship being with Ralph. Who she sides with throughout her time on the island. Ralph didn’t see much of past her gender and the gender roles he put on her. Although he does develop your typical “school boy” crush on Alice but only for shallow reasons from her looks (he’s a pre-pubescent boy and this felt typical for Ralph, in the beginning at least 💔) although these feelings feel one-sided as Alice never makes it clear she returns them. She does admire his leadership and finds him quite charming. Although Ralph has forced gender roles on her from the lack of knowledge he knows from women and it being the 50s. He still treats her decently with a little more thought and finds her less embarrassing to be around than Piggy because of Alice being a bit more reliable. He still thinks that she is weak, fragile, and generally below him. Although Ralph does make a promise to protect her along with a hibiscus flower he shyly gives her to both prove to himself and her he’ll be a good chief and to symbolize a fragile but yet “pretty”relationship between the two. This promise was originally half a joke to make Ralph seem more charming(Ralph still thought ts was a game 💀) but later this promise comes back to bite both of them. Later in the novel they build a strong and emotional intense bond for each other. Showing that this could be past a crush and even any romantic aspect for that matter. As Alice becomes one of the few pieces left that Ralph can still connect to civilization and keeping him tied to it. Alice then plays more of emotional anchor for Ralph keeping him tied to his civilization and giving him slight hope for survival. Alice also feels she has a bigger heart towards Ralph and shows less selfish tendencies. Honestly, I could talk about their relationship for awhile as I’m still working on it but moving on!
On the other tribe, (haha get it) she shares a mutual hatred for Jack. She finds him repulsive and believes he brings out the worst in everyone, even her, through savagery and violence. She fears him the most out of all the boys. Claiming he’s gluttonous and is never satisfied. Jack despises Alice as well, typically making sexist comments about her based off her worth as a girl or just her gender in general causing more problems and bickering which could’ve cased Jack to want more vengeance when he split tribes. (This one is kinda short I’m still working on it!)
Okay being honest I haven’t gotten a chance to write about Simon and Piggy much so like bare with me 🥲 (also I’m getting tired of writing)
To put it simple, Alice enjoys Simon for company due to him also being an outsider, Although she never really understands him or what he means when he preaches about the beast she doesn’t tear him down for it. She finds his views of the island very peaceful and more fragile than what the others think helping her finally have a drop of relatability in someone.
As for Piggy, well Alice thought he was obnoxious most times. She didn’t have as close as a relationship with Piggy as Ralph had so she struggled to understand his strict nature and honesty found what he said repetitive even though he had good intentions.
OKAY THATS ALL I FEEL LIKE WRITING OMG..
So I’m very curious to see what you guys think about her I’ve put a pretty good amount of thought into her so I would love to know what you think of her so far! (She’s not finished💔) Or any ideas, if you think I mischaracterized a character, constructive criticism, or just genuine compliments!!
Also anytime I write about Alice I get reminded of those little precious moments figures.
