“No one could have known--” she’s told herself that enough times to almost believe it and stop beating herself up over it. Then a wince, followed by a glare.

A rough laugh, painful in her chest. “You haven’t changed a bit, have you?” she questions, shaking her head. “I tried to defend that becoming Strike-Commander didn’t change you... but you’ve turned less kind with it then, and even more so now” she says. She was his second in command, it was her job to call him out on shit like this.

“It does matter... perhaps not to you, Jack, but to me it does.” she says, shifting her weight some and pulling her rifle closer to her now to keep her grounded.

the two of them — seated and waiting for any sign of movement. him, antsy. never one for sitting around and doing nothing, more charge and give them hell, especially these days. the moment wouldn’t allow for it, this was a job to gather intel rather than get their hands bloodied. he wasn’t even allowed his rifle, for subtlety sake. the pistol against his hip felt puny in comparison.

finally a breath spilled from him. the words come as a regret, but he can’t fight back against the way they tumble clumsily out of his mouth, ❝ it’s not the same without him, is it. ❞

She sets her scope down and sits up instead to look back at him. A sad smile riddles her features painfully. “It isn’t... but he chose, Jack” Ana forces the words out. She still had hope, she had to. Perhaps a Talon trick, or even that he was brainwashed. “I cannot believe that he was responsible for the Swiss Headquarters accident” she admits lamely, arching her back so it would pop and she leans against the wall now.
