It's funny, this is supposed to be an art account but my son has kinda taken over before I could hype myself into putting my art here lmaoo. Can't complain tho, everyone is so nice and I get to see the cute chaos gremlins of others!!
So, my young son decided to throw a tantrum out of the blue and won't do anything other than thump. Hid in his sleeping quarters after causing a mess in his cage he cause? A bite of cucumber when he was expecting a sweet treat, I think? Well, the result..Guess what I'm doing now?? Using lettuce to pet him. It's more like I'm gently smacking him in the face with a torn leaf tbh(I was worried he'd be worked up enough to nip, I'd already started ripping his lettuce into little bits before the freak out). Anyways it's 20 to 3 and I haven't slept yet. Just up, smacking my rabbit in the face with lettuce so he'll calm down. He just lets it happen, no grunting, no thumbing nothing. Just accepting his fate until I stop, then he remembers he is mad lmaoo
People with rabbits as pets, I have a question: how do you keep your little bastards from ripping up your carpet?? I previously didn't have carpet, just made sure my floor area had blankets and stuff for his little paws w a walk way for me to the door so he could roam. Now I've moved to a place where the floors are carpeted and I'm losing my mind with him. I got him a blanket with a plastic under it for his cage area to avoid any big messes (he likes to tip his water and stuff, still can't get him to stop that even with a heavier bowl) but when I let him out to roam he IMMEDIATELY goes to ripping up my fucking carpet and I'm at my wit's end here.
I tried doing things like redirectiong his attention with toys, scattering his greens so he'll be more inclined to eat proper food rather than the carpet and making my displeasure known by thumping at him, shaking my keys or calling out at him firmly but he's only really deterred by the sound of my keys. They spook him into running back to his burrow like I'm bullying him tho and it makes me sad bc he'll be binkying and racing around happily until then. Nothing on google works and I honestly didn't think this was going to be a problem before this. He's even taken to ripping up his blanket in the cage and trying to destroy the plastic underneath, something he had never done before. I thought it was stress at first but I realized he gets mad at me when I remove the plastic so idk!! This is so out of nowhere and yes, he is (as previously described) a bastard but he never gives me this much trouble for anything other than destroying my last pair of inside shoes (which I learned to put out of his reach and then outside the room entirely, rip)
He has toys, mutliple types of fruit tree branches, timothy hay chew ball, a paper towel roll I supervise his play with, soft minnie mouse toy he's had since we first got him etc. I'm lost on why he's so fixated on the carpet!! I'm sorry for the rant but I'm losing my marbles over here!!!
Snickers used to be a major carpet chewer, though now he doesn't do it much. I definitely think his age is starting to catch up because all he wants to do is lay behind the couch when he's out of his kennel.
That being said, when he was more active and chewing, I ended up getting a dig box for him. He loved it. It was the only toy he'd ever really play with. I've also started leaving my door open to my room so he can access his kennel easier. Usually he'd chew and dig on the carpet because he had to go pee (but he's smart enough to know he'll get in trouble for peeing on the carpet), and the litterbox solution we had for the living room was a cheap throw pillow that got tore up in the wash after years of use. Now he knows he can just go to his litterbox and come back out whenever he wants, considering the only time I leave his kennel shut is when I'm at work or asleep.
And here's some snickers tax!
for houdini, he wouldn't stop chewing on the baseboards and even just wall corners, but we got a cardboard cat scratcher thing, like this:
and put it under a chair leg so he can get good resistance when he pulls and bites it, and he's completely stopped with the walls and stuff (probably because drywall tastes worse than cardboard....). bunnies really very much like pulling and yanking so anything that redirects that urge will probably be good though :)
First, can I just say Houdini is a HILARIOUS name for a bun. A chaotic magic man! Second, I do have some boxes for him to do that very thing with, I did get an earlier suggestion of getting him one of these but that's not in the cards for me rn. I DO have an abundance of spare cardboard tho so one was cut out and filled w little treats and extra things to simulate foraging by suggestion of another bun parent and he seems to really like it tho, I've now got the him throwing things out in annoyance if the search takes too long for specific favorites lol! My boy also had a brief bit of being too interested in the walls as well but that was a surprisingly easy fix as I just put things up against walls anytime he messed w them and he's actually taken the hint and leaves them be even if uncovered^^

Almost forgot, this is a picture of the culprit. He was trying to play innocent seconds after I scolded him for plucking and CHEWING THE DAMN CARPET!! SERIOUSLY MAN WHAT IS THE FIXATION?!?! LET IT GO
I'd recommend maybe putting up a barrier around the carpeted space. My bunny liked to chew and dig in the carpet too when we still had it. Also I've noticed that these lil guys like to dig and chew. Like a lot. So, and maybe you don't have a yard space, BUT, if you have an outdoors area, I kid you not, take your bunny for a walk.
I got a mini dog harness for mine and a long dog leash. I also have a dog lead that I hook his leash up too and stay outside with him until we're ready to go back inside.
Just a tip, if you're gonna try to put him on a harness, practice inside first, then make sure THAT THE HARNESS IS ON TIGHT. If it is not tight, they WILL SLIP AWAY. That's why you should start inside first.
But the reason why I recommend this is that your bunny will have the chance to dig and pull at roots and dirt that they usually wouldn't and won't shred your house instead.

My god, what a CUTIE!!! Like a little dumpling, oh my goodness!!! Thank you for blessing me w pictures, felt my heart actually squeeze. Anyways, the carpeted area is the entire room, it's why I put down the blanket and under plastic for his little living section which is surrounded by like bars? Idk what to call it, those cage things that are like an over glorified metal partition? Hmm. I'll add a picture of what I'm talking abt.
You can see it open in the background of him playing w a papertowel roll. (I made his carrier his sleeping spot so he won't run at the sight of it come vet time, I am a genius. (Also he tore the open bed I got him to shreds which admittedly I should have seen coming but wte lesson learned, this one has blankets inside and one designated to covering it so he'll have dark for travel))
I actually took him to parks often before moving but it's winter rn and the weather isn't ideal for taking him anywhere. Not to mention he rather chew his harness than wear it. I've taken to hauling his entire gate/cage thing with me whenever we go on our outings bc he refuses to be dressed and I can't fight him every time yk? The park that was closest was this odd hill thing w the only trees being pine so it was all kinds of head ache trying to get a shady spot that he wouldn't eat pine cones or needles under, at one point I took to bringing a beach umbrella! We now have a little space that he could run around in in warmer weather but for now I've been entertaining him indoors.
This is from the very first time I took him out I believe. I hadn't realized how unprepared I was until I sat down w all my stuff as a makeshift barrier and it literally hit me that night how irresponsible it was and how lucky I am he isn't a runner like my childhood bunny was (he liked dashing short distances just to give us a scare before coming back (p sure he thought it was hilarious, he did it every time and kinda sulked when we didn't jump in shock after the millionth time) but our yard wasn't a wide open park so it was safer yk?). I surprisingly don't have any more recent pics of our excursions but you can see what I mean about the openness and lack of trees+shade. Gotta scout the new area for spring and stuff, maybe I can retry him w the harness until then. I want to see him wearing it and comfy like your little one, too cute (bonus, it'll save my back from having to carry him AND his heavy ass set up!)
