Legendary Animator Hirotoshi Sano Honored With Major Career Retrospective in Japan
In the pantheon of Japanese animation, there are those who draw movement, and then there is Hirotoshi Sano—a man who draws weight. To watch a Sano-directed sequence is to feel the groan of hydraulic fluid, the scorching heat of a thruster, and the violent friction of metal against metal. Starting June 27th, the Tagawa Art Museum in Fukuoka serves as a cathedral to this mechanical gospel, hosting a definitive retrospective of Sano’s storied career. For the uninitiated, Sano’s signature is etched into the very DNA of the “Real Robot” subgenre. His work on Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memoryredefined how audiences perceived the scale of a mobile suit; it wasn’t just a toy, it was a multi-ton weapon of war. But Sano’s genius wasn’t confined to the battlefield. As the Mechanical Animation Director for Cowboy Bebop, he infused the Swordfish II with a personality that rivaled its pilot, Spike Spiegel. He understood that in the vacuum of space, the machine is the only thing keeping the soul intact. The exhibition at Tagawa Art Museum offers a rare, tactile glimpse into the analog era of greatness. Visitors will navigate a curated labyrinth of original key frames, character designs, and mechanical layouts that bridge the gap between high art and technical blueprinting. From the ethereal, dragon-inspired mechanics of The Vision of Escaflowne to the gritty, lived-in realism of City Hunter, the collection highlights a versatility that few contemporary animators can mirror. This isn’t merely a nostalgic look at the past; it is a masterclass in draftsmanship. In an age of digital perfection, Sano’s lines carry the “shokunin” spirit—the artisan’s soul. Each stroke tells the story of a time when every spark and every piston was rendered by hand, resulting in a cinematic texture that modern CGI often struggles to replicate. For the collector and the cinephile, this exhibition is a pilgrimage to the heart of the machine.
Hold on I need to bully my son
Alex Dino: no I am not the famous war criminal hero whose father was the former head of ZAFT. What is a Jachin Due. Why is this silver-haired man I have definitely never met before trying to ragebait me.
*10 minutes later*
Takes off sunglasses: it is I, Athrun Zala, former ZAFT elite pilot who may or may not have defected at the end of the war for reasons unknown to even myself. Yes I will be joining the war again. Yes I will be returning to ZAFT. Yes I will probably defect to the other side again it's whatever.
Yeah that's right I like Destiny. No shame here! It's fun, the mech designs are great, Yzak and Dearka are there. I like the new characters and Meer Campbell is my favorite Gundam girl. The first half was good in its way and if the second half hadn't dropped the ball Haros, it'd be regarded better.
...
I apparently have no gifs on this computer and the gif function was remarkably unhelpful, so have this Bad Photoshop of Coppy wearing Alex Dino's sunglasses instead.
My time has come
Look at this beautiful boy who definitely does not have anger issues
He thinks this is a good disguise. This is the equivalent of Clark Kent with glasses vs Superman. It's like putting on a mustache and changing literally nothing else about your appearance. Great job buddy that's the worst anyone has ever done it (affectionately)
Best slap fight of the century
Meer Campbell the woman you are
(I cheated on those last few)

The 50th anni pv made me so emotional

Imagine creating a whole lock screen of your favorite SEED character and his wife for your work phone…
Couldn’t be me…
Okay it is me
Now is the time. If you are succumbing to existential, ecological, and political despair, watch G Gundam.
This is the funniest promotional art Bandai Namco has done yet for a Gundam Popup.
I drew Heero way back when but now here’s a full suite. He doesn’t fit anymore so maybe I’ll redraw that sometime idk .
I think a lot of the explanations/ guides on how to get into Gundam look too complex for potential newcomers so I put this together to send to anyone I see curious about the franchise in the future:
gundam crossovers are the best oml
