The Patio
I spent some time with my friends- family- this evening. We went to the bar; one of the scary ones that has a twin on the edge of every small town. Where the carpets (which have been stained in some areas beyond recognition) peel up at every doorway and roll in every walkway, and you trip every time you walk through: "I promise I'm not that drunk!" Where the mid-90s dance floor is cracked beyond recognition. Where the DJ, surveying the aforementioned dance floor, fills the room with country music or thickly laced rap- there is no in between, aside from the required line dance which I firmly believe are scheduled to play at least every half hour.
We made our way to the wood paneled bar and ordered our drinks. While we sipped on new brews, the stream of cigarette smoke from the outdoor patio pulled us from the barstools we had crammed around. Almost cartoonishly, we arose and followed the wafts of sacred Toby to the promised land.
After a few drinks, some stolen kisses, some vomit (unrelated to the kisses,) and far, far too many cigarettes, the patio metamorphosed. We found ourselves surrounded by people- people who would not be caught dead in a room together. Caught dead in a room was one thing, but the patio is nonjudgemental- indiscriminatory. We were a breakfast club platter of individuals: An oiler, a philosopher, a spaniard, a queer, a mother, an app-developer...
Countless thoughts passed between our lips, between the cigarettes and burnt nicotine vapes. It will always amaze me how humans crave connection. Whether it's a lonely philosopher, taking a break from his poultry farm; an app-developer, who cancelled a weekend in Switzerland because his hiking plans fell through; an oiler who used to be addicted to opiates, but finally kicked the habit... Somewhere, there is a patch of grass that we call common ground, and that somewhere for us that night was the patio.
They say that drunk words are sober thoughts- and after getting to know some folks I would not have otherwise spoken to, I think we should all speak a bit more drunkenly, no matter how sober we are. Sometimes our best moments are when we give ourselves the grace of releasing inhibition- toss back your liquid courage, your liquid luck, and go ahead and speak.
I have never felt closer to god than when I found Her in my friends.

Might fuck around and spend my time dreaming about fictional characters who knows
Reading is not enough, I need to go for a brunch with my comfort characters.
