devouts for the holy orderㅤㅤㅤㅤft. myth gang .
caution: 16+ reccomended, contains religion, slight suggestiveness (not really), slight ooc.
a/n: self-indulgent au, a bit of a vent/coping mechanism, but i honestly just wanted to take a crack at characterizing the gang. this is a motm au,,
unironically one of the more “devout” ones out of everyone. naturally, he always grew well aware of the severity of faith and the holy church himself since he was raised by sisters all his life (against his better judgement.)
although his blood and species is considered otherworldy by most patrons of the church, he is still loyal to the flock nonetheless. family is family after all, and he doesn't have any other to run to even if he did feel strongly about the church one day. in result, he's quite the spectacle amongst older nuns (male and female) and is considered the lords gift of humility to the church's orphanage and order, in a weird way.
still a big charmer amongst the nuns, and especially towards the bar maidens in the tavern he sneaks off to every once in awhile during mass gatherings he couldn't be bothered to attend on some days. although he's devouted to the religion, that doesnt stop him from frequently humoring his own mischievous tendencies and running off with a sister (or brother) somewhere on holy grounds to do god knows what. and it should probably stay that way too.
still affected by the blot disease, only his sickness is slightly more cautioned for as to not scare off any other members of the church or visitors coming by every sunday. a lot more self conscious about his appearance when he is going through an episode, truly just afraid of being percieved as a devil to be disposed of by the churchs’ executioners immediatley if showing signs of any sort of hostility, which is why he's a lot more laid back and cooperative in general.
actually has a bit of elegance over his ink abilities, and uses it as a healing property for others however his healing properties also affect a bit of his strength because it exerts just as much exhaustion out of him as his own disease does, so he's very nitpicky about who he does heal and who he continuously heals before. if he deny's a heal to your wounds, it's no hard feelings really. he just has to put himself first. you'll be fine.
not necessarily a scholar, but pretty handy for the church's needs mechanically along side his healing ability he just rarely uses enough. he's not someone you should go to first for some advice, but he definitely is the third .. the second being his brother.
just as devout as his brother, for he too was raised along side nuns with bendy. although, he is a bit more intense in his own beliefs, surpassing religion as a whole given his black and white worldview. he may dislike the searchers and other ichor-corrupted creatures that lurk beyond the gates of the holy grounds, he indefinitely draws the line at any offense towards his brother.
what makes boris a particular child of the church is, he doesn't necessarily believe in the celestials, at least not in a way where he's constantly at the foot of every holy statue praising them for glory and virtue. he does believe there's something beyond that not even his mind could comprehend, but it's hard to keep up that belief at times. nonetheless, he still contributes to the church just as much as shelly and bendy, because it doesn't take religion to be a good person.
very overprotective of bendy still, and is extremely annoyed by bendy's tendencies to leave rooms completely to avoid everyone seeing him melt into a puddle due to the blot. of course he could never understand the importance of keeping up an image by avoiding everyone seeing him go into a rather messy and inky coughing fit, and he agrees on that 100%. he just cares about seeing his brother safe and protected by whatever celestial light might be up there to help his soul, along with his own.
can get quite lazy at times, sneaking out of mass to go hang out in a corridor in silence or to the tavern along with bendy. it's no hard feelings towards any other members or even the father himself, he just finds standing and kneeling for hours at a time for a good portion of his mornings a bit outrageous. that doesn't mean he's rebellious, he's just very tired in the mornings.
mostly found in the church's kitchen helping out, handling the orphans, or lousing around the main foyer with bendy and shelly. he isn't as busy as the rest, and hes extremely okay with that, insists he couldn't even begin to imagine the amount of work the ammonite and demon go through for the church while he just spends his days cooking or with children, and he finds that pleasant enough for a wolf like him.
despite her loyalty for working for the church, even going far as to becoming a newer executioner herself, she's greatly well versed and intricate on her studies of science and the logical development of toon-kind and the world around them. though, she is one of the many few who believe both coexisted at the same time, which is what keeps her going for the church's well-being and for her own.
the most enthusiastic and curious girl the church has ever met, in all the good and wrong ways. finds herself questioning the morality of the holy bible and its practices a lot, not out of venom or spite, she's just a generally interested person and finds bible study as just regular studying. that being said, she's the brightest nun of her age because of her passion for things religious or not, spending her days in her dorm room observing blueprints for medicine, celestial weaponry, and artifacts/fossils from around the world.
when she isn't busy looming over her desk with her worn quill in hand, she sometimes tends to help boris with the children, taking most of load of his hands since between him and her she's exceptionally better with children than him. if not reading stories of ancient myths and fairytales, she accompanies bendy or mugman around the church, even nagging them enough to follow her into picking out ripe fruits for the church's kitchen.
finds herself getting reluctantly dragged to taverns or the town in general with bendy and boris, although she worries about the church's rules and the punishment for disobeying them, she still follows anyway to enjoy their company. actually ends up being on par with bendy when it comes to drink for some odd reason, could actually outdrink maybe most of the gang if she wanted to.
actually ends up being quite the role model for the children because of her determination for knowledge and devotion to the church, she's a balance of both that either person can tolerate enough for her to continue staying. shelly tends to let it get to her head a bit by completey nagging the boys, specifically cuphead, to at least try to seem devoted and loyal to the church in front of the children. of course most of them heed her advice since she is by far the smartest out of the five of them, but she does find herself pulling cuphead by his handle to leave taverns/casinos and force him into confession duty out of punishment.
works alongside the cup brothers as a newer searcher/demon executioner. shocks many when she mentions her being chosen to eventually be front lined with cuphead and mugman since she's always seemed like brains than rather brawns, but don't underestimate that curiosity for weakness, she's actually on par with not only bendys tolerance but cupheads strength just a bit. she's a hard pillar to bring down, and safe to say a good chunk of the church would probably crumble without her.
not even he knows why he was able to stay in the church as a brother, but he could safely bet that its a matter of his celestial magic along with his brothers magic that makes him eye-catching to the holy order. his devotion is pure, but he himself isn't. he finds himself spending most of his days lounging around corners of the church he shouldn't be in, drinking so much his own uniform smells like scotch, or playing to much poker for his own good. it's at this point that he's recognized as quite the rebel in general, but still partakes heavily in protecting the church and it's people from searchers nonetheless.
cuphead does not just recognize the celestials, he fears them. he fears the idea of hellfire and despite his frequent sinning he still hopes he can make it all up somebow with his job as an executioner, he figures thats gotta count for something when he finally gets to the pearly gates.
became an executioner (collector if you will) the second the church recognized his celestial magic, and he was honored by the church with mugman because of it, even gaining the nicknames "Porcelain Saints" from his countless triumphs over devils. takes advantage of the dependency the church has on him and bends it to his will which is why he gets away with most of the trouble making and unnecessary bloodshed he creates with searchers. on the topic of such, he has no mercy for any creature formed against the holy order. a job is a job, and he never gives that up for his own empathy, it's not like he has any for hellspawn anyway.
almost never partakes in mass service or his confessional duties, and when he does, he honorably half-asses it in hopes to free himself quickly from the shackles of constant chants of the bibles words and haphazardly reassuring devastated patrons of their sins.
“Not a sin Brother Dyle, just very weird and slightly lustful for any church.”
was actually a bit skeptical of bendy when he first met him, even going as far as to asking higher ups if they're just keeping him here to kill later on, but after learning he was actually quite the saint he storaged the idea of hanging him by his legs on sight and instead nags him more than ever to get a very unvirtuous reaction out of him in hopes to get him into trouble. it never works however, because bendy grew to become great at masking his anger enough to not be seen as an absolute threat.
actually respects boris and shelly a lot since they are willing to give him what for for using his status as a respected executioner to his own benefits. he found it quite annoying with shelly especially at first, but soon realized her boldness and strive for what should be done through and through would make her a great offense in the executioner field, so he recommended her and ultimately snagged her a spot in the trainee position. she still has a bit of trouble talking to him, for he is quite the intimidating man.
formed a gambling addiction out of boredom for this same old holy and loyal lifestyle, he knew he couldnt just spend his days saying grace and killing searchers, so he put more of his explosive personality towards something a lot more chaotic. albeit he already had issues making wagers and bets in the house of god, but there comes a time when a man just wants to leave the church for a day and gamble until he feels like some kind of winner again. though, later on his gambles began to reflect his person and his need to feel near-death. he couldn't die even if he wanted to, so he was fairly okay with offering up his own eyes or head against another poor gambler who had no intention of risking their life or watching another man shatter his own head for the fun of it whatsoever. mugman tells him off about his suicidal-like gambles and that one day lady luck won't be so nice with him, but in regular cuphead fashion, he shrugs it off and rolls the dice.
a man devoted to the executioner life style, but absolutely despises the celestials themselves. he would never say it himself, but he considers whatever might be up above very sadistic for watching him suffer and struggle with the burden of magic given to him and completely abandoning him after wards, he especially holds a grudge against a certain chalice. nontheless makes protecting the people of the church and his friends his top priority.
on the topic of grudges, he's quite the hothead contrary to popular belief, and that affects his attitude towards some people like bendy, although he tries to work on that. he's especially unapproachable during mornings, having to wake up early and patrol for awhile since he still is one of the any defenses for the church besides being an executioner. the only two who can approach him are shelly and cuphead, like cuphead he respects her boldness and gives her that respect she deserves.
nags the other four to stop wandering off during church services and stay like the responsible adults they are. actually the only one out of all of them who almost never skips out on church no matter how much cuphead personally brags about his outings to make him feel like he's missing out, that doesn't affect him however.
unlike his brother, he actually feels a bit of a guilty conscience when killing off devils or searchers. far apart from cupheads perception, he actually recognises these things, these things considered hellspawn, used to be like any other person in the church, only consumed by their stronger emotions and turned into the monster they are now. sometimes after his missions, he prays silently, giving them grace and eternal peace for their resting. they had names too, it's the least he could do.
sometimes along journeys with shelly to find more for her collection of historical artifacts or blueprints in general. he finds her study admirable and a good example of determination, which is why he second his brothers word for adding her onto the team of executioners.
horrible with children, he isn't exactly rude, just scolds them enough for their own safety and to lessen his worries about them somehow getting hurt trying to act like high level executioners themselves. his empathy also denies the churchs requests for him to train newly appointed executioners and keep them as apprentices, not to be a jerk, but because he wouldn't like to see anyone get awfully hurt under his cautious watch some how, he recognizes the dangers of what lurks beyond, and he'll bet himself that with any more pressure on his psyche as a mentor and a professional executioner might turn him into a devil himself.
