Happy 10th to “OTHER PEOPLE’S HEARTACHE”.
I have a deep love for Miles Morales and his rise to fame. Miles is definitely the most relatable modern-day ...
The sad part is that Marvel has scaled back on Anya’s character and story over the years. Anya’s powers (like her exoskeleton and camouflage) were taken away, only to later be replaced with traditional Spider-powers. The Spider Society and Sisterhood of the Wasp are used as minor details in other stories. Even the transition from Araña to Spider-Girl has made her solo stories more in line with Spider-Man, putting her against foes like Kingpin, Hobgoblin, the Kravinoffs, etc. She’s essentially run into the same problem Miles has.
This here what upset me because she was such a unique character with a unique background who already had her own bad guys and did the totem thing better than Spider-Man. She had her own thing going on. Yet writers still decided to make her more like a traditional spider character which didn’t really help her at all.
But I think the thing I really hate the most is that they killed Miguel and her dad Gilberto Corazon.
Coming out of my Tumblr Hibernation just to comment on Anya stuff - something I’ve never talked about on my Tumblr. But I love her, so... sorry my 1 active follower. I will preface this with: I know popularity of a character, sales of their comics and books are what dictate how much Marvel does anything with them... but... Anya gets so shafted by Marvel. Her original run was painful, sure. The art style was bad and the tone was all over the place, and her initial costume shouldn’t have been what it was until she got Julia Carpenter’s hand-me-down costume (as much as I love that suit). But she was such an interesting new character and she only got more interesting. Until they kind of threw her to the side. Ripping her exoskeleton off in Civil war was a tragedy for the character; I think it was to make her more marketable but she became kind of generic. Just another of the billions of spider-characters. Marvel still did her dirtier than that at every opportunity. The only time Anya really got to shine was in a what if where Peter Parker kills Kraven. A non-canon side thing. It’s so frustrating.
They make a big deal Madame Web (Cassandra, the original, during the Kraven event) - “Not even [Peter] was chosen by the web, he fell in by accident. She was”. Is that not a massive deal? She gets set up as potentially the most important spider. It’s huge! Then they don’t really do much with her.
We have spider-verse and she can read some scrolls. Hurray. But ultimately she never really felt that important. Then after that with Web Warriors we have a scene where the other spider-girls pretty much talk shit saying “she’s too intense”. Sick, thanks for dismissing her. Later during Spider-Geddon they pretty much give Spiderling Anya’s schtick immediately demoting her again to just some girl with spider powers. They lampshade “I’m not a Parker”, and it pretty much sums up my feeling about how they sideline her. Its like every opportunity she gets absolutely screwed. Every time I re-read her catalogue or browse through, it feels like they gave her like really minor bits in the main Spider-man runs. Yet Silk, for example, got a massive spotlight on her which launched her popularity. (I will stop my Silk slander because maybe she’s a fine character I just hate how she was brought in, and begrudge her relative popularity)
And an unrelated complaint is she was created 7 years before Miles, 10 before Cindy. She and Miguel always seem to get ignored whenever POC Spiders are brought up. It’s frustrating.
I will never not be passionately upset I don’t have hundreds more comics with Anya headlining. I think she’s fantastic. They set her up then dropped her saying “I don’t want to play with you anymore” so often.
Unironically if I ever get published I’m worming my way into Marvel to give her another chance. It’s my #2 writing goal.
I will be removing myself from situations
If something is happening, well, I certainly don't want anything to do with that

How it feels as the DM when the players pass by plot points/loot they wanted to expand on:
Also goes for secret routes
If you dont want your players to miss something, give them little breadcrumb-like clues or pieces of information to intrigue them through rolls or in addition to other things they naturally find or sought out.
If it’s a secret passageway, for example, and they roll to find traps, on a successful roll you could say “you are able to easily discover the pressure plate, as well as a suspicious draft coming from what appears to just be a wall” or on a bad roll “you can’t tell if there are any traps, but while looking, you did feel a draft coming from what just looks like a wall”
An item? When they look at it, describe it as looking out of place, having an odd aura, or something like “when you see it, you feel it call to you, and you can tell its beneficial but cant quite place why”
An NPC? Same rough idea. Describe them as just barely sticking out or mysteriously seeming worth investigating.
Drop them breadcrumbs, DMs.
In addition, I know it's meant to be secret but put something mildly amiss in your description of the room or what have you. Think of 'The Chair'; in a room where everything has been ransacked and destroyed there is one intact chair sitting at the centre. Players laser-focus on that one out of place thing. If there's a secret passage just offhandedly mention there's a gap in the moss, there's a section of the floor with no dust compared to the rest. Just one small contrast tangentially related to the thing you hope is found without giving everything away. Sometimes when you try to make it a 'secret' you make it TOO secret.
Fucking dropped him…
