hi i had a late night beverage and ended up having a Fun Introspection i feel pretty comfortable sharing
i grew up in a region that was predominantly white. i grew up isolated from my heritage similar to how my mom grew up. it was like being islands, it was very lonely
it wasnt until i was a lot older like my early teenage years that i was finally able to meet other people of color, and have gaming friends who are like me. a lot of my friends share a common interest that for them, the reason they play human characters in fantasy games is to be able to be themselves and have that sort of tangible representation they could see. they could be black, asian, latino, whoever they were
until that point in my lifeā¦. that thought had never actually clicked for me before. my isolation created a different solution to the same problem my friends face. i related to nonhumans and they were what i saw myself in because there was literally nothing else for me for so very long in my life. whites treat native americans like these mystical creatures and well, tiny baby vinny internalized that and saw themself in mystical creatures too
so the wholeĀ āFantasy Humans Are Boringā thing is likeā¦. relatable for me. but its relatable in a way that is very different from the white gamers who surround me then and now. fantasy humans are boring for me because, they are so often only white. and i just cannot see myself in them.
but also, being a person of color who still holds nonhuman creatures dear to myself, i want to stress the understanding that you can be interested in fantasy creatures and races without throwing people of color under the bus when we want to see humans who look like us. just like whites have humans who look like them too. theres a lot of complicated work that comes with this of course, but let us at least start somewhere before you just write us off as boring
