"Diogène", peint en 1882 par l'artiste britannique John William Waterhouse.

L'œuvre représente le philosophe cynique grec Diogène de Sinope installé dans un pithos, la grande jarre en terre cuite qui lui servait de logement à Athènes. À ses côtés figurent ses attributs traditionnels : des oignons, un rouleau de texte et une lanterne. Cette dernière fait référence à l'anecdote selon laquelle il parcourait la ville en plein jour à la recherche d'un homme authentique.

La composition repose sur la confrontation visuelle entre le philosophe, volontairement marginal et vêtu de guenilles, et un groupe de jeunes femmes vêtues de drapés colorés qui descendent un escalier de marbre. Cette mise en scène illustre l'opposition entre le détachement matériel prôné par le cynisme et les conventions esthétiques et sociales de la cité antique.

Thomas Stuart Smith painted this striking portrait to celebrate the abolition of slavery in both the UK and the US. The man portrayed is enjoying a pipe at his leisure, symbolizing his freedom from enforced labor. Behind him, a yellow notice announcing a slave auction has been partially covered up by a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation.
