Spoilers to The Umbrella Academy.

I kinda felt awfully bad when Reginald began his command to Luther as ‘as my No.1’. That ‘MY’ doesn’t sound like the usual ‘my boy’ thing which normal parents would say at all! I felt it like that Reggie considers Luther not as his son, nor as a human being with his own personality, but as a property that works as he wishes; like a vehicle or a vacuum cleaner. As people use those machines in need of the certain functions they own, Reggie would use Luther when he wants something’s to be done.

So when Luther exceedingly succeed in what he was told to do, well, at best that’s just what he was supposed to do, and if he couldn’t reach the expectation, Reggie would have treated him just like the way people treat a vacuum cleaner that doesn’t suck up dust so well. That would have made Luther to try as hard as he can to not let his father down.

Constantly believing that there must be a significant meaning for dad sending him to the moon comes with the same context, I believe. We don’t JUST switch on the washing machine. When we start the car, that is because we have some place to drive to. Likewise, Luther would have thought that there must be a reason for him to have to go to the moon for his dad.

However, Reggie couldn’t care lesser with the documents Luther had sent over the years, and by finding it out, the whole ‘his functions’ on the moon thing Luther had been believing for all those years just collapsed. Luther didn’t listen to people saying ‘Reginald sent you to the moon because he couldn’t stand the sight of you anymore’ because he had the belief that his dad is not that kind of person(well, which later turns out to be literally wrong). But now there is no reason left to him other than that.

A broken machine’s to be dumped. I guess the shock Luther felt then must be somewhat like that. Especially him being broken like that is the result of his failure on the given mission by his dad. Imagine the self-hatred he would have felt when he realised that disfigured body took away all the worth he had.

Of course Reginald tried to save Luther’s life at all cost. Further, he sent Luther to the moon with the shitty pretext of ‘giving him something to focus on so he would have a reason to survive’ when he found out Luther being constantly depressed because he couldn’t adjust to his new self. These two might imply that Reginald cared at least a little about Luther or Luther still had some value left for him. But as the show doesn’t give clear answer to ANYTHING, what would I know. ٩◔̯◔۶
