Sonic- 1 y/o, unaltered male, 38lbs
Poor Sonic is having a rough time, but at least he is improving everyday with his confidence. We're not sure where he originally came from, but Sonic was brought to BARCS through our partnering Animal Control after being found running in the street. A catch pole was needed to safely and successfully capture him, as he was very frightened and charging Officers.
While sedated for an intake exam, our vets noted that Sonic had self-inflicted oral wounds (from the catch pole) and deep abrasions around his right armpit area from an embedded harness. A topical antibiotic was applied to the wounds and he was also started on oral antibiotics as well as pain medication. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.
In our care so far, Sonic is very nervous and fearful, but staff and volunteers alike are seeing much improvement from him already. He's not super eager to be leashed, but once outside, Sonic loosens up and thoroughly enjoys taking the time to sniff anything and everything he can. While walking, he is typically disengaged from his handler, but if you sit down and/or get on his level, he is more inclined to check you out and even accept pets and attention. When approached by a stranger head-on with hand extended, Sonic 'muzzle-punched' to created space.
In our shelter's play yard, Sonic was initially fearful and avoidant of other dogs, but eventually loosened up for some brief moments of chase play. At times he will attempt to mount and can be pushy, but does take correction.
Sonic has also shown possible separation-related behavior (triggered by departure); when handlers move away from him, he will whine, howl, pant, and jump/mouth at them.
Due to his current behavior, Sonic is not available for adoption through BARCS and can only be placed with an approved partnering rescue.
Sonic is available immediately for rescue pick-up.
