Vegas Is Overwhelmed in the Shelter and Needs a Lifeline!!! - Baltimore MD
Vegas: unaltered female, 3yo, 81.4lbs
Vegas came to BARCS on 7/14 through Animal Control after being found living outside in unsafe conditions. Despite everything she has been through, this sweet girl remains friendly and eager to engage with people. She enjoys exploring the world around her, using her nose to take in all the sights and smells, and during her outings she happily sniffs around the yard and even enjoys playing with a tennis ball.
Vegas is a big, strong girl with lots of personality and energy. Since arriving at the shelter, her stress level has increased, and staff have noticed her behavior declining as she struggles with the shelter environment. She can be loud and unsettled in her kennel and has difficulty relaxing in the busy shelter setting. Outside of her kennel, she enjoys attention from people and can be very affectionate, though she may become overly focused on certain handlers.
Vegas has an enthusiastic and high-energy play style. During her dog assessment, she became overstimulated and had difficulty reading other dogs’ cues. She was observed mounting, tackling, and playing too roughly, which made it difficult for her to appropriately interact with other dogs. She would need a very tolerant, socially savvy canine companion who can handle her energy, or she may do best as the only dog while she works on manners and confidence. Mounting behavior has also been observed with handlers in the shelter setting and appears to be stress-related.
Vegas is currently underweight and will need follow-up care. She has a lump on one of her mammary glands on the right side that appears cyst-like but will need veterinary evaluation. She also has an enlarged vulva with some bloody discharge, which may be related to being in heat. Additional findings include mild irritation on her right ear from fly bites, some tartar buildup on her teeth with early dental disease, and a need for nutritional support to help her gain weight.
Vegas is looking for a rescue partner who can provide the patience, structure, medical care, and decompression time she needs. She is a friendly, affectionate dog who has been overwhelmed by the shelter environment and deserves the chance to feel safe, receive proper care, and thrive in a home setting.
