* FT / APHRODITE:

𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑹𝑻 𝑶𝑭 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑵𝑬𝑾 𝒀𝑬𝑨𝑹 was always stressful for aphrodite. filled with makeup brands contacting her, offering her paid promotions to include their brand in her ’2018 favourites’ video, planning for the year ahead, everything. and sure, she usually enjoyed the beginning of the new year, the faint undertone of hope for what was to come that was apparent in everyone’s step to the young children who were excited for the new school year, but this year ? she already just wanted to go home and sleep the year away.

the sound of her heels c l i c k i n g against the tiled floor of the cafe, almost as though they were signalling the arrival of a goddess ( which they kinda were ), filled the atmosphere and just as she moved to sit down, happy to finally be able to take the weight off of her feet when her dreams of resting for more than three seconds were crushed. sighing loudly, irritation now coursing through the twenty six year old’s veins freely as she turned her head to look at the other. “ let me sit for two seconds, would you ? my feet are killing me, ” rolling her eyes behind a curtain of brunette locks, aphrodite would take a moment to calm herself before she’s resting her chin in her hand and taking in the other through calm eyes. “ so who is sitting here ? i didn’t see anyone around. ”

— “APHRODITE,” HAEUN SAID, RECOGNISING THE VOICE immediately. “you sound like you’re having a good day ?” sure, haeun might have snapped prematurely, but the response was simply rude. haeun and aphrodite had worked together several times, haeun had hired her for photoshoots repeatedly and they always had an okay relationship. as okay as possible considering haeun never felt the need to keep a connection other than the casual ones.

still, this was one she needed to keep. aphrodite had a certain eye for beauty, something haeun had to force rather than have it come naturally. besides, finding a make-up artist that wasn’t completely unbearable was tough in this day and age. “oh, you know how it is, don’t you ? you work hard and don’t want to be interrupted when you go through something important. i’m merely trying to be efficient.”

— IT WASN’T A VERY PLEASANT TIME TO be had so far. the food was adequate but the decorations drab and the guests even worse. it was a perfect time to network ( not that haeun had needed that for years, but it was also a good way to dig out some more information about probably elysium members ). which is why she’d noticed annalise. she’d watched the young girl waltz around the room, perfectly comfortable in the glitz and glamour, dripping in confidence haeun would never be able to understand. she could fake it, sure, but there was faking it, and then there was being born into it. annalise had an advantage haeun would never get. she also had an obvious issue with haeun for something she could not be bothered to remember. it left her more amused than anything. amused enough to want to interact more with the younger girl, just to see her squirm. “miss yang,” she said, business smile painted to perfection. “i had no idea you’d be here. what a pleasant surprise !”

— “NO, I WON’T WAIT ANOTHER TWO WEEKS FOR the deal to be made, and you were well aware of that before u picked up the phone to try and bullshit me with this made up story. fix the papers, mr wu, and get back to me when you do !” she ended the call and turned to her acquaintance with an apologetic glance. “i’m sorry, i had to take that. i can’t believe how hard it is to get a hold of a photographer that knows the difference between natural lighting and edited beyond recognition. the last photoshoot i was supposed to feature in my christmas posts had the model look like she was some crow hybrid. so much for a festive feeling.”

after a sip of coffee she’d managed to let the annoyance at the situation go enough that she could focus on the fact that nari and her had managed to schedule a coffee date for the first time in what felt like forever. both of them were busy enough to have trouble finding a day where both their schedules matched up. “anyways, how are you doing ? keeping busy as usual ?”

* FT / AMARI:

she flaunts fancy dresses and fake smiles as if she deserves to be there , as if her hands aren’t smeared with blood that isn’t hers ( and as if she doesn’t secretly enjoy that ) . haeun’s blog is but another part of a personality amari doesn’t have and she clings onto it ferociously , like a tiger drowning , claws and all. she convinces herself the other woman’s light will force her own . ❛ oh , i didn’t realize . i can move . ❜ like a snake with her words . calculated and careful . she has no intention of moving and haeun is acquainted with amari’s persistence .

she wonders if it really is so bad of her to seek out friendship and companionship — some sort of normalcy to a life spinning out of her own control . rejection is what she deserves , and still she refuses it adamantly . she should know to look for shiny toys and entertainment elsewhere .

— “AMARI !” IT WAS SAID WITH A SLIGHTLY forced tone and a smile just shy of annoyed, but haeun knew that they would be here for a while. one, because amari was stubborn in her quest to seek out her friendship, and, two, because even though haeun wanted nothing more than to leave right then and there she had a reputation to uphold. cautious but not cold, driven but not greedy. it wouldn’t do to snap at someone in public.

she motioned for amari to stay seated. “it’s fine. i didn’t realise ... you’re fine !” ( it wasn’t fine, but no matter what, it would have to do ). “how was your new years ? i’m sure you were at some spectacular party only the most exclusive guests were invited to.”

vincent mirrored her actions and leaned in close as well, listening to her words with a mischievous smile as he clearly hit a nerve. he wondered how far he could take it as her nails dug into his skin. decidedly, he just placed his hand gently over hers. the sharp pressure of her nails into his skin was unexpected, but he didn’t show it, as if it didn’t bother or stop him at all from being the pest he was. “i do. do you enjoy being so close to my face?” he mimicked. “we could get closer if you want.” he said with a raise of his brow, playful eyes flickering from her lips to her pointed gaze. “you obviously haven’t picked up on the fact that i’ve just been posting pictures with everyone else just to make you jealous. go shopping with me,” vincent proposed, continuing to try to get under her skin. “unless you’re… y’know, too busy playing hannah montana.”

— IN AN INSTANT, HAEUN LET HER GRIP of vincent’s arm loosen, and a teasing smile appeared on her face. “well, it is very handsome after all, how could i possibly resist.” it was said with a slight eye roll, letting him know that she wasn’t playing into whatever he was planning. “oh vincent, you say such foolish things. make me jealous ? of what ? some doe eyed girl ready to fall at your feet with the slightest attention from you ? i know that’s not what you really like, so why should i bother ?” his request was an unusual one however, disrupting the routine back and forth they’d developed over time. “shopping ? with you ?” fuck, this must’ve been his endgame after all. getting under her skin. “is that how you get all the girls you usually have on your arm ? do you make them swoon with your promises and pretty smile ?” within a few seconds she was out of her seat, staring at him with a raised eyebrow and a bored glance. “well, show me then. see if you can make me fall for you.”

* FT / ANSO:

hands busy flicking open a beloved lighter—it’s a thing of steel with a snake head etched out on it, rough around the edges like someone took to it with their own tooth & nail—he lights the cigarette resting upon his lips, takes an inhale and blows it out in soft plumes just above their heads. look at him playing nice like that.

and my, my what a feisty one she is – - he’d expected as much from what he’d seen of her in the past few months. little mosaic pieces of the world of sun haeun coming together to form a monet of a woman; all so pristinely perfect from afar, breathtaking enough when looked at afar. but the closer you got, the uglier each brush stroke was. what a woman to be looked upon. ( she had crawled her way under his skin the day she’d taken that opportunity from him, and settled in like an itch he wanted to scratch. ) he’s already taken another drag by the time she’s finished, the venom on her tongue falling so honeyed to his own ears. “oh i am, very much so. have you noticed? i don’t do too well with subtleties.” and it’s a statement of fact because anso really has no purpose or bother in belonging with the shadows. everything he does is with a bang, like he’s begging for life to hit him with a punch that he can’t get up from. ( and he is. ) “you took something of mine, miss sun. and i don’t take like sharing, or losing – particularly, in that order.” when he leans back, it’s as if he’s asserting the importance of that very statement – daring her to admit to it before even he does. it has hounded over him, twisted into something curled along the edges with smoke—the gig that had led him to her—even though in reality it is to probably mean of no importance or relevance to her. though, if reality regaled anso’s senses, he’d be a different man. ( he’d likely be a dead man. )

a hand coming to place itself down on the table, long, roughened fingers curl – dig into the cool glass surface before he continues to speak. “so tell me darling, how are you planning to pay me back? you certainly seem to have all the answers, don’t you?” a plume of smoke, the gleam of something distilled in a dark brown gaze – “so then, riddle me this.”

— IT WAS AN INTERESTING GAME THEY HAD begun to play, the two of them, probably starting before haeun had even realised it. the thought would’ve bothered her if she hadn’t been so uninterested in why this man seemed so intent on taking back what was his. what she had taken from him. that was his first mistake, his personal involvement. once you’re emotionally involved you become blind to things, unable to look at the situation objectively.

“you’re about as subtle as a gun shot, so i think the forward approach fits you better.” she tilted her head, assessing the situation at hand, trying to figure out what it is that he could possibly want from her. “i thought we were supposed to be on the same side, isn’t my victory also your victory ?” the words were said with a slow smile spreading across her face, because of course, haeun was on no one’s side but her own. however, she had a feeling that anso was the same, both of them using the cicadas as a means to an end. “but by all means, please tell me what i took from you. i have to admit, i’m intrigued to see where this is heading.”

it wasn’t a lie, she wanted to see this play out. was interested enough to not shut it down immediately. anso intrigued her. the thought was unsettling. she needed the curiosity sated before it grew.

with a small sigh haeun leaned forward, grabbed the cigarette he’d lit up in front of her, and took a long drag before crumpling it to the bottom of her finished coffee up. “you shouldn’t smoke, it’s bad for you,” she told him, smoke billowing from her own cherry red lips. “tell me, anso. how can we make this situation between us better ?”

* FT / LEONARD:

EMPTY PROMISES WERE THE only kind that existed, and a new year came with all of them. leo had given up trying to look for change at the transition — he had, long ago, ceased to believe that there was such a thing. times did not change. they only repeated themselves.

still, the man had opted for a work lunch today, actually making an effort to interact with his co-workers. they were much too dense for his taste, ignorant and unwilling to budge on their very subjective, very false truths. leo let them believe in whatever narratives they had made about macau though. it was easier that way: hiding in plain sight.

upon their exit, he got up to give up his spot for a family waiting, then headed to the only other empty seat his eyes seemed able to find. it was a familiar face that entered his sight as he sat down. «by me,» leo agreed, restless eyes glancing around the café as if to prove a point, every occupied seat glaring back. leo looked back at the girl. «humor me, haeun.»

— THE VOICE ANSWERING HER WAS A SURPRISE, and it put a small smile on haeun’s face, one of her only ones and only saved for the man sitting in front of her. “leo,” she said, putting her note pad on the table between them. “next time, make your arrival known, will you ? you know i’d pretend to be more civilised if i knew it was you.”

their relationship was a tricky one, built on a mutual respect and a lack of interest in interacting with people. in a sea of distrust and betrayal that was a rare occurance.

still, there always was a reason for the other to reach out to her. despite the fact that leo was one of very few people haeun could stand being around, they rarely did so without work being tied to it. there had to be a reason for his sudden appearance. “do you have anything for me ?” she asked, curiosity getting the best of her. “is that why you’re here ? you need me to do anything boss ?”

— HER FEET WERE ABSOLUTELY killing her. yuri had spent the whole morning at a photoshoot wearing what was likely, the world’s most uncomfortable pair of platform heels. the shoe’s very shape alone wasn’t something found in the real world and her poor feet were screaming for relief by the time she found herself at a coffee shop for a little pick-me-up. yuri placed her order before scanning the shop for an empty seat. the place seemed to be quiet busy for the late lunch hour and the only spot yuri found worth actually taking was across a girl on her laptop. the red-haired girl did her best not to wobble in her heels as she crossed the room to take a seat while she waited for her order to be called.

she knew she should have brought flats to the shoot, but no, her sense of style simply wouldn’t allow it. yuri leaned down to remove her heels and give them a quick moment of relief when the girl beside her spoke up. she paused in her movement to raise her eyes at the other, who didn’t extend her the same courtesy. yuri raised an eyebrow before responding, “there was literally nobody sitting here. i’ll be done shortly.”

— “THAT WASN’T THE ANSWER I WAS LOOKING FOR,” haeun replied, still not looking up, still going over the notes. “i’d prefer if you were to be done quicker.” a small gaze upward and the tapping of her pen against paper stopped. in front of her, she should’ve noticed the insistent sound of her heels against the floor, the loud voice dripping with unrestrained self-worth, not scared to let anyone know it. the princess of asia.

“kwon yuri,” she stated, mouth curving downward in a displeased grimace. even the name left a sour taste in her mouth. “i should’ve known.” known all throughout asia as the model that all the fashion houses fighting over who gets her to walk their runway. one of the first people haeun had ever interviewed. based on the heavy makeup she’d just left a photoshoot. “care for a comment ? what brand have you been posing for today ?”

* FT / ANSO:

there’s something about him that looks just a bit off in the daylight. the sunrays don’t hit him quite right, slink along the curves of his shoulder just a little bit off like he’s stepped out into a world that’s not supposed to see him during the day – under the sun’s watchful gaze. and it’s likely enough, for anso always works better under the cover of night. the work he does doesn’t often take to the hours of the day. call it force of hand, if you will.

he supposes she doesn’t work by the same ground rules.

he hasn’t seen her since four months and three days ago, today. he’d barely gotten a glimpse of her before she’d left that crime scene behind—mundanely blood-less, alas, because anso hadn’t been able to get in and do his job because of her—but he’d known, he’d watched her move off and into the busy of the city with all the semblance of a woman on a mission. ( he supposes she did have one: one to celebrate a foiled gig. ) but that was all beyond them, or so they paraded, because now they both wore the badge of the cicadas and played ignorant at any moments that their paths did cross. anso supposes the ignorance isn’t half as feigned on her end given he’s never once tried to approach her, even if he makes a point to follow her around like a shadow that doesn’t do very well hiding. and well, what can anso do about that? nature always does best to color out her fiercest predators; his crimson hair is something of a testament to a tried & true evolutionary tick.

“yes. by me.” he replies, slinking easy into the chair. there’s reason to think smoking isn’t allowed within the premises, yet he’s got a cigarette hanging from pale lips—unlit, so far. he eases himself into the chair, the brown leather of his jacket dimming the way the sun seems to hit the fiery note of his hair, legs spreading in a sprawl that seems wholly unnecessary for where he’s seated. “they’ll understand. won’t they, sugar?” leaning in to match her stance, he cocks a sharp brow; the way his lips curve speaks of nothing other than trouble. “you and me…we’ve got some business to talk about.”

— THE VOICE MADE HAEUN’S PEN ABRUPTLY STOP its movements, her whole body going on lockdown, before she silently continued what she was doing. anso and haeun had happened upon each other by chance, one of the reasons why the cicadas found her in the end. because she found them first. at first, haeun hadn’t really bothered with following up on the situation, he was another blip on her radar ( along with his general contact info, criminal and medical records, credit card information as well as his web browser history ) and then he wasn’t.

all of a sudden he was everywhere.

she didn’t notice at first, which bothered her when thinking too much about it. because she was in the business of noticing stuff. the small details that made the impossible happen. the fact that she hadn’t noticed 6 ft of man walking around after her was embarrassing. but once she had seen him it had been hard to miss. he was always a few too many feet away for them to be considered to be close in proximity, but not too far away that it would be considered an accident. no, he knew what he was doing. haeun was pretty sure of that.

“song anso,” she said in a casual tone, tint of boredom laced on top. the pet name, however, made her clench her teeth and she wondered silently if draining his bank accounts would be considered a petty thing to do. “i don’t think we do.” for the first time since he’d sat down she lifted her gaze and looked at the man in front of her. “but you seem to be awfully interested in me, sweetheart !”

* FT / VINCENT:

THERE WASN’T ANYTHING IN HIS WORLD that a good cup of coffee couldn’t solve. vincent constantly had a running list of gears and thoughts going on in his head, may it be a current case or the next thing to keep him occupied for the day. unfortunately for haeun, who was sitting by herself as he stirred cream into his coffee, he had found just that. he slid into the seat across from her, not even getting her to look up. “and now it’s taken by me. thanks for saving it,” vincent smirked, looking across the table at haeun as he continued to bother her. amused by her displeased expression, he studied her for a moment, as if perplexed by her very existence. “hacker by night, blogger by day and… interviewee in the afternoon?“ he asked, curious–he was always curious–there wasn’t much he or many people at all knew about haeun, and this was his opportunity to change that. “what trends should i be following for january? i want to up my engagement on instagram and you seem like the perfect person to ask.”

— INFURIATING. THAT WAS THE ONLY WORD fit to describe vincent byun. there were a lot of similarities between them, none of them good and that in turn made it almost unbearable to be around him. “vincent,” haeun said, tone acid. “a pleasure as always to have my time interrupted by you.” his comments made her twist her face in an unpleasant smile, and she leaned forward grabbing his arm ( from the outside it might’ve looked like a sweet scene between two friends, maybe lovers, but ), her nails digging into it. “do you enjoy being this annoying ? why don’t you yell a bit louder about things better left untouched. and the trends are, as always, layers. that and pinstripes. it’s all rather dull. i am much more looking forward to spring where it’s a twist on traditional tailoring. suits and dress pants, preferably in white.” she tilted her head to the side, “i’m sure you’ll have great fun during your shopping trips with whatever arm candy you’ve picked up along the way.

— IT WAS THE START OF A NEW YEAR which meant that haeun’s blog currently was full of yearly favourite’s and best of’s, as almost all of december had been some sort of filler month, with a bit of christmas sprinkled in the middle. she always liked the beginning of a new year, and the new beginnings they entailed. it was filled with promise.

haeun had just finished up a small interview with an up and coming designer ( apparently colour blocking would come back with a bang ) and was now finishing the coffee she had bought for their meeting. she always liked going over her notes before wrapping up. but, before she could do so, someone rudely interrupted her process. her brows furrowed in a deep frown, and before the person had managed to get too comfortable, she leaned forward, eyes still on the notes in front of her.

“excuse me, but that seat is taken.”
