I’m so so glad that so many have been introduced to Choir Boy via the Tonys. Here are some things you need to know:

Choir Boy follows Pharus Jonathan Young, a queer student at an all-male, all-black private prep school. He is a gifted singer who was elected the lead of his school’s prestigious choir. The show focuses on Pharus as he navigates the challenges of being an out queer student, and his relationships (romantic, platonic, and conflictual) with the other students at Charles R. Drew Prep.

Choir Boy ran on Broadway at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre from December 12, 2018 to March 10, 2019, extending their limited run twice to rave reviews following their Off-Broadway run in 2013. 

It is written by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, who also wrote the screenplay for Moonlight as well as the play it’s based on.

Choir Boy is not a musical, it is a play with music. All of the songs are African American spirituals. 

All of the music is sung a cappella.

Choir Boy was nominated for four Tony Awards: Best Play, Best Actor in a Play (Jeremy Pope), Best Sound Design, and Best Choreography. They also won a special Tony Award for their vocal arrangements.

There is no video bootleg, but you can message me privately for an audio. I have audio of both Jeremy Pope and Jonathan Burke, who took over the role of Pharus when Jeremy had to leave the show to do Ain’t Too Proud.

Check your local regional theaters. They may be performing Choir Boy! Speakeasy Stage Company in Boston will be performing Choir Boy in the fall.

the last time i saw spring awakening it was the pre show and everyone was doing their thing and then sean (voice of otto) walked on after having been out for the previous show and miles (otto) yelled “you’re back!!” and ran over to hug him

the moral of this post is that miles barbee is a cinnamon roll and deserves your attention
